I think what made her my favorite companion (other than her snarkiness/sarcasm and lack of wanting to "be with" the Doctor, simply be with him as a real friend and desire to travel) it's the fact that she was one of the MOST ordinary and (in her eyes) useless person. She did things in a very simplistic and human way, something that I think many characters lose as they travel with the Doctor (or never had)- and certainly one of the Doctor's biggest weaknesses. Donna thinks and acts like a human, even if she is in the past where her abilities would be seen as too advanced: considering a woman of non-royal status who can read, write, think for herself, and is older than many of the companions. She grounds the Doctor in a way that some companions don't really seem to do without judging or hating him in the end. She is also shown to be a vital person for the Doctor after he begins to spiral and continues to be a reminder to him of what he CAN do. For me the line: "Not everyone, just someone" is exactly what the Doctor tries to do from then on (before he sort of had the attitude of all or nothing and would destroy himself for not "succeeding").

In Turn Left; there was one small positive to the Doctor dying in the Runaway Bride. The Master was never awakened within Professor Yana and he was stuck at the end of the Universe as The Tardis would never get there for the Master to steal. And at least the Last Of Humanity didn't have to scream in the darkened burning furnaces of Utopia as they were cannibalising themselves. And Professor Lazarus wouldn't be able to build his Young Machine without the Master/Saxon's funding. I suppose there's lots of things to consider from Series 3 within Turn Left's Timeline. - The Family of Blood would've died, Nurse Redfern would've been safe along with that entire village. No death or destruction. Though Timothy would never get the heightened warrior boost from the Fobwatch. - The Ship from 42 Would've fallen into the sun. - The Angels would never be able to get at the Tardis leaving them stuck in that manor unless they got interested in Sally and just sent her back in time... - Though I do wonder how The Daleks plan would've gone in 1940s Manhattan without The Doctor intervening. I suppose Dalek Sec would've got killed regardless due to his plan of making the Human Daleks more Human but this time the Gamma Strike wouldn't have a Time Lord to get in the way making them 100% Dalek. - Finally, The Face Of Boe would die without being able to tell his secret... Though if the Tardis could never reach Utopia; Jack/FOB wouldn't have memory of it, therefore, no secret.
@joelmole31574 жыл бұрын
There's also the rest of series 4 to consider: - The Pyrovile would have conquered the Earth with ease - The Ood would still be enslaved - The war on Messaline would have continued - Agatha Christie would have likely died at Eddison Hall at the hands of the Vespiform - Unless River found another Doctor, she and the archaeologist would have been eaten by the Vashta Nerada Also for Series 3: - The Carrionites would have taken over the Earth - It's likely that the Daleks failed anyway since the reality bomb plan continued without a hitch. - Also, would the Face of Boe have sacrificed himself to save the people of New New York? He didn't for 30 years after all. - Humanity would have cannibalised themselves anyway, either as the Futurekind of as Toclafane but either way, they would be stuck at the End of the Universe and Yana would have died

@@danieljensen2626 Yes, all lost episodes are available as audio-with-commentary. Most of the ones from the Hartnell era work really well as quite often the visuals are a relatively minor part of the stories - and in some cases one's imagination fills in the gaps better than the low-budget visuals. By Troughton's era, though, the visuals play a more important role, so the stories feel a lot less like radio plays with optional visuals. They are still enjoyable, though.

Ace, she was a diamond. I call her that because I call a spade a spade. She was like our Queen of hearts only, two places higher. If there was a club, she'd be top of the pile. That joker she hung around with, he wasn't quite the full deck. She soon dealt with him though. Even after they eventually shuffled off together, she was still numero uno. So if I had to pick one, any one, it would be Ace. I'd let the audience see, and I'd remember. Then, when asked to confirm what I had up my sleeve, it would be her. That's the magic of Doctor Who

You said Donna wasn't the smartest of the companions, but she had the most common sense. And DEFINITELY the biggest balls.

Okay, can I just say that I like the Doctor was quite shocked at Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart for what he did, but he was doing what he thought was the right thing since the Silurians started it and would've continued doing it. Also, he wasn't exactly a companion (more like quite a recurring hero) though you weren't wrong about him being the longest serving one; he'd been on the show quite a bit on and off for more than 20 years and met most of the Doctor's incarnations 1-12 (for those that don't know, the Brigadier had on-screen stories with the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th Doctors, somewhat briefly met the 1st Doctor twice, met the 6th, 8th and 10th Doctors in off-screen stories and briefly encountered the 12th; 10 doctors). The award for longest-serving companion actually goes to Jamie; the 2nd Doctor was on-screen between 1966 and 1969 (3 years and 4 seasons) and Jamie appeared in all but one of the 2nd Doctor's stories. Meanwhile, his questioning Salamander (impersonating the Doctor) concerning the controls was through how he told Jamie and most probably the rest of his companions to never touch them. Although he like Brigadier Lethbridge-stewart wasn't a companion, I thought that what Sargent Benton did in not trusting that phone call he received from the Master pretending to be the Brigadier from The Time Monster was good.

I find it difficult to believe that the doctor would have just allowed himself to drown to death without Donna's intervention.

The star whale one is actually what made me love Amy so much, I love that episode and I cry every time I watch it
@DivineDefect3 жыл бұрын
I hardly ever cry, I didn't even tear up at Tennant's "I don't want to go" which makes me feel so upset with myself, but Amy's realisation comparing the Star Whale and the Doctor's similarities made me shed a few tears, something I haven't experienced since I was a kid!

I’ve a gripe with #5 and #1 - the fact that they did the good thing doesn’t mean it was calculated at all. As was pointed out, Bill didn’t know that she was going to survive the broadcast, she didn’t know her Mother’s memory was going to help, Donna had NO clue the Doctor would die OR the consequences that would bring. Meanwhile, the Brig killing the Silurians WAS because he knew the consequences if he didn’t. Amy knew that there would be no consequences if they DID free the Star Whale.

You really should start to include Big Finish in your videos. Night of the Doctor showed us that Big Finish is canon to the TV show, after all
@ftumschk4 жыл бұрын
Nice video, but the Brigadier wasn't really a Companion with a big "C". The Companions (or "Assistants" as they used to be called) are almost always young, and usually specifically cast as a full-time character who acts as an audience-identification figure. In the Classic Era, these were the likes of Vicki, Jamie, Sarah-Jane, Ace (etc), and in the Modern Era we have Rose, Martha, Donna and so forth. The Brigadier, along with Captain Yates and Sergeant Benton, belongs in the same category as Captain Jack, River Song, Kate Stewart, Jenny, Strax and Vastra - they're recurring "guest heroes", not Companions as such.
@julieeverett74424 жыл бұрын
yes he was, 3rd doctor was unique as his first three years were Earth bound, he and the UNIT crew were the doctors companions as much as Jo and Sarah were , he was intergral to many of the third doctor stories, and he IS acknowledged as a companion

I really felt sorry for Mickey at some points. I mean we know it already, but the Doctor can be a real jerk sometimes and Mickey copped a lot of that from him. It was good to see the writers turn him around.

I'm just happy that you included Jamie. I don't care, Jamie is the one companion I want see again. He was a friend on par with the Brig and he's just been relegated to history. Not only did you include him, but an actual classic companion!
