Donna Noble owned the head of UNIT in "The Sontaran Strategem". "You lot, with your stormtroopers and your sonics, rubbish!" She figured out there was something wrong with the employees at ATMOS, when she noticed an empty folder for "Sick Days". "No hangovers, no man-flu, no sneaking little shopping trips, no one ever gets sick here!" Donna Noble, Supertemp!

I think what made her my favorite companion (other than her snarkiness/sarcasm and lack of wanting to "be with" the Doctor, simply be with him as a real friend and desire to travel) it's the fact that she was one of the MOST ordinary and (in her eyes) useless person. She did things in a very simplistic and human way, something that I think many characters lose as they travel with the Doctor (or never had)- and certainly one of the Doctor's biggest weaknesses. Donna thinks and acts like a human, even if she is in the past where her abilities would be seen as too advanced: considering a woman of non-royal status who can read, write, think for herself, and is older than many of the companions. She grounds the Doctor in a way that some companions don't really seem to do without judging or hating him in the end. She is also shown to be a vital person for the Doctor after he begins to spiral and continues to be a reminder to him of what he CAN do. For me the line: "Not everyone, just someone" is exactly what the Doctor tries to do from then on (before he sort of had the attitude of all or nothing and would destroy himself for not "succeeding").

If you ask me the smartest decision by a companion is when Martha decided to leave the Doctor. Allowing her to be the only new companion to be alright after leaving the Doc.

Well, "Martha is alright" is very arguable. It depends on how much you care for the Doctor's conclusion of "turning her into a soldier", and how much that's a bad thing. The last time we see her, she's still on a battlefield with random af Mickey. I really don't think she got the best deal.

Martha Jones. She walked the Earth alone for one year to save everyone. During that time, she had to make many solo decisions (read "The Story of Martha") on her own. While it was a mission instigated by The Doctor, she unselfishly put herself in danger. Then, in the end, decided to leave him to heal her family. Genius.

This is partly why I miss the Davies era - it is that he was so good at creating REAL people, with well thought out emotion and relationships that affected the story - like with Donna, she was someone who didn't feel special, didn't feel like she belongs anywhere, but she fought although it was terrifying to her to do what she needed to do - I miss companions like that, she was terrified, but so brave, and you felt it.

In Turn Left; there was one small positive to the Doctor dying in the Runaway Bride. The Master was never awakened within Professor Yana and he was stuck at the end of the Universe as The Tardis would never get there for the Master to steal. And at least the Last Of Humanity didn't have to scream in the darkened burning furnaces of Utopia as they were cannibalising themselves. And Professor Lazarus wouldn't be able to build his Young Machine without the Master/Saxon's funding. I suppose there's lots of things to consider from Series 3 within Turn Left's Timeline. - The Family of Blood would've died, Nurse Redfern would've been safe along with that entire village. No death or destruction. Though Timothy would never get the heightened warrior boost from the Fobwatch. - The Ship from 42 Would've fallen into the sun. - The Angels would never be able to get at the Tardis leaving them stuck in that manor unless they got interested in Sally and just sent her back in time... - Though I do wonder how The Daleks plan would've gone in 1940s Manhattan without The Doctor intervening. I suppose Dalek Sec would've got killed regardless due to his plan of making the Human Daleks more Human but this time the Gamma Strike wouldn't have a Time Lord to get in the way making them 100% Dalek. - Finally, The Face Of Boe would die without being able to tell his secret... Though if the Tardis could never reach Utopia; Jack/FOB wouldn't have memory of it, therefore, no secret.
@joelmole3157
@joelmole3157 4 жыл бұрын
There's also the rest of series 4 to consider: - The Pyrovile would have conquered the Earth with ease - The Ood would still be enslaved - The war on Messaline would have continued - Agatha Christie would have likely died at Eddison Hall at the hands of the Vespiform - Unless River found another Doctor, she and the archaeologist would have been eaten by the Vashta Nerada Also for Series 3: - The Carrionites would have taken over the Earth - It's likely that the Daleks failed anyway since the reality bomb plan continued without a hitch. - Also, would the Face of Boe have sacrificed himself to save the people of New New York? He didn't for 30 years after all. - Humanity would have cannibalised themselves anyway, either as the Futurekind of as Toclafane but either way, they would be stuck at the End of the Universe and Yana would have died

IIRC none of them are missing entirely, there's audio for all of them (at least partial audio), it's the video that is "missing". And I think I've heard people are creating animated versions, which is cool because they are kinda hard to watch as audio with random stills from the set.

@@danieljensen2626 Yes, all lost episodes are available as audio-with-commentary. Most of the ones from the Hartnell era work really well as quite often the visuals are a relatively minor part of the stories - and in some cases one's imagination fills in the gaps better than the low-budget visuals. By Troughton's era, though, the visuals play a more important role, so the stories feel a lot less like radio plays with optional visuals. They are still enjoyable, though.

'The Boneless' is actually really underrated as a sci-fi concept. I've often hypothesised that the universe is full of life based on any element on the Periodic Table, i.e. not just carbon, and on elements humans have yet to discover. Agreed. Some of these "genius" decisions are on a par with turning the water off when the bath is overflowing, or handing a tissue to someone who is crying. Good, but not really remarkable. By contrast, one time when I was driving to an airport, my car engine was overheating for unknown reasons. My wife made the brilliant decision to turn on the car's heating (even though it was a hot day). This cooled the engine enough for us to arrive safely.

There are others from Clara you missed and 1 from Amy . -Amy remembering the Doctor bought him back into existence in The Big Bang - Clara saving The Doctor multiple times after jumping into his time stream in The Name of The Doctor - Clara pleading with the Time Lords to help The Doctor (which they did by giving him a new regeneration cycle) in The Time of The Doctor . BTW I know the Clara ones are kinda spoiled now by Chris Chibnall's Timeless Child so don't worry about pointing that out . Imagine how the s7 end events would have turned out with no Clara . I would have loved to have seen an episode about that .

It’s really cool to even think about what would happen if the Doctor never met any of his companions. She thinks of both the Moon of Poosh and the bees leaving. The “ superior” thinkers in the room couldn’t think in simplistic ways.

@@FamGuy1000000, I don't agree with your justice for Martha thing. She wasn't really treated badly by the doctor and she left because she wanted to, because she's strong and she doesn't need the doctor to live an incredible life. She preferred to get out of the situation she was in ( being in love with the doctor) that she judged unhealthy. Martha doesn't need pity, she made a strong and independent decision.

What about the time where Clara Oswald sacrifices her existence by entering the Doctor's timestream to undo the harm caused by the Great Intelligence. which results in the creation of numerous incarnations of Clara throughout the Doctor's history who appear to every known face of the Doctor, saving his life in numerous ways.

Is it a decision or a realization that it is what had always been done. She knew that the doctor met her multiple times in his past all of who died. And knew that the timestream split her. Was there ever an initial Clara to make the initial decision?

Series 1 finale really ties into the series as a whole. When Rose looked into the Time Vortex and became Bad Wolf, she superceded time itself. She broke the time lock on the Time War and connected with "The Moment" from Day of the Doctor. She asked for the Moment to show the War Doctor his future, the one where he goes on to do amazing things as well as connect to specific points in the Doctor's future to save London from the Zygons as well, using their own technology to save the Time Lords. Even if the Time Lords were massive jerks later on, Rose loved the Doctor enough to save them. She also warned the Doctor in Turn Left to return to Earth to stop the Dalek's Reality Bomb.

Rory, in Roman gear, vs. a shitload of Cybermen. One question, and a brilliant quip about 'blank looks'. Three words to say about that: Balls. Of. Steel. Donna, again, in 'The Fires Of Pompeii': she's the Doctor's conscience, begging him to save Caecilius and his family, despite the Doctor's objections. The Doctor had started to get a bit above himself by this stage.

Ace, she was a diamond. I call her that because I call a spade a spade. She was like our Queen of hearts only, two places higher. If there was a club, she'd be top of the pile. That joker she hung around with, he wasn't quite the full deck. She soon dealt with him though. Even after they eventually shuffled off together, she was still numero uno. So if I had to pick one, any one, it would be Ace. I'd let the audience see, and I'd remember. Then, when asked to confirm what I had up my sleeve, it would be her. That's the magic of Doctor Who

Okay, can I just say that I like the Doctor was quite shocked at Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart for what he did, but he was doing what he thought was the right thing since the Silurians started it and would've continued doing it. Also, he wasn't exactly a companion (more like quite a recurring hero) though you weren't wrong about him being the longest serving one; he'd been on the show quite a bit on and off for more than 20 years and met most of the Doctor's incarnations 1-12 (for those that don't know, the Brigadier had on-screen stories with the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th Doctors, somewhat briefly met the 1st Doctor twice, met the 6th, 8th and 10th Doctors in off-screen stories and briefly encountered the 12th; 10 doctors). The award for longest-serving companion actually goes to Jamie; the 2nd Doctor was on-screen between 1966 and 1969 (3 years and 4 seasons) and Jamie appeared in all but one of the 2nd Doctor's stories. Meanwhile, his questioning Salamander (impersonating the Doctor) concerning the controls was through how he told Jamie and most probably the rest of his companions to never touch them. Although he like Brigadier Lethbridge-stewart wasn't a companion, I thought that what Sargent Benton did in not trusting that phone call he received from the Master pretending to be the Brigadier from The Time Monster was good.

I’ve a gripe with #5 and #1 - the fact that they did the good thing doesn’t mean it was calculated at all. As was pointed out, Bill didn’t know that she was going to survive the broadcast, she didn’t know her Mother’s memory was going to help, Donna had NO clue the Doctor would die OR the consequences that would bring. Meanwhile, the Brig killing the Silurians WAS because he knew the consequences if he didn’t. Amy knew that there would be no consequences if they DID free the Star Whale.

Nice video, but the Brigadier wasn't really a Companion with a big "C". The Companions (or "Assistants" as they used to be called) are almost always young, and usually specifically cast as a full-time character who acts as an audience-identification figure. In the Classic Era, these were the likes of Vicki, Jamie, Sarah-Jane, Ace (etc), and in the Modern Era we have Rose, Martha, Donna and so forth. The Brigadier, along with Captain Yates and Sergeant Benton, belongs in the same category as Captain Jack, River Song, Kate Stewart, Jenny, Strax and Vastra - they're recurring "guest heroes", not Companions as such.
