In this creepy account of spineless giant animals, we will tour the planet and discover record holding monster invertebrates, including the kings and queens of major categories of molluscs, crustaceans, spiders, and centipedes - including 3-foot hermit crabs, dinner plate-sized spiders, and a crayfish bigger than a small dog. When the largest animals without backbones are considered, it is clear that when encountering those of unimagined sizes it is best to simply stay out of the way…

I looked it up. And that spongebob reference went right over my head. Also I did a quick google on the Gippsland earth worm: These giant earthworms average 1 metre (3.3 ft) long and 2 centimetres (0.79 in) in diameter and can reach 3 metres (9.8 ft) in length; however, their body is able to expand and contract making them appear much larger. On average they weigh about 200 grams (0.44 lb)

English is not my native tongue. After converting the first couple of measurements to metric and getting a headache I replaced all following measurements with ''really big''. This made me sad. It might be handy to have metric on screen when using lots of imperial measurements. This would avoid having to say the same thing twice, while making the video more international audience friendly.

We have those centipedes here in Trinidad. If they get in your house and you have tiles (or if you have a tiled driveway outside) the sound of their feet hitting the ground is terrifying. A lot of us have our washing machines outside (in the garage) and they like to hang out near them. Chalk birds (we kind of have different names for animals here, I'm guessing this is a species of egret) eat them sometimes, but they struggle to. Thanks for an amazing vid.

As part of a movie production I once temporarily housed one of those giant scorpions in a small aquarium. I fed it crickets, but it eventually is stopped eating. So, I got a bunch of meal worms and threw a few into its lair. The thing freaked out. It came charging out of its corner, immediately stuffed one into its colossal three-part maw, grabbed one in each claw, then backed into its corner and stuffed itself. It literally grew to twice its size. I occasionally would put my hand in there to clean the place out and give it water, but it never attacked me.

When I was in Cambodia I saw a few Huntsman spiders. They are huge, but they are very shy. I once saw one in the corner of the lavatory hut where I was and when I nudged the door open he ran like the clappers.

AHHH! @6:13... in the caribbean in my youth I ran into a millipede similar to this. It curled up and released some kind of poison that stung for a long time. Of course I was a kid and I did disturb it, not out of malice, but curiosity, so I understand why it did it, but when I see that now... wow I can remember that!

Hey Simon, when I was a kid Southern California my brothers and I encountered centipedes longer than a foot rather commonly. Not as thick as the Amazonian, and we usually found them under rocks. I think the species is tiger centipede. Anyway love your videos man.

Fun fact: a quick rule of thumb with scorpions is you can make a quick determination about the danger of a scorpion's venom based on the size of the class. Big claws, weak poison. Small claws, potent poison.

I live in Naples Florida and I found a giant Huntsman spider in my garage one night. It moved so fast and actually jumped at me in an attack. It was larger than my hand, fuzzy and grey. I was so scared I tossed my huge trash can at it to get it away from me and out of the garage. I’m not aware where they are indigenous to but it’s now in South Florida.
