Absolutely useful fills. As you said, it is important to have a bag of breaks and fills in order to survive in any musical situation: jams, song writing process, improvising...

It's a Gretsch. 14 x 5 (I think). Evans power centre reverse dot head on the top and a hazy Evans 300 snare side on the bottom. Both cranked pretty high. I think it was an anniversary model or something. It was a gift.

I love the drums in this song. I love the style as well. I have been using it to get that double hit on the bass fluid along with the 8th notes being consistent. I have been improvising the fills to be honest, along the theme. After a few months I am glad to say I am now quite proficient at the double and even double double bass hits, but it is fantastic to find your video showing me the fills. And that 3 bass drum part is very interesting! I'll admit I never picked that up. I play it by ear, but to see the technique broken down is brilliant. Thanks.

Thanks Joe. Probably the most valuable information out there. These are classic fills that sound great, and will actually be used by a working drummer on a regular basis. They are exactly what’s called for in their musical context.

Great fill ideas ! The ultimate 'soul' fill, for me, is still the Earl Young thing he played on all the classic Delfonics / Stylistics records. I call it the "Pak Paka Dum" fill ahah ! The simplest thing really, but if you really lay it down with that laid back feel, its just "that" sound.

Hi Joe Thanks for your great instructional videos. I'm a beginner drummer, and I really enjoy learning your drum fills. But I need some clarity on Fill No.2. I tried to watch it in slow motion, but I still can't see where your sticks are going. Please could you give me that drum sequence?
@joecrabtreedrums10 жыл бұрын
It's just single strokes - R L R L R L R On some of them I have an extra right at the end. Just move your hands around the drums until you find things that you like the sound of. One example is Sn Sn F T Sn T F (where Sn - snare, F = floor tom, T - rack tom)

Hey.. just found your video.. AND happen to have the trivia pat and debbie boone answer! : ) lol.. pat boone was a singer in the 50s'-60s and is the father of debbie boone! who had atleast one hit record that i myself liked in the mid 70's.. called.. " you lite up my life ". ......... there you go..

Hey, i wasnt finished watching the full video before when i commented. now after seeing the full video. i wanted to come back and say nice fills! and i also wanted to comment on your comment about how you struggle at times to come up with new fills, so your not playing the same ones.. and i teach music too. ( drums too ) and i want to suggest that you go back to " your feeling"! this may sound ridiculously simplistic and basic! BUT! i do find so many people forget it! so that needed to be said. music is a feeling! when your " riding the wave" just " feel " it. feel the groove! and you will be surprised at one comes out of your musical consciousness! dont think abou it. FEEL IT and FOLLOW THE GROOVE... if there is no groove? and your not feeling it? then dont expect to be able to play to it.... ~

Great Video - thank you - To answer your first question, the drummer on WOULD I LIE TO YOU and the whole album DUOPHONIC by Charles&Eddie is Gene Lake. I found the album not long after the song was a hit in the bargain section of my favourute record-store and was very surprised to find some of the big names of the 90ies-NYC-Jazz-Fusion-Scene amomg the personell. The album itself is quite lame and boring, i guess that was the reason for the ONE-HIT-WONDER. Same with the follow-up CHOCOLATE MILK in 1995.
