I'm deeep down the speaker and cabinet wormhole, for decades...It's like finding the right set of pickups for a particular guitar, or the right neck. They really do make a difference. You find a cabinet and speaker combo that works for a particular head, and it's a "Eureka!" moment! One such moment I had was a Fender DBFRI through a 2x12 closed cab loaded with 1976 Celestion blackback 55hZ 30 watters....It just worked. And those speakers can be offensive. But, everyone's hearing is different, so it's all about finding "Your Sound". I'm a fan of 25 watt greenbacks, but know there are excellent, affordable options. It takes time, so much time...Johan certainly offers excellent guidance and clues, as to what we might like. A treasure trove of information, much appreciated, Johan!

I feel honored how much confidence you put in my last comment that make you buying the Mod-35 now. It's not just greenback like it's also half the price + very light + low efficiency... I also have Celestion modern greenbacks in a CAA 412 that has been my main cab for at least 15 years. The Greenbacks sounds better than the MOD-35 but considering all the pros listed above, they definitely worth the try. Can't wait for the second part! 😍😍 Oh and I'm a big datasheet enthusiast too, but I often felt a difference between the frequency charts and what I can hear in front of the speakers. Sometimes huge ones. Like the one you seems to feel when comparing the G12T75 curve... Thank you 🙏🙏

Hi Johan! I'm really excited about this upcoming project! Thanks for your scientific approach and all the useful information. That's what I love about your channel! Wonder which one of the current speakers is going to come closest to the Pulsonic ones. Can't wait to see the overlayed frequency respomses! My expectations are probably highest from the Scumback, EVH and Warehouse, but one never knows. It's very cool that you're actually going to buy the speakers! I know it's already demanding enough and some would argue that Celestion is already getting too much attention, but I'm kinda surprised there's no Creamback among the chosen ones, as it may be the most frequently used current speaker from the Celestion Greenback family (at least in Thomann charts) and should be in the ballpark, too... Had to revisit the video to digest all the information and have look at the doping influence before posting. Cheers!

Im really excited this is happening! Modern Jensens are hidden gems. Most underrated speakers in production. Nighthawk and P12Q are best of bunch (i've tried). However I think you should measure Pulsonics, blackbacks etc on IEC baffle with measurement mic. 1x1m plywood and cheap superlux ecm microphone are more than enough to unveil true response of pulsonics.. Documenting reponses of all those iconic speakers would be immense contribution to community. Maybe a project to consider in the future? P.S. I think you should contact Ignazio from Jensen, I'm pretty sure they would be happy to send you some samples for demo. Cheers! Frane

I make a lot of measurements on HiFi speakers, and I can for sure say that you can not use frequency response measurement from different manufactures for anything on guitar speakers, you can compare Celestion to Celestion, Jensen to Jensen ... but that is it. To be able to compare response curves, the following things have to be standardized, which they are not, and the manufactures don´t supply information about how they do them: - The cabinet has to exactly the same size, with the same opening placed the at the same spot, or closed back - The placement in a room can make a big difference on the response - The recording equipment has to be exactly the same type, and the mic setup has to be the same - The amp should probably also be the same, because of damping factor etc. - The speaker has to have the same impedance, because response differs from for instance 4 to 8 to 16 (see that on Jensen´s datasheets). The windings on the output transformer likewise. - The curves need to have the same response smoothing. A real response curve looks much different (much badder). The Thiele / Small parameters (short T/S) have a lot to do how a speaker perform in different cabinets. So a speaker that sounds good in an open cab, does not necessarily sound good in a closed cab. That has something to do with magnet strength, Q-values and Vas (how firm/soft the surrounds are basically). So that is a tough thing to compare, unless you measure them all by yourself. But it was a good try 🙂

Great video. Plenty of good ideas and info. And I'm very much looking forward to subsequent videos on this topic; the "proof is in the playing" sequel(s) to this video as well as the hinted-at testing of other clones of classic speakers of the illustrious "classic rock" era. I know the tone I'm after and I have eventually managed to get a good idea of what components to use to get it, but there are so many variables and so much misinformation (when there is any information at all) on specs and response that sorting out the calculus of tone can be incredibly difficult and frustrating if you're looking for a specific sound. Good, even excellent tone is readily achievable with just a relative few datum points to guide you, but _specific tones_ are much more illusive. Add budgetary concerns over not being able to swing the premium for obtaining antique, sought-after amps and speakers adds to the difficulty. This is why I subscribed to this channel however many years ago.

I’m a huge fan of the mod speakers. I have a pair of mod-50’s in a 4x12 sized 2x12 and they’re fantastic. They pair really nicely with higher wattage amps that need pushed a bit to sound right, they’re a bit quieter than a Celestion. And cheaper. A lot cheaper, and cheap is always good, right…? They’re dramatically lighter than a Celestion too. Going from four G12T-75’s to these two mod-50’s in the same cab made a HUGE difference in weight. I have cabs half the physical size of that one that weigh more I love Celestions and I’ll always have a few around, but as long as Jensen keeps making the mod series, I don’t see myself buying Celestions in the future. I think I’m a Jensen guy now, never thought I’d see the day…

Interesting stuff! Thanks for the great content! The thing that does bug me a bit, is that there is no error margin mentioned in those factory measurements. As in we don't know how much 2 same model speakers could be apart from each other. In high quality microphones, the tolerance is usually around +-1dB per frequency, which is really little. I would guess that in guitar speakers it is a lot more than that. More to the grounds of +-2-5dB which would already be really significant. But we would need to measure multiple speakers to determine that...

I recently replaced a pair of Eminence GB-128 with Celestion G12-M Blackbacks from 1976. The blackbacks have a more pleasant and tamed mid-high range and plenty of bottom end (to the point that I raise the treble quite high with them). I still think the Eminence are great, a lot of high end spark, definitely like them more than the modern Greenback reissues.

Big difference in the G12 H new and old. Not that one is better than the other depends on what you are looking for. Have a Greenback in a Nace pro 18 and I love it. Have a Celestion Creme 90 watt in a 112 Orange cab that I really like for my Kemper Powerhead also have a Redback still in the box. Used to use Vintage 30s for years but after getting the Creme found out I really don't like Vintage 30s. Want to try the Redback in the Orange cab but the Creme sounds so good with the Kemper haven't got around to it yet. The Orange cab had a Vintage 30 in it when I got it, it only lasted a couple of months with the Kemper pushing 300 watts through it. 75s seems very close to the g12m up to about 2k Hz and then there is a drop where the Greenback has upper bite. I guess with a good Eq pedal should be much closer after some adjustments. Interesting

I wish Johan had a semi hollow body with paf’s to do a Marshall tone comparison. Do you think the hollow body has more of a throaty kind of tone. I always thought that George try Thorogood got that punchy tone from that semi hollow . I’m thinking of buying a 345. The new Marcus King reissue 345 looks and sounds amazing.

@@JohanSegeborn Great! I have a tremendous amount of experience with the speakers, if you're looking for the old 25 watt g12m, get the legacy ceramic, 30w 40oz. Weber tends to under-spec their magnets, when they say 30 oz it's actually 25, and when they say 40 oz it's actually about 32oz. I have taken these measurements myself.

I pick it from the Celestion web site in the video celestion.com/product/g12m-greenback/ The h30 55Hz is discontinued and the frequency response chart is removed from the Celestion web page. Are you suggesting Celestion posted the wrong chart on the G12M page?

Johann that's correct they are posting in error. The g12m greenback has a slight hump in the 2 to 4 k range like the anniversary not a drop off The h30 55 hz heritage is the only one with the this small dip Love your vids Johann "Let's go" lol

Pink noise. Most people are now saying "white noise" when thy mean pink noise. White noise is equal energy at all frequencies, which sounds trebly, like tape hiss. Pink noise is equal volume in every octave, which sounds like that "ocean roar" sound.
@JohanSegeborn
@JohanSegeborn Жыл бұрын
Are you referring to the measuring of the frequency response curve? It’s actually just a sine wave at each frequency. From the Jensen web page “The y-axis on the left is the label for the "dB SPL" curve. This graph is a measurement of the sound pressure level measured by putting a microphone 1 meter away from the speaker and running a sine wave frequency sweep from 20Hz to 20kHz across the speaker (these are the values on the x-axis - the axis is a logarithmic scale)” Let me know if I suggested anything else. I’d be glad to correct it
