@Old Guy While buying fresh food is a great way to ensure that you're getting high-quality ingredients, it's not always practical or convenient. There are many frozen foods that can be just as healthy and delicious as fresh food, especially when it comes to fruits and vegetables that are frozen immediately after being picked. 😊

My sister makes a strawberry kiwi freezer jam that is high on fruit and low on sugar. She uses it as a topping for cheesecakes as well. One cup of kiwi to three cups of strawberries. I do the same thing but with one cup of blueberries to three cups of strawberries. (Ratios are because the flovour in strawberries is less dense per volume in comparison to those in kiwis and blueberries.) So much great fruit flavour with very little added sugar, as it is 4 cups of berries to 1 cup of sugar. Freeze it until you open it, then refrigerate after that.
@BabbleTop
@BabbleTop Жыл бұрын
@John D. That sounds delicious! Freezer jams are a great way to preserve the flavor and nutrients of fresh fruit while minimizing the use of added sugar. Strawberry and kiwi make for a great combination of flavors, and the low sugar content of the jam makes it a healthier alternative to traditional jam or fruit preserves. 😉

Ground beef is cheap? Is this video from the 50s?
@BabbleTop

@Guillaume Côté Ground beef is generally considered to be an affordable protein source when compared to other types of meat. The price of ground beef can vary depending on factors such as the quality of the meat 😁

I don’t know where you live but in northwest Indiana the price of ground beef has hardly reduced at all. There have been times lately the prices was so high I was reduced to buying mystery meat frozen burger patties at Dollar tree. I eat so little burgers frozen or otherwise it’s sad. When I get on a tight budget I buy frozen fake crab meat ( surimi ) and eat it hot or cold in various dishes.
@BabbleTop
@BabbleTop Жыл бұрын
@emagneticfield I apologize for any confusion. It's possible that the price of ground beef may not have reduced in certain areas or at certain times due to various factors, such as supply chain disruptions, changes in demand, or regional differences in pricing. 🤔

@Michael R. It's common for people to have personal preferences when it comes to food, and it's perfectly okay to have different opinions and tastes from your spouse or others. There is nothing inherently wrong with freezing meat, as long as it is done properly and safely. 😊

@Catherine Prime Yes, frozen foods can be a good option when it comes to being frugal and budget-conscious, especially during times of food inflation. @Michael Terrell That's a great point. In situations where potable water is not available or limited, frozen pasta can be a convenient and practical option. It can be stored in a freezer for a longer period of time and can be easily prepared with minimal cooking equipment and water. 😊

@@BabbleTop Another plus was that you could let the races of sauce dry, then burn the waxed paper boxes and leave nothing but a few ashes behind, instead of carrying out empty tin cans. At one time, the only way to get a warm meal at work was to put it on top of a ladder and turn on the studio lights at a TV station. My mess hall was miles away, I was the only person in the building, except during our 6PM or noon newscast. I couldn't leave the building, while we were on air, so I got creative. This was in Alaska. A can of soda would freeze solid in just minutes if left outdoors. Our barracks had screens over the windows, so you would open the window and stick a can between the glass and the screen for two minutes to chill it. You could keep frozen food out there as long as it wasn't visible from the ground level.

Wanted to compliment you on your well thought out replies (rather than the generic "Gee thanks" you get from some channels). I don't think people who buy frozen meals think they're getting the best nutrition option, they are already aware of the compromises (with the exceptions noted in your video, e.g., frozen vegetables), they purchase frozen for other reasons. And of course a chef would say, "Just make your own," but they generally have most of the ingredients, tools and skills required already at hand.

Buying fresh means REALLY learning portion control, keep times and staying on schedule for everybody's meals. That's a lot of effort and time you maybe don't got. SO -- You can wrap portion sizes of meat and freeze them. Thaw in the fridge while you're at work and you've got fresh to season the way you like them. And you CAN SO freeze bread. After the first rising, punch it down, oil it, wrap super tight and put in the freezer. In the morning, loosen the wrap and let it thaw in the fridge all day. That's the second rising. Shape it how you want, let it rise while you're having wine or prepping or gossiping. Stick it in the oven to bake and impress the heck out of everybody. Works especially well with plain French dough. And if you freeze wrapped apple pie filling in pie-pans and keep them bagged in the freezer you can have pie anytime you want. NOT recommended for pecan pie. Trust me. Yes, I'm a cook.

@Lethe Consuming too much salt can increase blood pressure, which can in turn increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association recommends limiting daily sodium intake to 2,300 milligrams or less, with an ideal limit of no more than 1,500 milligrams per day for most adults. 👌🏻
@lethe5683
@lethe5683 Жыл бұрын
@@BabbleTop Sodium does not cause high blood pressure in most people (at least not until unreasonable amounts are consumed ~10 grams /day). High blood pressure and heart disease are caused primarily by carbs, especially sugar. As well, saturated fat is not a cause of heart disease, in fact most plant oils are more unhealthy than animal fats. Denatured seeds oils cause inflammation and contribute to heart disease and cancer. The american heart association is well know as a corrupt institution. They don't want to cure heart disease, they want to sell "treatments" that don't address the problem (statins).

Absolutely disagree re frozen veg. It could be that people are cooking them far too long. They are particularly cooked before they are frozen. They are fine if you can't afford fresh. Canned is where you get serious mushinss due to the prolonged high heat required for safe canning

So frozen items come with preservatives I never knew that
@BabbleTop
@BabbleTop Жыл бұрын
@Kyle Johnson Yes, some frozen foods may contain added preservatives to help maintain their texture, flavor, and shelf life. Common preservatives used in frozen foods include sodium benzoate, sodium erythorbate, sodium nitrite, and citric acid. These ingredients are generally recognized as safe by the FDA, but some people may be sensitive to them or prefer to avoid them for personal reasons. 🤔

@SPIDER That's true! Soggy waffles can be unappetizing and affect the texture and flavor of the food. With Eggo waffles specifically, the instructions on the packaging recommend toasting them in a toaster or oven, which helps to create a crisp exterior and fluffy interior. 👌🏻
