As players get beyond 7 foot tall the weight range they can be while still maintaining the necessary mobility in todays NBA without being to slight of frame to be pushed around. If Shaq had managed his weight better with a proper diet he could’ve potentially been the GOAT. Clearly he was still dominating with all that excess weight on the Lakers, yes. But he just kept pushing the envelope and it ruined his joints and by extension the longevity of what his career could’ve been. He could’ve dominated alongside Wade and won 2 or 3 more Championships in Miami if he took better care of himself. For those who don’t know… look at how he played and could move in Orlando when he was a rookie and playing at an ideal weight… his coordination, balance and speed for a man of his size was truly on another level. If he trained the way Giannis trains and optimized lean muscle mass over just accumulating mass in general (muscle & fat)… man… people just have no idea…. He could’ve been the gold standard of athletic potential over LeBron James in my opinion.

This is Shaq's biggest talent: despite his weight, he can move so fast while suffering below-average amount of injury for a NBA big man. When Yao, who is very very talented in his own way, puts on enough weight to become almost an equal match-up against Shaq, he quickly suffers injuries that cut his career much shorter. I don’t think that owners, “one player should basically cherry pick,” idea is so crazy. I mean if you keep one player back then the other team is basically going to have to keep a player back a lot as well. Now while 4 - 4 should actually help the offensive team because of the floor space, so it would hurt you defensively, if you had the right player cherry picking. I mean it could work. Maybe in certain game situations. Like when you are down big or down late. Have you seen the way LaMelo and his high school team played? LaMelo would cherry pick a lot. And he’d end up completely open a lot for an easy basket or he’d end up one on one and be able to completely isolate. I understand it’s high school ball but I honestly think there is room for it at the pro level. Purists will fucking hate it but strategy is strategy...
@younglove33622 жыл бұрын
Nobody will hate it. It's not really affective 👎. To counter it, you either score on being outnumbered or leave a defender to guard the cherry 🍒 picker 📸 .
@AClaiderman2 жыл бұрын
It’s a feast or famine play style tho. There’s no “real” strategy on defense because people are only thinking about the offensive side. I don’t necessarily agree that the other team HAS to keep someone back there too. There are 24 seconds on a shot clock, they’re gonna use most of that time to get a good shot, and with 5 players vs 4, they’re gonna score a vast majority of the time. And when they don’t, there’s rebounding. It’s hard enough rebounding in the nba. 5 guys are gonna be able to get multiple offensive rebounds over 4 guys, leaving that one player literally standing back there doing nothing for possibly 2-3 consecutive possessions. Basically it’ll be hard to create a winning “strategy” like this. Too many factors that are out of your control.
@AClaiderman2 жыл бұрын
And those are just the things that I came up with to defend that playstyle. Im sure defensive and offensive nba coaches can come up with more creative ways to exploit it. There’s a reason why cherry picking stops at the HS level. Offenses and defense get more and more complicated the higher up you go, not to mention the talent level. You can get away with guarding 5 vs 4 in HS because there’s at least one or 2 guys on the floor you can leave open. In the NBA, they’ll rain 3s on you all day if you leave them open.
@Hotobu2 жыл бұрын
You're wrong, it's a terrible strategy, and it would never work. It's easy to defeat. Here's how Being one player down on defense can work in a transition/scramble situation, but all a team has to do is slow down the pace, spread the floor, and work the ball to the open man. It's hard enough to play defense 5 on 5. If a team has a one man advantage on defense they'll have wide open dunks and layups. They'll easily shoot over 70%. From there all the team on offense has to do is have a "last man back" policy on any shot that goes up. Furthest player from the ball defends the outlet pass, and if the team playing one man down gets the rebound, you just pressure him in the backcourt so he can't throw the long pass.
