Hi Ken, you just touched in my life dilemma. My job role is to do research about companies ownership and investments and although the job title- Data Specialist is fancy title and seems to be a well paid job but not in my case and many of my peers. I don't have any degree and I've thought in taking accounting training but I don't have background in math. I want to take the opportunity to thank you for all your videos. I've been searching for a youtuber that I can relate and I found @thehumblepenny.😊❤

@@zinha7855 Thanks for stopping by! Here is a little secret for you - You DON'T need to be good at Maths to be an Accountant. Yup! What you need are softer skills (commitment to passing your exams initially to understand the technical bits) and then more softer skills for leadership (e.g. communications, negotiating, people skills) etc. This is what is most important. So please don't let the lack of a Math background stop you. Maths helps generally, but accounting is not about Maths at all.

If you are looking for a basic job look at working at a call centre or an IT service Desk. It will give you a salary and its not demanding so whilist the salary can be anywhere between 18k to 22k on average for call centres or service desk its a start. Look at first direct bank call centre jobs or HSBC For IT service desk just type it on indeed, reed or any job site and there should be plenty. Sell yourself as a problem solver as meticulous someone whose careful and does things properly for service desk you will commonly get calls about password resets or internet not working or windows account creation. If you google these then show your knowledge in potential interviews it will all go well. Remember dont compare your step 1 to someone's step 100 . Ken is where he is now because he saved invested worked hard that doesnt mean it was easy from day 1 he would have struggled. Dont lose hope and if you believe in God pray to him to make things easy. You can also look at Aldi supermarkets grad scheme as well.

@@janhvi8679 HR means Human Resources. It's a department that oversees employee recruitment, reimbursement, training and general welfare in a corporate organisation. @aaliah sidat There are courses like Personnel Management but most people I know in that career (like most people in Sales) didn't study this in university. A number of people pivot into this career space on the job and then get additional qualifications as they gain experience. You'll probably still need a degree to get started though. I'll suggest you search online for more information about this.

I'm currently a community pharmacist. Even with 10 years experience in pharmacy It's virtually impossible to reach the 6 figure mark. Maths was my favourite topic in school, I achieved an A in A levels. I went down the pharmacy path for "security" and relatively "decent" salary. Now I'm almost 2 years qualified and I'm really thinking about future prospects. Btw very inspirational. Gave me plenty to think about
@TheHumblePenny
@TheHumblePenny 4 жыл бұрын
Cece ohh, WOW! I love that you kept that very real. "security" is the main reason why many people go for Pharmacy. In fact, I recall a Ghanaian friend I used to have at College who went down that path. Smashed his A-Levels, etc, but did Pharmacy. It was the wrong move for him and he was seeking a way out after qualifying. For you though, I think you must *seriously* explore how you can use your transferable skills (if you want to change careers). This is why doing an MBA is so appealing. It can give you that launchpad. Many of the of the people on my Executive MBA course were doing it exactly for that reason. They wanted a way out of their current careers FAST! Final thing to tell you is that hesitation has a cost. Very important thing to bear in mind.

Listening to your clear, successful, rich, career journey from a young age only makes me feel further inferior and depressed. I just need a minimum wage salary at the moment never mind 6 figure. How is it that people know exactly what thye need to do and how to get there. I'm 24, ethnic minority, female, I have a C in maths GCSE but don't hold any other passed GCSEs (despite all the resits) , a mature business student , long term health issues, disabled non-working parents, don't hold any professional qualifications never mind a degree , I don't drive, I have no social life, I am clueless in knowing how and where to apply though I'm registered to most job sites in the UK, get no support, and understandly depressed. At the moment I genuinely don't know which job I want and how to get started. I know what I don't want ie a job a a crew member at a fast food chain or a low paid carer or something else I hate. I've been volunteering in charities from late teens but it doesn't fulfil me. Quite frankly I want money and need it. I live in the real world. I can't do any digital stuff so the whole blogging ad related job don't apply to me even though I am in my 20s and my peers are pros in tech. I have many questions but based on what I have explained. I have very useless vocational qualifications such as BTEC in business l2 and functional skills in english. Sadly I will never be a true professional working in an admirable field like medicine, engineering, banking, accounting, because it's already too late and I've missed out. I don't want to be a benefit reliant, outcast, unemployed, impoverished, hideous, failure anymore ! Baed on what Ive shared today, can you help me indetify a career pathway plan and get started and start living. Thank you in advance.

Challenging. The thing to note about my journey is that it has all taken more than a decade. I'm 36 and you're 24. You have a 12 year advantage. I personally think there are 2 things you need to work on: 1) Mindset 2) Skillset For #1 you need a change of environment and people in your life. Aim to put yourself in environments where you'll meet people doing what you want to do. #2 - Skillset - This requires work over time. No shortcuts here. But you'll be motivated to do the work if you have the right people around you. What town or City are you from? Do you have extended family members who inspire you?

If you're willing to put in the HARD work you can easily earn 17,000-20,000+ whilst learning an in-demand skills. Furthermore, the Army Forces can contribute a large percentage to your educational needs. (If you meet the necessary requirements.)

I agree that mindset is really important! I need to work on my own after feeling totally destroyed. I thought I knew what I wanted to do when I was 20 which was to become a doctor. I'm 30 now, technically a doctor but not making the income of one (many complications), and in massive student loan debt. I put it out there to illustrate that I was someone who "knew" what they wanted to do until I didn't. I'm in a lost place myself and I feel the same frustrations. Life is full of curveballs. I’m currently in my final year of BEng in mechanical engineering and wondering if should go on to doing a masters and then eventually PhD but idk if its worth it anymore. Because I have a huge interest and passion for the topic that I want to do my masters + PhD in but PhD is basically 14.5k a year and that’s IF the research council will fully fund my maintenance cost. Whereas, people with my same experience (BEng grads) will be getting about 28k at entry level for three years or more as they gain more years of experience (engineering has about a minimum of an average of 11% pay increase after three years) and that’s just the base margin since you could be getting more than 28k at entry level and my PhD would be 3 years and while I’d be getting 14.5k a year for 3 yrs, I could be losing out on 28k+ a year for 3 yrs :/ and it’s actually frustrating me so much because idk if I should favour my personal interest / passion over money bc I want to become financially free as soon as possible/ buy a house for my parents asap at least 😫 . ANYWAYS I also wanted to also thank you for your videos bc finally its from the UK and I can actually relate + good content

@@TheHumblePenny well from a general practice point of view a hard working GP who does a mixture of different clinics would usually have a cap at 200k-210k. And this is purely because running a clinic is simply swapping time for money and you can only work safely for finite amount of hours a week. So trying to find ways around this cap, entrepreneurship as you have mentioned in your video is a solution but it is a very uncertain path.

Although during all the time building up to it, you want to get as much experience and a range of skills possible. This will greatly benefit to your adventures finding a job. (I hope this helps. P.S. You also wouldnt necessarily exclusively prosecute - though if you worked for the CPS you would. I would focus first on the type of lawyer you would like to become - solicitor or barrister - and then the area of law but stay open minded. You may find you like something else once studying or doing your vocational course. Work experience can help you decide

@TheHumblePenny
@TheHumblePenny 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Riccardo Thank you! 😀 CIMA is a great qualification to do. However, it marks you out as a Management Accountant most of the time and potentially an analyst doing an FP&A role. If you have ambitions of going into Senior Management one day, I'd highly recommend a course such as an MBA or Executive MBA. The latter preferrably. It is a good way to show that you have acquired some of the softer skills and mindset for senior management. Although it's cliche, it certainly gives you an advantage over many who just have CIMA qualifications or even those with ACAs. The key with an MBA being worth your while is *where* you do it. That will determine the perceived value rather than what you actually learn. This is why, for example, I chose Cambridge (Judge Business School). I could equally have chose London Business School. Both highly regarded. But Cambridge offered me the heritage etc and I wanted to network with non-bankers. Hope that helps 😀

@TheHumblePenny
@TheHumblePenny 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew This is the same challenge that I faced trying to leave Audit into Industry. It was a catch 22 because I didn't have Management Accounts (MA) experience but I wanted a Management Accounting role. Plus I wanted it in industry and paying me £40k+ So here is what I did - I needed to *show* that 1) I had MA experience (no matter how small) and 2) I understood MA e.g. Month End process etc and I knew how to put together a set of Management Accounts. 3) My personality was one suited to hard deadlines and that I was a likeable guy etc. I banked on Personality. #1 and 2 I needed to get an interview. #3 I needed at Interview. #1 I got by talking about my review of Management Accounts during my audits etc. I also talked about doing management accounts for my family business. #2 I got from asking people on LinkedIn (people who were in the position I'm in today) to talk to me practically about MA. I'd offered to meet and buy them lunch etc. #3 I got from psyching myself up and in my mind imagining myself in that job. I practised this role play so much that I was pretty much there in my mind. And so when I spoke about Management Accounting at Interview, I spoke with enthusiasm and authority. Plus I *thoroughly* researched the companies I interviewed and so my enthusiasm gave me an advantage 😀. The above in summary is how I made that first leap. You need to model it and apply it to your situation.

Currently a mechanical design engineer but unfortunately the progression and money is actually OK but nowhere near to finance and I would have to go into contracting / consultancy to make the top money. If I wanted to pivot career to CFA for example what is the best way to start from this position? Really want to progress into CFO style roles and develop the softer skills.
@TheHumblePenny
@TheHumblePenny 4 жыл бұрын
What you need is a qualification that gives you access to pivot. One that shows you have potential to do leadership type roles rather than just technical ones. I'd suggest an Executive MBA. It's expensive and has to be seen as an investment. Preferrably, you want an existing employer paying for some of those costs. For CFO specifically, you'll need an accounting qualification e.g. ACA to have an edge, plus experience. For other leadership type roles, an Executive MBA will help. For Investment Management path into Senior Investment Director, etc, a CFA accelerates that journey. There are investment firms (Venture capital) with a niche in science, etc. You could approach such firms so that your current technical skill works in your favour.

I was at senior manager / associate director level in an accountancy firm for 4 years prior to my career break and I’m not sure how to move to the next level (my accounting qualifications: ACA and CIPFA)... I’d be very keen to hear your thoughts on how someone in my position could pivot from accounting or progress into senior management positions as a chartered accountant. PS I’m black and I’m a woman 😊 oh and I have an MBA....... and yet, I’m still unemployed after job hunting since Oct 2019... surely taking a career break should not completely derail my career?

Thanks , Eve Tats! Glad you love them 😊. Ok you have an interesting situation. First, have I had good fortune? Yes and No. Yes, because I honestly believe I'm a fortunate person in so many ways. Long story but things work out for me... very thankful for this. No - Because I do things VERY differently to a lot of people. You'll see what I mean when you watch the video on Thursday. Now onto you - ACA, CIPFA, MBA. Crikey! A few things immediately come to mind: 1) How old are you? Hopefully I can ask you this on KZbin 😉 2) How would you judge your people skills? 10 being highly personable. 3) What is your overall attitude to risk? 10 being highly risk loving. 4) A general observation - You're limiting your options to just practice. The Humble Penny wow, thanks for the response - I appreciate that you make the time to read and respond to us all 😊 Interesting perspective on “fortune”... Can’t wait to see your video on Thursday... Doing things differently to move forward is what I want to do too... Even though, I’m not where I want to be career-wise at the moment, I’m also fortunate in many ways. 1. 😂 I don’t mind you asking... I’m 40 😊Love being 40 but I’m keen to start realising my career and financial dreams (I suppose 2 year career break didn’t help)... 2. People skills - I’d say 6 or 7 in general... had to hone this skill as my roles since qualifying have been client facing. I am sometimes an 8 when I’m inspired, excited and/or passionate. 3. I’m definitely a risk taker - I’ve learnt to couple this trait with a bit more thought to avoid “silly” losses... 😬 4. Totally agree... I would love to hear your thoughts on career progression in accountancy (outside of practice) and / or pivoting into another career without starting from scratch... If you do some one on one coaching, I’d be keen to find out more...

Make sure you watch today's new video when it goes live between 3 and 4pm. I've been thinking about your comment. You seem like you have the right energy, skills, and attitude for much success. I'd HIGHLY recommend a move out of practice. It's not quite the place to make the type of money that you might want. You want to go to a place where you'll grow to have some influence and take on C-Level quickly. Being a *black woman* as well, you have advantages that you need to use. Don't for a second think of any of that as a disadvantage. You're sitting on opportunity that you need to use if understand how 😀. Anyway, give me a shout if you want via coaching form. Warning though, I'm extremely busy and tend ignore most coaching applications because most of them are from time and energy wasters. Only complete the form if you REALLY want coaching and be prepared to see it as an investment.

So I’m basically looking around for different jobs that will make me happy in the future. I don’t think I would be happy with nursing so if anyone has any suggestions I’m open to it.

Hey Ken, firstly, you're awesome thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with the world. I hold a BSc in Psychology (UK), but I'd really like to move into accounting and business. I'm lost in all the options - what route/s would you recommend? 🙏🏽
@TheHumblePenny
@TheHumblePenny 4 жыл бұрын
Zizi, thanks a lot! :) Psychology is an important degree to have. Especially when it comes to money, investments, business, etc. With Accounting and Business, a credible qualification is the ACA (ICAEW). This is one of the qualifications that I have. As you already have a degree, you can get exemptions to 1 or 2 exams. Basically, you need one of these technical qualifications if you want to start of a good career in accounting or business. Ofcourse, you can use you existing degree and knowledge to start a business that then becomes successful. However, if you want to go down the career path, it helps to have a decent "professional qualification". Here is a link to the qualification that I mentioned: www.icaew.com/learning-and-development/aca You can also do the ACCA, but my preference would be ACA (I'm biased, but I know what I'm talking about too) :)

Hi Ken! Thanks for this video, as someone in accounting I'm currently studying AAT Level 4 (having completed the previous 2 levels). I'm confused as to which professional qualification to go for, ACCA, CIMA, ACA...I currently work in an ACA approved firm, but I'm not sure if it's the right one for me. What do you think of all 3?
@TheHumblePenny
@TheHumblePenny 4 жыл бұрын
Hey James, ACA for sure! It's what I did 😀. But others are great too. The qualification is not the only goal. The real goal is Talent Stacking. Bringing together all yoi are as a person in order to advance yourself.

James Batchelor ACA is focused more on technical accounting skills and audit - more suited to practice. CIMA is focused on a combination of accounting, management and strategic thinking (I did this route) and is designed for people in industry. I chose the industry route as in my experience it is a lot more hands on with the ability to influence the operations on a day to day basis “behind the figures” rather than putting together year end figures or carrying out audits after the events with limited influence on the businesses you are working on. (I started out in practice and hated it). I general terms in my experience industry wages also have a much sharper increase as you progress.

@@TheHumblePenny Hey Ken... this is an amazing video. Love your channel. I'm a Sri Lankan 1st gen immigrant myself. I have experience worked in recruitment sales after graduating from university. After 2 years of that I've turned to self employed personal training which is what I've done for the last 2 years. I would absolutely love to go into something like what your friend was doing. Is there any way, shape or form you could point me in the direction of how I can look to get started? Even if you could introduce me to him so I can ask him a few questions on LinkedIn? Or perhaps a suggestion on how I can retrain to get into what he was doing? I am extremely determined to do well for myself and make my family both here and back in Sri Lanka proud. Any help would be absolutely appreciated man!

Really great video; so well-informed and just honest! Thank you, subscription well earned. Do you think it's important to get to a high salary as early as possible? Much as my personality type prefers to create something myself, take the risks and be in the leadership positions, I can't help but wonder if it is worth the 5-10 years it might take (or longer?) to get your own company, for example, up to a comparable earnings point when if you just took a conventional employment route you could be earning six figures much sooner and benefitting from compounding on your investments! It is a big risk to gamble that your own company will not only be successful but also be earning significantly more such that it outperforms a conservative saving/investment plan in a conventional but boring job! What do you think?

You don't need a degree to be rich per se. It's important to understand this. The real thing that you're getting is that you're upskilling. This is part of what's important for making you richer over time coupled with risk taking and stewardship of money and your other resources over time. Make sense?

@ashadmoomkin9348
@ashadmoomkin9348 3 жыл бұрын
Pharmacy unfortunately doesn't pay in the UK. Higher paying roles are reserved for hospital pharmacy (after a few years) and you have to be lucky to get a position after you graduate. All careers are what you make of them, do it if you truly enjoy it, but from experience for such a tough degree, you are not rewarded here, maybe look at Australia or Canada, pharmacy pays better there. I have since switched as it wasn't worth it for me
