Just to say this is a repost from a few years ago because I've been ill with the flu all week and have been stuck in bed. Hope it cheers your day a little.

Turning the saying "never judge a book by its cover "on its head. Publishing houses are cutting corners to minimize on costs and unnecessary expenditures. Can you imagine renowned illustrators like Alan Lee and John Howe being commissioned to do book covers for the Classics. The bill won't be cheap🙃

We need a new genre in literature, dedicated to insane covers. The 60s creatured a treasure trove of wild covers, and I often find some absolute beauties in second-hand book shops. Yes, sometimes a book can be bought for the cover alone - as demonstrated by Tristan. Excellent episode, thank you.

I laughed so hard I still have tears in my eyes. I was going to mention, though, that, for me, the worst book covers are the ones where the illustrator HAS read the book and puts a spolier clue in the picture. Old Dorothy Sayers mysteries come to mind, and I think a few Agatha Christies, too. Still laughing about Darcy's in town! Hope you're feeling better soon.😊

@tristanandtheclassics65384 ай бұрын
I know, right? Do you think the cover designers were fired afterwards? 😂 To be fair, the Sheba Blake designs are deliberately bad. It's like their brand. But I didn't know when I first discovered them.

Sorry to hear you’ve been under the weather! Thanks for the laughs. I guess the adage “You can’t make this stuff up” is true - lol! I was not surprised that you included a few from Wordsworth. With a few exceptions - 1984 being one of them - I’ve always felt that a lot of their covers resemble film posters for cheaply made B movies. The Iliad cover is no exception! I did like your work on Mill on the Floss :)

Haha! I would totally read any of these as retellings the way you describe them. I actually do design covers for classic books. My style is more vintage, but I feel like I should take inspiration from these.

Listen some of the covers are hilarious, but the one for The Wessex Tales is a direct stealing of a cover from a video game - Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock - I think they honestly just chopped off everything but Slash, slapped some new words on it and said ‘that’ll due’ 😬
@MrPleers4 ай бұрын
Actually the Othello game (also called Reverso) was named after the Shakespeare book. But why they used a picture of the game as a cover is beyond me.
