The problem with pardons is that they forgive the "crime" but don't remove them from one's record. The conviction can still come up in searches and one may still have to account for it. The only remedy to completely remove a conviction in the U.S. is expungement. An expungement seals one's record like the conviction never happened. But those are much harder to get; even the president cannot grant one.

Oscar had contracted an infection when he was in prison after his ear burst following an exercise. He passed out from the pain and woke up in a prison hospital where they pretty much just bandaged the wound and sent him on his way. The infection grew and turned into meningitis which spread to his brain. Sadly that killed him when he was only 46.

One thing of the Flipper case that got me was the conduct unbecoming charge as that charge its usually tacked on as a screw you to the officer for getting court martialed. However, after looking in the case I could see how the jury could legitimately convict on the conduct unbecoming. Flipper was asked to have the unit's money safe in his room by his CO despite the same CO sacking him as the quartermaster. Flipper found the money missing and instead of reporting it he lied about it. When it came out the money was missing the base and local community pulled a George Bailey and donated to replace the missing money which no doubt is a mark on his character and probably helped him on the embezzling charge. However, the fact Flipper lied about the money in the first place probably sank him in the conduct unbecoming as officers (especially West Point alums) are expected and trained not to lie.

I have lived longer enough to see attitudes change about homosexuality, race and what is considered acceptable language. I would love to see a video on how the meanings of words change. When I was in school, it was the GAY 20's not the roaring 20's. Calling a homosexual queer was the greatest of insults now it's what they call themselves. You might include the differences in spelling of words. I read a British author's book and wondered if I had been spelling words incorrectly my whole life. Even the Canadian language gets confusing for American readers.
