This is what it's like as a Black man walking 10 hours in China.
Living outside your home country isn't quite easy, but living in China is a little different. And especially that my skin color is different, I get a lot of reaction from Chinese on a daily basis.
This is Day 6 of my 10 hours of walking in China challenge.

I went to China back in 2008. Being a white woman in China was an exceptional experience, to say the least. Everyone wanted to stop me and either take a picture with me and/or get my autograph. It was wild! Same happened to me in Egypt in 2017- but in an even more fanatical way! Every child wanted to touch my skin, hug me, talk to me, take pictures of, and with me, and would just stare and stare at me with great big smiles on their faces! They just weren't used to seeing anyone different. My boyfriend was getting pretty annoyed with it at the end of our 2 week trip because it was so overwhelming trying to navigate large groups of people/children crowding us and following us wherever we went. It was quite lovely, really. 💞 The children were just so happy and excited to talk to someone different looking in person.

My dad once toured China taking cheap trains and as a 6ft tall deaf man he received a lot of attention whenever he spoke sign language. People would just simply stare because it was so foreign. It's cool to see you bridge the cultural gap and chat with people. That's such a beautiful place, feels very peaceful.

Watching all these videos, I can see that the Chinese people show a deep respect for this guy when they realize he speaks their language fluently. They invariably brighten-up with a smile and move curiously towards him. Many people appear to want to be seen with him in a photograph. He is doing great public relations for Black People and China. I hope someone is paying him for this work. 1.4 billion Chinese does not appear to intimidate him.

I enjoyed watching this video 1. I’ve never been to China but today I experienced taking a stroll at the Great Wall & 2. The education factor of it. My opinion, I sensed racism on a few people ie: the guy that was following you around & I kinda didn’t like that security followed you out but also you were a little too in peoples faces like when you was talking to those kids unaccompanied by an adult, so he had reasonable suspicion. Overall this video was enjoyable. I would like to see London next.

“When you accuse others of discrimination, but use narrow-mindedness to judge others and make assumptions instead of seeking evidence, you are actually doing the same thing that you are accusing others of.The person you mentioned, judging from his work uniform, is most likely someone who works in maintenance and cleaning. Do you really think you are important in a busy tourist spot? Thinking that you are being monitored is simply a delusion of persecution.It's too ridiculous.

Let me make a claim here. Every person, regardless of his/her skin colour, will not be rejected, looked down or treated unequally in a country that has a 5,000 years culture. If that person does suffer disrespect then he/she must have done something harmful to the common good. China is a community-based country where individual selfishness will not be tolerated. Take riding a metro in China. Chinese metro stations differ from New York subways for spotless clean and free of graffiti. Thus anyone, regardless of his/her country of origin, will be a public enemy if he/she knowingly damage a public place to make it look more westernised. Any foreigner able to speak a few word of local language is always welcome in any country and China is no exception. However a foreigner fluent in Mandarin will enjoy enormous respect from the Chinese people.

I would also like to point out that staring in other countries isn't as malevolent as it is in western ideological nations, and at the very least not as problematic as it is in "progressive countries" that pride itself on its "diversity". In other countries, observing someone really is just that. Theres not an extended suspension of someones intent. Also, most countries operate with a very homogeneous demographic so when a foreigner who is from a totally different part of the world comes to visit - it is an exception to the norm and does warrant genuine curiosity. It really is the case that perhaps alot of these folks have never aeen a black man in person before, and it is curiosity. It is not the same as living in America or the U.K. where through forced colonization and resource hoarding - people of multiple races and ethnicities live in those countries. Americans love to claim this "melting pot" analogy because of its "diversity" but ask a person of color if they ever feel safe walking through a white-suburb and i guarentee most will say no. The staring and general questioning comes with a different intention.
@tomodul2619

I think there's a big difference between a black man walking in Chinese town with a black man walking in a white neighborhood. Those Chinese don't feel threatened at all. But a black man walking in a white neighborhood would be seen as someone looking to rob them because it has happened. These Chinese have never been robbed by a black man in their lives. Just like the first white people who went to Africa wasn't seen as a threat and people were just looking at them with curiosity until people started realizing that those whites were their to rob them of their natural resources.
