The plot has to move forward man it is what it is. If the series just stayed the same people would just flat out be calling it shit after a while. I don't get everyone's problem, the more serious seasons of RWBY still have comedic elements mixed in and lots of character development + you can see how they react and change from dark circumstances. I think the sad theme added on later on is great.

And don't get me started on the "Oooh No..." For the Grim Dragon. Seriously, her response implies they knew it was there the entire time, and considering she can flip shit with her magic, she has no reason why she could not impale it with the broken mountain and just kill it.
