Great vid man. This my first full year doing track and I became a All American in 400 and now am a junior in hs and been wondering how to get noticed and this was good help

Try to see if you can sign up for New Balance or Nike Nationals. There are always a lot of D1 coaches that drop by NC A&T to see who’s out there. Otherwise if you have already become an All American for your age group (as a sophomore) I wouldn’t sweat it too much. Just continue to monitor your national & state ranking for the junior class. Try to improve a couple spots this year and then as a senior aim to be top 15 nationally in the 400. Top 5 in your state. Stay healthy. Keep drinking water, getting your sleep and be in the weight room 3 times per week preseason and 2 times per week in season. You should be in a good spot currently. Just don’t get too anxious/ overthink it. Let the times come to you and send a few emails to coaches periodically this winter / spring! I hope this helps!

Thank you for watching! I’d say around that age is when my dad and I started getting real serious as well! That’s awesome, and I’m wishing her nothing but the best! Like my coach use to say all the time… the only way to become a fast sprinter is to sprint! 👍🏾🙌🏾👍🏾💪🏾

I know this is an old video, but I just stumbled across it and I found it very helpful! One thing I wonder about is how important is senior year in hs track? With track being a spring sport are coaches already finished with their recruiting classes or are there still chances for scholarships?
@Grant_Rivers
@Grant_Rivers Жыл бұрын
There are always still chances! But depending on the program and how much money they are offering (or if they are offering money at all), you’ll pretty much hear from 90% of the colleges that are interested in you by January/February of your senior year. At least that’s how I remember it. 👍🏾👍🏾

how fast do you gotta be to walk on to a top d1 program in like the 1600-5k?
@Grant_Rivers
@Grant_Rivers Жыл бұрын
That’s a great question! And it largely depends on the program. Nc State is historically a distance program so we’ve had a lot of heavy hitters… so the walk on standards are sky high in comparison to a D1 school that primarily focuses on sprinting like FSU or multi events like Duke, or the throws like Virginia. My main advice is go onto your favorite schools roster and see if they have a description of high school accomplishments for their athletes. Some programs do and you can get an idea of what those athletes accomplished in college. Some programs even have a pdf document on their websites that outline what their walk on standards are. Let me know how you fair and if you need help please let me know.

Do collage coaches accept a 2.9 gpa im not really good at school but I’m pretty fast and I think I’m only gonna get faster through highschool.
@Grant_Rivers
@Grant_Rivers Жыл бұрын
You are doing just fine! Don't be too hard on yourself. Typically, colleges will not accept a GPA below 2.0 to a four-year program. A 2.9 is just fine!

so being good at multiple races is better than just 1
@Grant_Rivers
@Grant_Rivers Жыл бұрын
In general, yes. Coaches like to have athletes that can score in multiple events at conference championships or NCAAs. So an athlete that can run the 100 & 200 or 100 and 110 hurdles or throw discus and shot or hammer and weight throw or even 5000 and 10,000, will typically get more scholarship money than an athlete that can only do one thing. But this is not true if that athlete that only does one event (for example a high jumper that can jump 7 foot 4 inches) makes it to NCAAs and becomes All American vs. their teammate that can do 1-2 events but doesn't qualify in either of them for regionals or NCAAs. Sometimes quality is better than quantity but typically the best athletes on any D1 team can do multiple things extremely well. That tends to be the trend.

@@Grant_Rivers Question: How important is lifting for track athletes? I never touched a weight after the football team collapse during my freshman year. I've been 7.5% body fat with a 405 stiff leg deadlift 5 reps as an adult. Keep making these inspirational videos.
@Grant_Rivers
@Grant_Rivers 2 жыл бұрын
@@antlove22tasker that’s a great question! I’d say that lifting is essential for all track and field athletes. And I’d argue some of the most important life’s are squat, power clean, lat pull downs, pull ups (either weighted or not), TONS OF CORE WORK and step ups. This isn’t to say other lifts are not important but I’d definitely say every track athlete should be focusing on these core movements. If you are a thrower or Decathlete obviously bench press is very important too. We didn’t do many deadlifts in college but if you love doing them don’t stop. All explosive movements are vital for our sport!

@@Grant_Rivers Do you suggest supersets for more lactic acid production, V02Max, endurance, strength and stamina? Lastly, is a 3x Whatever distance (400) at max pace with 1 minute rests considered an extreme workout; is running near your max capacity in smaller reps better than a lot of reps at lower capacity?

I was listening to a podcast where Allen Iverson talks about playing against Michael Jordan. He said when he stepped on the court he thought he was the best player out there. It was his power of self belief that allowed him to do the things he did. It was such a powerful video. I have to send it to you.
