Yea the US Navy realized that they had become sorely deficient in antisubmarine warfare training and borrowed an advanced submarine to train against. As intended - US crews had a tough time until they were properly trained again. Remember that the US military always trains under conditions where the 'friendly' forces are operating at a disadvantage. The reasoning being that you are more open to improving the way you do things after you got your butts handed to you, than if you had won. Just like the US Navy has returned to the practice of 'fleet problems' where fleets maneuver against a simulated enemy that's under orders to win. The idea here is to stress doctrine, training and equipment in order to discover what needs to be improved. Recently an entire set of doctrine for fighting naval battles was discarded because it was discovered to be unworkable against an enemy who was fighting to win.
@x-man50565 жыл бұрын
There's no question that the US Navy needs much improvement in the ASW area. They got rid of the S-2 Vikings with out a alternate means in place. I wouldn't mind seeing the US get about 10 of the A-26 class also, for littoral waters. Point of trivia for you though; A nuclear reactor doesn't make any noise, it is the pumps, valves mostly but the Virginia class and Seawolf class are quieter than ocean background noise. Just FYI.

About need for refueling: you have to look into the context of where a sub is supposed to fight. Sweden has a lot of coast, and the small baltic sea. The country is hemmed in ocean-wise, and therefore any serious conflict in the local area will be close to Swedish ports. The need to get something that can fight independently in -for example - the Atlantic or Pacific doesnt really apply to us. Fighting in those areas will allways be a question of work within a coalition of countries.

The boatyard that builds the subs is called " Kockums "and placed in Karlskrona.Karlskrona is namned after its founder King Carl XI, and got its charter as a town 1680. The King placed the headforce of the Swedish Navy in Karlskrona to be near the Danes, and because the harbour is icefree most of the year. In the same class as " HMS Gotland ", there is 3 subs. What is best kind of depends on how you're using it. The nuclear subs are better for power projection due to their longer range. The Gotland is better for the defense of littoral waters though due to it's superior stealth, smaller size (good for making better use of the underwater terrain in littoral waters) and the fact that in littoral waters the endurance issues of the sub is largely mitigated. They each have their own uses.

@@SonsOfLorgar A nuclear reactor powering the sterling engine? A active nuclear reaction would probably not be a good idea. However something like the approach used by some of NASAs probes might not be a bad idea. There they rely on the heat generated passivly by the half-life of the materials involved. You'd still have to deal with the radioactivity of the materials potentially leaving a trace in the water that's detectable. Still, it would reduce the need for coolants quite a bit I imagine and possibly allow it to function as a heat source with zero moving parts most of the time.

In the RIMPAC 2004, the Chilean SS Simpson successfully fired a training torpedo against the USS John C. Stennis. Also, diesel engines are always noisy at that size and are only used (while on surface) to recharge battery banks that will power electric motors that are the ones that power the submarine underwater. A submarine is easily detected while in recharging maneuvers and while on surface in general

4:45, "by burning liquid oxygen or diesel", well its gonna be hard to burn that diesel W/O oxygen isnt it ;) the sterling os powered by liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen (not diesel), this gives a few advantages like the only exhausts you get are watervapor :) And the reason why its so quit is because the sterling engine is an external combustion engine with a continous heatsource, so it doesnt mix up fuel/air and ignite it to create pressure (sounds a lot, makes stuff vibrate) it just burns the fuel mixture at a steady pace, so kinda lika burning a candle. Pretty amazing things, they dont take up much space at all and looks cool! Nice video though, keep it up!

Russia launching a top notch sub made me check out videos of diesel subs. I think this was the best one on Gotland class, and there are a few. And probably the best video on modern diesel subs overall. Sweden is the smallest state in the world that has a military industrial complex. This goes back hundreds of years. But most relevant is that Sweden was under armed when the big powers started WW2. And overcompensated after the war, when Sweden was flush with cash from having an undamaged industry. So in 1953 Sweden had the third biggest air force in the world (ops!). Anyway, today, due to ideology, Sweden is defenseless. Sweden purges nationalists from its armed forces and its supreme commander is a regular performer in the Pride parade. You can have all the fancy gear in the world but if you populate your armed forces with corrupt cronies and degenerates, its useless. Just look at KSA, who spends third most in the world on military, is getting beat by barefoot militias in Yemen. That is what the armed forces of Sweden have become.

I was on TDY in San Diego when I saw the Gotland Sub at the Point Loma sub base. I t was very small compared to the Los Angeles subs that were stationed next to it. because of its range I understand they had load it on a ship in Sweden and ship it to San Diego to test it. I heard about how it was so silent that it could creep up on any US warship without being detected and start taking pictures. The US navy was so embarrassed the following year when that when they rented some Italian AIP Submarines to try them against the East Coast Fleet they limited them to only SAR Missions. I believe the German and Italian Navy also own AIP Sterling Submarines and are very expert in their usage in various Naval operation. It would be great If we could acquire some of these subs and forward deploy them against China, Russia and North Korea. JC

It features diesel propulsion and an additional air-independent propulsion (AIP) system using Siemens proton exchange membrane (PEM) compressed hydrogen fuel cells. The submarines can operate at high speed on diesel power or switch to the AIP system for silent slow cruising, staying submerged for up to three weeks without surfacing and with little exhaust heat. The system is also said to be vibration-free, extremely quiet and virtually undetectable. " Price per unit: 5 Gotland subs.

A single heavy torpedo from the gotland class would at least break the keel of any surface ship launched to date. Many would snap in half from keel to railing. Ships of any size just isn't built to cope with a 200yard diameter vacuum bubble opening up in the blink of an eye and instantly collapsing under their keel...

"The Gotland-class submarines of the Swedish Navy are modern diesel-electric submarines, which were designed and built by the Kockums shipyard in Sweden. They are the first submarines in the world to feature a Stirling engine air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, which extends their underwater endurance from a few days to weeks". (a Sterling engine is very quiet as there is no combustion, but also very inefficient) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotland-class_submarine Sweden's last war was the 1808-09 war with Russia when Russia invaded Sweden and took half its territory, the part which is now Finland. The Nordic countries tried to stay out of the WW2, but Finland was attacked by the Russians and Denmark and Norway occupied by Germany. After the Soviet fell the Swedish army was let down but is now recovering.
@Highendaudio15 жыл бұрын
Just so that you know. AIP means Air Independent Power, not Propulsion The Stirling engine does not propel the submarine. It is a means of restricted means of partially charging its batteries. The oxygen is no magic. It is an aid to help run the engine. it is not a fuel cell His claims of being able to last two weeks dived are ambitious yes if the maintain 5 knots or less. The statement of they can achieve 20 knots should be followed by a statement that says yes for approximately 20 minutes.

ït might be a diesel electric submarine¨ as if that is any indication of how good it is....... My dad used to sail on a diesel electric from the Netherlands and they ALSO managed to sink a US aircraft carrier in wargames, TWICE in ONE day. Diesel Electrics are anything but outdated. The thing to understand about subs is, its all about what u wanna do with them. Sure, nuclear propulsion is great if you want a ballistic missile submarine to stay underwater for months at a time. But, if you want a submarine that is capable of gathering vital intelligence and attacking enemy combatants at (or below) sea. Diesel electrics are the way to go. They are a lot smaller, which means they can go places the nuclear guys cant. But the main advantage is they are much, much quieter. A nuclear powerplant requires constant cooling. that means pumps, and pumps are noisy. Diesel electrics use batteries and because they have just one screw, they need only one electric motor, which means only ONE moving part. These guys, even the older diesel electrics, are basically impossible to detect when they are running silent.
@MrFlatage4 жыл бұрын
Well let's not hope the next class of Perisher for the RNN won't be by ... SAAB? The difference between diesel electric and nuclear is a trade off. Diesel electric like he said were traditionally loud and surface engines. Traditional diesel engines were actually used for surface travel and charging the battery banks of the sub. The subs then use only battery power when submerged and when a sub is running on pure battery power, it’s extremely quiet- in fact as quiet as a sub can be (in the fuel->propulsion tech area) The new diesel engines now allow the sub to run its engines underwater, but it still switches to battery during quiet operations. Nuclear submarines on the other hand give you a large trade off. They will never be completely quiet because the power plant always require pumps to be running coolant to the reactor and the turbines will constantly be running in the generator. Shutting down a nuclear reactor is not really an option. For one, even with the control rods in it will still take a long time to cool down and it will require fresh coolant to be pumped during that time. Then once you’ve stop the fission reaction, you’ll have built up fission byproducts in the reactor that will slow fission process until they’re burned off, requiring a slow controlled startup. During all this time you will have no electricity generation. It’s benefit is indefinite range, indefinite submerged time, high powered propulsion, and fewer electrical limitations for equipment. This is obviously a very large bonus especially for countries like the United States which strategically is surrounded by the two largest oceans and its projection of sea power is a staple of its defense. That is why all US subs are nuclear and countries whom are more defensive and coastal often use diesel submarines. That and nuclear submarines are technologically more difficult to produce and require a nuclear infrastructure.
@Anlushac115 жыл бұрын
USN has always acknowledged that DE subs are extra lethal because they are so quiet. Typical nuclear subs have pumps and steam turbines that still make noise despite extreme efforts to dampen and reduce that noise signature. DE subs are super quiet, have fewer moving parts so are very hard to detect. The Achilles heel is they have always had to surface to run diesel engines to recharge the batteries when they get low. Some submarines can use a snorkel to allow submarine to remain submerged just under surface and run a tube up to pull air in so the sub can run diesels to recharge batteries while submerged. The snorkel does give away the subs position but is harder to detect. AIP allows the submarine to remain submerged and run a engine and generator to recharge batteries while submerged and not use a snorkel. The drawback is that any engine that consumes fuel has to expend exhaust usually in the form of gases so the sub is limited in speed and depth while running the AIP while submerged. The gases leave the submarine and form bubbles which make noise that can give away the submarines location so great care has to be used when operating the AIP engine The Soviets and Chinese use Diesel electric subs so USN has asked Sweden in past to participate in wargames so USN can learn how to detect these submarines. As for the 45 knot torpedo with 40Km range the two are usually not linked. The torpedo can do up to 45 knots for a short distance or do 40Km at a much lower speed. The torpedo is limited by its available power source. Go fast for a short distance or go very far at much lower speed.
@EvilDaveCanada5 жыл бұрын
You do know what the exhaust that is created by the AIP engine is don't you? Let me give you a hint. They burn Liquid Hydrogen & Liquid Oxygen and use the cold ocean water as the heat sink for their Sterling Engines. Until the sub uses up all the Liquid Hydrogen & Oxygen, they don't have to surface. One of the main reasons that they are so quiet is that the they burn Hydrogen & Oxygen (which creates water & heat) to generate the temperature differential which makes the Sterling Engine run. The Sterling Engine then turns a generator which charges the batteries which then run an electric motor to turn the propeller. The diesel electric engines are for when the liquid gases are used up or the sub is running on the surface and they can exhaust straight to the air. Sterling Engines were used to create extreme cold to create the liquid Hydrogen & Oxygen for the Apollo Program. The basic design of a Sterling Engine is that the temperature differential makes the engine run but if you turn the shaft of a Sterling Engine it then creates the temperature differential. Coleman once made a cooler that was kept cold by a Sterling Engine that was turned by a small electric motor powered either by 120vac or 12vdc. Also remember that the main thing that holds back a nuclear sub from staying out at sea for a real long time is not running out of fuel for the engine but the lack of space to hold enough fuel (food) for the crew. NASA has used Sterling Engines to generate power for a space probe using the heat from a decaying radioactive isotope to create the temperature differential that the Sterling Engine needs to run. It then generates the power the probe needs as Outer space makes for a great heat sink.
