After contemplating the challenge, I took a trip to the Dollar Tree and started thinking. After weighing different items and different possibilities, I came up with my list of items. I'm curious to see which items you may disagree with or approve of. I have no doubts that I could survive for 24 hours with the items I selected, but also know I could survive without any of them for 24 hours.
I'm a complete supporter of SKILLS over GEAR. Spending the time to learn skills IN THE DIRT, will serve you better than any piece of gear. I don't mean pretending to have accomplished a skill once - I am talking about putting your skills into practice. The ability to accomplish the necessary tasks with little to no resources - without a trip to the Dollar Tree. Skills and knowledge can never be taken away from you - that is the true value of wisdom. Press yourself to accomplish and achieve more. You will not be disappointed.

It's great to have informational videos like yours. But, showing alternative choices as well. As well as matches (reduced to waterproof container to save space) a Bic lighter ( or 2 or 3) with a spark wheel that can be used even if the fuel runs out. For food, bring items that don't require water to prepare and use your water to drink. If you must, lentils and rice are great, but use minit rice as it takes half the amount of water. This gives you iron, protein, and carbs.

Great kit. If your shower liner has magnets at the bottom edge, as many do, adding a sewing needle to your kit (stuck in your wallet or a seam in your shirt) would provide a compass as a bonus. The larger matches also give you plenty of kindling, since they are only needed for 24 hours, according to the rules. Won't need too many fires during that length of time.
@RagnaroksHomesteading
@RagnaroksHomesteading 8 ай бұрын
Great tips! The needle would be a definite advantage. I agree with the kindling idea as well. 24 hours is not a long time at all. Thank you! 🌲🦌🌲

Another good thing to purchase now is live catch traps. Fairly cheap and allows you to catch food and keep it alive rather than hunting, killing and needing a way to keep it cold or preserve it. Long term not overnight survival.

That's pretty much what most of my kit looked like when I first started as a kid but most of it was scavenged, the pot was one of my mother's old ones, took the handle off, drilled a couple of holes under the lip and a metal coat hanger as a bail handle. Bailing twine and jute twine for cordage, jute sacks filled with leaves to sleep on, did have a WW2 poncho and canteen though. It does you good to cut the kit back to basics occasionally, reminds you of what it's really all about and what you started doing it for to begin with.

some decent choices, but I have to point out that those dry beans have to soak submerged in water for 24-36 hours before cooking. and then would still need more water to cook ( the soak water will be cloudy and bitter as hell, and most will be absorbed) the amount of water you have will not be enough to make a day's worth of those beans, and would leave you with nothing to drink. yes, processed food is not a great option, but in reality you can go 24 hours with out food, and for energy and comfort, a can of soup, or pork & beans would have been a much wiser choice here. I see a lot of people putting dried beans in survival kits, and if you were setting up a remote INCH shelter, then yes, they would be great, but for a get home/get rescued scenario, instant easy and no water required food is far and away a better option. for high protein , Jerky is a good option as well. the salt and oil in that fish might make you even thirstier. separate question: is the tin the fish in lined? most food tin cans are lined anymore, which protects the food, but also makes it so heating IN the tin is potentially very bad.

I suggest, you start thinking again - two items wasted on food? You don't need ANY food in a 24h-challenge! The same for the water - you need 2qt a day, so take a more substantial 1qt. bottle. The santoku-knife isn't a chopper at all, it's a slicer - don't try to baton anything thicker than your thumb, make your firewood from sticks, that you can break without a knife. I think, you'd be better off with one of their steak-knives. Go with a BIC-lighter instead of matches and get a LED-headlamp replacing one of the food items, your candle won't give much light and you can't walk around with it. That leaves you with just 5 items, I would have chosen too, pot, shower-curtain, cordage, candle and duct-tape. IMHO that's poor.
@RagnaroksHomesteading
@RagnaroksHomesteading 8 ай бұрын
Thank you for your opinion. It may be poor(IYO), but it met the challenge extended to me. Gods honest truth is I don't need any of this to survive 24 hours anywhere, as I'm sure you wouldn't either. 🌲🦌🌲

@@zchuss1- you're right, I call it 'smart batoning', but these kitchen knives are very thin and fragile, even the steak-knives DollarTree offers are more suitable.
