Good news, I like the concept. Bad news, my wife will have to put up with me making up more kits! A few contributions: (1) I tend toward a multi-tool versus a pocket folder. (2) on my Mora's, I take a mini ziplock, put a sail needle, about 10-15 feet of heavy thread and a couple safety pins in it, fold it up and tape it to the back of the sheath, with a bit of pvc tubing on the side for the ferro rod sheath, and the cord wrap -- pretty similar to what you show, but with the needle and thread on the back, (3) You can get UST Folding Map Compasses on Amazon right now for $7 each, (4) No job is complete until the paperwork is done - either wet wipes, toilet paper or (my preference) some paper towel sheets . . . 'cause what goes in must come out. Cheers! And keep the vids coming, I love 'em all.

Since this kit is designed to be given to someone who is less prepared, I would add in a whistle. They may wander off and get separated. A whistle takes less energy and is much louder than yelling.

Love your vids. I have a few of these "mini trail kits", never thought the term "hand out", but that's why I made them. Without going berserk, you could add a button compass, a hundred feet of #12 bank line, a 1L whirl bag and a couple Aquatabs -- total weight about 4 oz, total bulk about a half an Altoids tin. Go crazy and add 3-4 yards of 2" Gorilla tape wound onto an old gift card, and that's maybe 2 oz more. Add a mylar e-bivvy to the survival poncho and you keep your legs warm - - - of course, the search and rescue guys may be confused when they come across a 200-lb baked potato in the woods!

Good idea to send family and friends out with a minimalist survival "day bag" even for short hikes. I highly recommend adding a JetScream 122 dB whistle in case they get lost. This item can save their lives by allowing others to hear them from nearly a mile away. Just teach them the universal distress signal, NO, NOT SOS, but three short blasts to signify distress. Aim it in each direction and BLOW/BLOW/BLOW and they will have effectively covered nearly 4 square miles. I would also add some gorilla tape and bank line in case they need to rig up a shelter with that blanket. Lightweight and little cost since you won't need very much.

Hey Sootch. Good ideas as always! One trick I use with the disposable lighters - tie a small zip tie under the 'gas pedal' of the lighter. Prevents it all from getting pressed leaking out while getting jostled in storage. Hopefully the unprepared don't cut a finger removing it:). Be strong!

Great video. The idea of a hand out kit is spot on. The "lone wolf" prepping idea is in my mind all wrong. If everyone around you is doing well, you will also do well. If everyone around you is starving to death while you are sitting fat, man I hope you can sleep with one eye open. The goal we should all strive for is security for your self and your family, but also extended family, neighbors, and potentially other people in your community.

But yep I had my P38 My sister asked me to make her a kit similar to my stuffed Maxpedition Fatty. If someone doesn't know Enough to bring a hiking kit with them, would they know what the itema were let Ali e how to use them. Maybe add a quick info sheet like use ONE cotton ball as firestarter. Fill the trash bag full of leaves and climb inside, paracord has 7 inner strands, etc. I know some kits like SOL have similar sheets that you could even photocopy.

This video convinced me to subscribe to your channel. The idea of a "hand out" kit is something I've never seen before, but I've made many dozens of them. I like that you've kept the first kit simple, someone who isn't a "prepper" may not know how to use a ferro rod or fatwood. And the second kit fits someone a bit more savvy. Good to have kits you can match to someone's abilities. I've been making "survival" kits as a hobby since 1977. I have given lots of them away along the years, but I can still outfit an entire platoon of jarheads if need be ;-) Actually, I keep these kits for all the family and friends who will undoubtedly show up here when the shtf...

Both Kits should have cordage, as it is both stupid versatile and can make setting-up shelter easier. With the Vaseline cotton-balls, or any other fire-starter that can be compressed, fill the relevant ziplock to full then stuff some more. Even experts mess-up! Maybe a laminated card that tells the end user what everything is and some tips on use. Lastly a whistle would probably be a good bet, puts out sound for a good distance with minimal effort and I've not heard too many natural sounds that are similar. P.S. Signal mirror, most probably won't know how to use it but it's simple to learn. Good content regardless, and we all know how embarrassing it is to forget some things before a trip. (Best) Worst case, cannibalize one to make-up for anything forgotten at home during a trip!

One thing you might consider is a small bar of soap. Like the ones from a motel. One of the beat safeguards against infection in a wound is to wash it with soap and water. Also good for hygiene purposes and they weigh next to nothing. Really enjoy the videos. A little heated water, some soap and the bandana can be used to make a guy feel a little more human by washing up even when your not in an emergency situation.

As your number 1 survival tool is knowledge, I would include some basic information on usage of items in the kit, as well as instruction on how to survive until help arrives, and how best to get help. Also a whistle and button compass are small, inexpensive, and useful. Likewise iodine tablets are very small, add a few to the first aid kid. If nothing else have a card with the helpful instructions "DON'T PANIC"

I really like the concept of this, One thought: if you're making a kit for someone who doesn't know better, then they're probably not that knowledgeable about how to use some of this gear. It's easy for some of us to forget that a lot of people aren't aware of all the myriad survival uses of a bandana, or how a heavy duty trash bag can be fashioned into a tarp or a poncho. A really inexperienced person, especially in a stressful situation, might not even recognize that Frontier filter straw for what it is. Same goes for vaseline impregnated cotton balls. Maybe include a single sheet of really basic instructions/guidelines for what to do if they find themselves in a survival situation.
@Gouveia1007 жыл бұрын
Very good ideas. You might want to consider swiching your batery flashlights for a dynamo flashlight, the ones you crank a small lever and each turn is like 2 min of light. Well done man. I've never really considered a spare kit for an unprepared companion but I make up almost this exact kit for friends. It's kind of unacceptable to me that my friends don't at least have basic support in their car. Usually I use a knock off of the small bags from many of the quality brands. Typically I include 3 knives, small fixed, folding and in the first aid always one of the smallest victorinox knives (small, very sharp knife and tweezers.) Also the same filter straw, a bandanna (often from a thrift store,) collapsible canteen and a couple treatment tabs, fire kit that includes a bic, whistle, pen and paper, flashlight, always a compass (they may not know how to use it but I bet in a crisis they can figure it out,) cheap but UV sunglasses, emergency blanket, para-cord bracelet, light or fingerless gloves, boo boo kit that will include pain releavers, pepto, burn and antibiotic ointment, a couple Clif or granola type bars, often a pack of playing cards (which can be used for fire if necessary too.) I'll never admit to anyone I give these too but depending on your role in my universe, the gloves, glasses, first aid and food may get up to a pretty good quality (or quantity.) Maybe I'd be a better person if everyone were equal but the fact is there are a handful of people that are at least thought of as critically necessary (not considering those who share my roof) to me.

Great Idea. I prefer the cheaper one for a handout as I would hope I would have complementary items in my gear. Great idea! Most likely already in the comments, but perhaps a whistle, a cheap compass, a pack of pocket tissues (TP), and one of the P38/P51 can openers. I agree with the suggestions of a small how-to, and a bit of cordage. For those of us who are less affluent, I see a few ways to lower the cost: Use a Personal IDF bandage in stead of those with the pressure bar. I EDC one myself and know how to use a twig or stone for pressure. Pack the kit in a zip-lock bag within a zip-lock bag. Most of the kit can be distributed to pockets anyway. Pack the kit in a plastic bucket (multiple uses). Less handy and quite a bit more bulky, but ... BTW: Seems like you forgot cotton balls with Vaseline and a boo-boo kit in the better kit ;-)

I love the hand-out bag concept . . . especially for all the folks who haven't got a clue that even a thunderstorm can cause a "get out" scenario (ever seen a house that took a direct hit from an 80 ft oak tree?). I happen to use "sling packs", which can be had for as little as $16 on Amazon - this gives a strap, so the hands are free. A bottle bag lets you put the water on your belt and balances the load. I understand the desire to keep the inventory and weight to a minimum, but we're giving this to someone who likely does NOT fall into the "substitute knowledge for gear" category. Accordingly, my list has the sling and bottle bags, a lightweight poncho and mylar bivvy for cover, a bic/matches/pet balls/fatwood for fire start, a 1L bottle with stainless cup, a frontier straw, 50 ft of bank line, 50 ft of paracord, a headlamp and flashlight (both AA, with spare batteries), a 27" bandana, a pair of socks, a pair of gloves, a whistle, 5 yds of tape on a card, a mini FAK (includes sewing stuff and otc meds), a small pack of wipes, a small bag of paper towels, 2 food bars and some hard candy, and a pepper spray gel vial. Not a BOB, but far better than nothing. Notice, no compass, maps, axes, saws, or anything like that - enough to get through a bad night or two. I do have some calories -- I'm diabetic and can live without insulin for a couple days, but hypoglycemia can kill you as fast as hypothermia.

Space blankets. They pack flat so 2 wouldn't be a problem. Bank line, especially tarred bank line. Comes in 2 sizes and has a number of uses. On the plus side, a hank of 25 yards packs down small. Bright orange surveyors tape. What you have in your pack plus this and I'd be a happy person.

Good idea in the short term, but I think it just encourages the idea that someone else will always have what you need when you need it, which is not what those of us who are prepared are trying to promote. Obviously sharing is caring, we all know that, but if someone continuously shows up unprepared then there's a limit to how kind I'm willing to be, and I think a lot of us can agree with that.

Wrap 2-3 feet of duct tape around your bic lighters, 3-4 safety pins are handy for fixing torn, broken items, and you really need a whistle even a cheap whistle will do.

I add a tea bag. two of sugar. a chocolate bar and ramen soup. It doesn't take up a lot of space, but it's a great moral and nutritional incentive

I have a FULL set of the Nite Ize Carbiner's. They are THE best I have ever seen. Scotch, check out the ones they make with the locking mechanisms for paracord-AWESOME!

I would hand out light weight military ponchos, paracord, a mora companion, a lighter, and a nice steel water bottle. With that and knowledge of edibles, traps, fishing, knots and bushcraft you could survive for a decent amount of time. And if the person happened to have their phone with a little charge, a picture of their local area map, and a reference point they could get to wherever they need to get. Phone could be replaced by a watch and general area knowledge compared to the reference point.

Great video. I am trying to build out some EDC Altoid tins for giveaways. I am trying to build them out for an office/urban environment . These kits are good to throw in my cats and will definitely use these. Seems like a compass would be nice to include.

I'd add maybe some soap? It would be a great camp morale booster as well as save on spreading germs. You could even cut bars or use Hotel bars. Plus maybe some really small bottle of dish soap as it is highly concentrated and antibacterial. Whistles. Definitely whistles. I bet you could communicate better over long distances with a whistle rather than yelling. Maybe include a card with some basic Morris Code (at least how & why of S.O.S) Blank paper & pencil or pen for the person to take notes, etc... If there is anything survival you need to teach them on the fly it will be better absorbed by writing down the important stuff (like school I know). Also does not take up much room. If your gonna include note cards with survival info you might as well include a couple blank ones. Pencil sharpener would fit easy. Get the person into thinking for themselves on conserving the fire tinder you provided them as well as maybe the other supplies too. One other note. I would add some form of shoulder strap to the bags if you can. The person might need to gather things (wood, food, etc...) maybe carrying multiple things they've collected. Especially if you were successful at teaching them what to look for.

better than soap are wet wipes. Antibacteria, come moist, and after wiping down your face and armpits, you can save it for cleaning up down below.

+Tim Baka I love wet wipes. Got plenty in my bug out bag. 😁

I think a good thing to do, since this'll be for a non prepared mindset person, to have a note of items and/or simple survival tips. I bet a lot of people wouldn't know about the water straws or things like that.

How long does the Berkey Filter water bottle last? This is a great idea. I've thought of putting together a small bag for us here and since the waterproof bags are too much for me in price, I thought I would line the bags with a good plastic bag and then put whatever I can, into zip lock bags to go in it. Thank you for sharing. ❤👍

I've long thought that a similar kit, along with a handgun, some seeds or long lasting food stuffs, in an ammo can would be great for shtf to bring otherwise underprepared potential allies up to speed in a hurry.

For an inexpensive, and very compact bandaging kit, I have a roll of waterproof bandage tape, non-stick gauze (best if cut to size) and generic Neosporin ($1 per tube at Dollar Tree). Small scissors if you can fit them, otherwise cut gauze to size with a knife.

I'm trying to find the military style canteen you are using in your kit. I have been unable to find it. Can you tell me where you got it. Thanks!
