What makes a masterpiece these days lol I gotten used to moving my characters in games and they consider themselves rpg is just pushing one button to do everything considered a masterpiece?
@dragonnasxavier3473 Жыл бұрын
@@kheartslasher1754 In my opinion to make a modern masterpiece JRPG, a lot of things have to line up. Soundtrack, visual style/design, voice acting (if you're going to have it), a plot good enough to keep you invested, worldbuilding and lore, character development, story AND battle pacing so it never feels like a chore or excessive grind, fun and/or impactful surprises and diversions, difficult but not excessively difficult secrets to find, at least one hidden super boss to try out your best on, choices that actually make an impact, character customization.. The list of things that can make a true masterpiece can go on and on. Unsurprisingly the things on this list have spread out of JRPGs into the vast majority of game genres, as JRPGs are what brought a lot of those focuses to the video game market. The best way though to explain what something is, or in this case what makes it, is to give an example. Have you tried Persona 5 Royal? It's the best example off the top of my head from recent times that was an actual masterpiece, although even it has a bit of trouble with pacing at points.

I’m new to the genre so I’ve been looking for cool games to try out. Picked Octopath Traveller because I heard it was good. I just couldn’t get into it. I played like five hours or so and I don’t know if I was doing it wrong, but it was hard as hell. I raged quit when I fought an enemy who poisoned me like every turn. Plus I struggled so much to get the enemies armor down only for them to get it back after one turn. Every fight felt like it dragged on forever. Loved the music and graphics though.
@fishingmule3266 Жыл бұрын
That’s definitely an interesting perspective. I’m enjoying Octopath Traveler because of the challenge but that’s after 20 years of playing turn-based RPGs. Ironically, I think games like Final Fantasy 4, 6, 7, or Chrono Trigger would be a better place to begin because their systems are more straightforward. After getting a deep understanding for battle mechanics, games like Octopath Traveler or SMT become a lot more fun.

@@geojimz It seems you didn't understand the basic combat loop, then. The idea is using the first encounters with a random enemy as a testing ground for their weaknesses, and then after that abuse them to break them and then go all out using all your BP once they're unconscious. After that when you encounter the same kind of enemy, you try to craft a strategy for a turn one kill (you'll even get bonus JP for doing that). You don't really need to uncover all their weaknesses, although it bothers me to see the "?" there, that's why I always have a scholar in the party. Characters level up very fast in the early game, and they recharge all their MP and HP upon level up, so abusing skills like the Hunter's Rain of Arrows is not a bad idea. Also, for a first playthrough, I'd recommend gathering all 8 playable characters ASAP so you can have a better range of actions from the get-go. Anyway, keep this in mind if you want to give the game another go. It's a very fun experience when you get into the groove of managing the battles.

Specifically the gba version, the remake is cool but it's way too easy even on Proud, Osaka team doesn't know how to balance correctly. The combat is a mix of strategy and arpg and it's amazingly unique. My number one complaint is, aside from Riku's mode which is just the second part of the game, there's zero post game content. The story is a great mindbender for our protagonist and if you know nothing about the series you'll be getting mind bent too, well at least 10 year old me was. I’ve been playing through big name RPG series in release date order to see how they evolved over time, and the RPG I really wanted to like, but couldn’t was Phantasy Star 2, I just couldn’t deal with all grinding and I usually don’t care that much about grinding. It’s just that you have about 8 party members and they all join at Lv. 1 and for some reason you need to head back to the house you left at the start of the game to obtain them. Also, the first thing you need to do when starting the game is grind, so it feels like the story comes to a complete halt after you obtain the last party member if you actually want to use them as well as for the final confrontation where everybody needs grind. People also really love the story, but I couldn’t really get into it because the party seems barely involved and the ending comes out of nowhere, because the story is somewhat of a mystery or least it felt like one to me at the start of the game hook the player in. As to why these strange anomalies are occurring in our AI maintained society.

Out of all the games on this list, I recognized three and have my own insights and observations to express. 1. Final Fantasy Type-0 HD-This is one of my favorite FF games ever; one of the best qualities is that it’s the only PS4 game that doesn’t have DLC depriving you of content that should otherwise be included. The entirety of game is on disc/download file. I get the confusion on understanding the battle system as I was a little thrown off at first but once I buckled down and played, I found myself liking the game more and more. It has great replay value, one of my favorite soundtracks, good mechanics, character development with plot depth, and more. I get the overwhelming feeling of trying to get comfortable with 14 different characters each with their own fighting style but if you ever try to give it another go, perhaps you will have a different perspective. 2. Ni No Kuni-This is easily one of my favorite games ever; it was the first PS3 game I ever got platinum trophy and I was overjoyed when an HD remaster came out for PS4 in recent years. Just like FF Type-0, great story, amazing soundtrack by Joe Hisiashi, and interesting designs on the familiars you tame and raise for battle. I can see how the battle system can be frustrating at first but once you get the hang of it, it’s actually not that bad and when you get good familiars with good arsenal of abilities, you can have some epic battles of might and magic. 3. Kingdom Hearts-I will preface by admitting I’ve only played the main numbered entries. I do have the All-In-One collection but as of this message, I’ve only completed 1, 2, and 3; I haven’t finished the other entries like dream drop distance, chain of memories, etc. Don’t get me started on Yozora from Re:Mind DLC because that’s an instant ass kicking from him to Sora; he will take me out faster than I can blink. That aside, I found my experience very enjoyable and eagerly await the release of KH4 when it comes out. Those are my thoughts and thanks for your video.

Earthbound still had some good ideas today's RPGs don't even when they should. For example attacking an enemy from behind and being overleveled for them automatically nets you the win, exp, and items. Also if your character gets attacked and is going to die from it the health goes down, but you have a chance to heal them before it goes down entirely instead of seeing them automatically die thus having to revive with an item or spell.

Saga Frontier is so good but you definitely need a guide for it. It is one of those games that throws you in the deep end while not telling you anything, not even skill progression. It has an amazing concept but the execution is very bad. It is one of those games that kind of deserves a remake in order to flush out exactly what it wants to do while making it more approachable by basically adding in a quest log and other details that update as you progress. They have some amazing characters
@kupomogli Жыл бұрын
The execution is garbage on Romancing SaGa 1 and especially 3. I've never played the second game, but I feel that SaGa Frontier 1 is the first game in the SaGa series to take the open ended gameplay and to actually have a good game. Romancing SaGa 3 on the other hand after you finish the opening scenario has you go through dozens of quests and every single one of them has a boss at the end that just steam rolls your ass. Romancing SaGa 1 isn't as bad, but Romancing SaGa 3 I just can't even stand to play the game because it's constant trial and error to find where to go that you can hopefully make any progress. Once you get destroyed by at the end of the 20th quest boss in a row, it's like, I'm done with this pos game, and I've given it several chances. Straight garbage game. There's a reason some games have stayed in Japan, and it's because the developers saw what pieces of sh** they were and decided not to release them in the west. Not because it was an amazing game that they wanted to keep for themselves.

As a side note for Ni no Kuni, you're free to switch between Uminos and party members on the fly (it's actually more effective to use Oliver on hard battles and boss battles, and your Uminos for support and quick damage to save mp), but i understand why not everyone would love the quirky battle system. Actually the "I really tried to loved it so much" doe me was Xenoblade Chronicles 2, anyway, the story is amazing tough. Same with Octopath, and also the fact that you're not free to use whichever formation you like, and you're forced to pick the episode's character.

FF Type-0's story is similar to FF15 but darker. It puts more emphasis on the horrors of war and how they affect the world than it does on the personal issues of any specific character. Whether it comes to anime or video games, I honestly seem to be in the minority when it comes to liking a world focused story. Most people seem to very drastically prefer character focused stories and especially ones that contain romance.

@countzrathknock6737 Жыл бұрын
As someone who's favorite rpg on the ps1 is Saga Frontier, I totally understand your issues with the game... the remaster fixes a good portion of your issues. They added a quest tracker and gives tips on where to go to advance the main story of each character. Added in new game plus so when you finish 1 story you can carry over items, abilities, levels, and a bunch of stuff to a new story so when you recruit those characters again they already are as bad ass as you had them before I'd say it's worth the effort and I'd even buy you a copy so you don't waste your own money just in case you still hate it.
@countzrathknock6737 Жыл бұрын
I fully recommend starting as either The Robot or Amelia. Lute is one of the quickest with literally only 2 mission points to finish his campaign. But yeah the remaster is such an improvement. Also adds a new character that unlocks after you beat 1 of the other 7. Which expands upon the lore of the world.

Xenosaga Episode 2. Loved the first one and felt it was a fun, albeit extremely anime, experience. Episode 2 rolls around, and as much as I wanted to continue the story, the combat was such a nightmarish slog that I couldn't bring myself to continue. One day, I'll watch the 15 hours of cutscenes on KZbin and try Episode 3.

I had this exact issue, the graphical change and the gameplay just nosedived the whole experience for me, which sucks because the story is so fantastic.
@fishingmule3266 Жыл бұрын
Just watch a combat tutorial on KZbin. Its combat is by far the best in the series, but it’s poorly explained in the game. Just watching 20 minutes of someone explaining how to do it will save you hours and hours of trying to play without using the actual systems available to you.
@jamesoakes4842 Жыл бұрын
@@fishingmule3266 Respectfully, the problem wasn't that I didn't understand the combat, the problem was that it was entirely too time consuming. Having to exploit break points to do any real damage to most enemies meant that even standard battles took like 10 turns of doing nothing while getting shot in the face, followed by unleashing a combo with your whole team to kill the enemy in one go. That kind of thing is admittedly cool for a big fight, but slows down the game way too much to have most of the standard battles be the same way. However, I did take your advice. Watching a video on it have me the following tips: 1) Use Analyze often (I actually did this already), 2) Use elemental abilities to exploit said weaknesses (I used all the ones I had available), 3) Stocking then unleashing combos is the most reliable way to deal damage (my core issue), 4) Only 3/7 characters are worth using (I'll disagree, but if I'm wrong, that's actually another issue with the game's combat), and 5) They recommend grinding for about 30 hours with one character's solo section (not one of the previously mentioned "useful" ones) in order to make the game easier (Not gonna lie, I've done similar things in some other games, but WT ACTUAL F?! His clear data was 90 hours long, 30 of that was a single block of mindless grinding, and that made the process EASIER?) I'm going to double down on my assessment of mindless slog. If you have a particular video you'd like to point to illustrate how I'm doing it wrong, I'd actually love to see it.

I agree 100% on Drakengard, Ni No Kuni (1, 2 is one of my favorite ARPGs of all time. I just loved the kingdom building, citizen recruiting, research part and the story of a character basically spirited from another world as his right hand man is cool, but the fact the ending is actually pretty realistic is a nice touch.), Kingdom Hearts (I played a bunch of 1 & 3, BBS, and CoM, and just could never follow through), and Bravely Default. Honestly, it's a series that gets tons of praise for the same things that the Tactics series, Fire Emblem series, and FF series do, but with the cutesy 'new SE' graphics that actually works well in games like Oninaki (a better game) or I Am Setsuna (a far better story). I genuinely believe, if SE ever remakes FFIX, they'll use a similar graphics engine, and I probably wouldn't be mad. Particularly if they did away with random battles, voiced the cast, and remastered the cinematics.

Damn. I'm sorry that you couldn't enjoy Bravely Default. It's my favorite game of all time and got me hooked into RPGs. In fact I just beat FFV last night, the game that BD's Job System is based on. The story is on the generic side but I really enjoyed the big twist of the game. I really enjoyed the characters and a lot of villains got more depth towards the back end of the game. The combat was so fun and so customizable that even though I've played games with better combat systems, I still hold BD's(and its sequels) in high regard. Plus almost 10 years after I played it, it still has my favorite soundtrack in any video game. Revo hit it out of the park and listening to his songs for the first time in game is something I will never forget. I agree it's not the best RPG out there and it's got its issues, but it's the game that not only got me hooked into RPGs, but got me into gaming as a serious hobby.
