Star Ocean has just been gutted over the years anyway. I loved Second Story and Til the End of Time (never played the first game). After that, it's just been a slow decline. I wish RPGs would just stop getting rid of classic things, like overworld maps. "Modernizing" games is not always a good thing.

Shadow Hearts didn't really deserve it's fate and neither did Golden Sun. AS for Star Ocean I can't really say that it died, even the last game wasn't a bad game for real, just very disappoining compared to the biggest names out there. And frankly that 5th game was made on an extremely tight budget(the game was originally rejected by Square Enix, so Tri-Ace had to do it with their own money, but they had 0 support for it from anyone else) so I can easily forgive them for that.

in the case of nintendo, this company is trapped between doing its old IPs, or doing new ones. at this moment, I think nintendo has at least 25 ips? The visuals of the game in this video ticked something in the back of my head, and reading the plot on Wikipedia, I can confirm it's the one based solely on the magical wind-up keys element. I really liked to see a fourth Shadow Hearts because its gameplay was special with the Judgement Ring. I played the third game first and it was fun. I also own the second game and Koudelka but only a copied disc of the first game I got from a former classmate. I liked their story as well so I won't say the third wasn't as good. On the contrary the third game had the best soundtrack. I always get chills when I listen to Lady Tears (the final boss music)

What? I found the music of the 3rd to be really lacking by comparison. Lady Tears is great, but I prefer both 3 Karma and Battle with Astaroth from the 2nd game. Overall, battle themes is a strong point of the 3rd, but I still think the first two games are comparable or better in this regard. On top of that, the 1st game have so many great edgy and mysterious songs. Psycho Temple, Castle of Silence, Coffin Fetish, Ripper Ripper, Wind Which Blows from the Dark, Angel Heart, Bloody Kitchens, Much Hatred Still Rankles. The 2nd game is a bit weaker in this regard, but still solid, and it makes up for it by having a better depth of great emotional/sad songs, like Faith or Fate, The Fate, Kallen (Karin's theme). Both games also have top tier town and overworld themes. The 3rd game for me really lacks stand out songs. The mysterious songs took an even bigger step back in terms of amount and quality, and the emotional songs are not up to par with the 2nd game. The town themes are forgettable. Will, Fragmentation and Living Sacrifice are some of the few that stands out to me.

Funny enough, Shadow hearts from the new world is my favorite in the series since it's so light-hearted compared to the other 2, and i liked Franky even if he was braindead, and the final boss with that OST and Lady screaming was just beautiful. Covenant had an amazing story but i never feel the need to play the game again since i had completed 100%, but i completed FTNW multiple times because i was really enjoying it. It does have some improvements in gameplay compared to Covernant and much better graphics / animations, and the boss battle (Le Gran Luxe) was my favorite in the series.

Shadow Heart FTNW is a spin-off that isn't part of the main story - it was meant to just fill time before the actual Shadow Hearts 3 which would follow Yuri's father's battle before the first game and was in development but cancelled when Nautilus' parent company was bought out and they were dissolved, and all development was focused on Pachinko machines. There were even pachinko machines with new stories, so FTNW isn't even technically the last Shadow Hearts game made.

Alundra II was amazing, should have gotten a different name.. same for Breath of Fire: dragon quarter. Both amazing games. But wrong name. White knight chronicles was amazing, my favorite game. Sadly they wanted to make it into an MMORPG and keeping online servers open was way to expensive for them. That's why they had to close of the multiplayer, that's what killed it IMO. As a kid, the plot twist to the first Vandal Hearts game totally blew my mind. The moment I finished it, I went back through it all over again. The second one is really good too - once you get a feel for how the AI is going to act each turn, it almost becomes too easy. Flames of Judgement, though, was slow and tedious, and took too long to establish it's characters (such as they were) meaning most people didn't feel inclined to perservere with it.

Agreed on the Shadow Hearts series. The first two were really good (second one was the best imo) but the 3rd one didn't really do the series justice. It's a good game on its own but it doesn't feel like it fits into the series. Also, imo I thought Koudelka was pretty good too. For Lufia II, making it into an action RPG wasn't even the worse. Completely changing the story was kinda pointless, since it kinda defeat the purpose of a remake, but sure, why not. It's not starting well, though... But replacing the amazing puzzles of the original by stupid, mindless QTE? Now that's really the final nail on the coffin. It's really a perfect example of how to not make a remake.

I felt it more like a reboot of sorts, sure, I enjoyed it to be honest, but... Clearely it lost the charm of the original game and cannot be considered a remake with those changes (the puzzles being changed was a big not OK, as the rest was "well, not what I expect but... is tolerable"). But speaking of story changes, the New Game + ending was unexpected for me (and also more like a what if of sorts).

It's sad to see game series destroying a game franchise. Sometimes some games series, do end up becoming alittle stale. So ending a franchise is the sensible thing to do. @@astralwyrm3787 Not sure what you mean, but I think we are not in the same channel, I meant the change from the original DS game (which never came to the west, mind you), and was a traditional JRPG in contrast to the PS3 version, which is a semi action RPG. But in regards to what you said, I was kind of disappointed they removed the familiar system, the PS3 game has a system with a lot of potential, but also needed lots of polishing, and in the second Ni no Kuni rather than working in the flaws of the system, they decided to give up and came up with something more similar to Kingdom Hearts (a pure action RPG). it's not bad I tell you, it's very fluid and polished, but it lacks the charming uniqueness of the first one, and adding the mediocre over the top corny plot the second has in contrast to the moving and personal plot of the first one it's just insult to injury, I think the actual reason they removed the familiar system from Ni no Kuni it's because Level5 already had Yokai Watch and wanted to center their efforts of monster battling system there. Anyways, Ni no Kuni 2 it's not a bad game, it's plot is really what drags it down.
