The third anniversary of the Story of the Gamecube is coming up and I wanted to share some thoughts with you guys about the video. I'm still amazed that I made this series and really started taking youtube seriously. I started making videos on here all the way back in 2010 with scripted comedy bits. I tried a bunch of different things over the years, but I spent the bulk of the mid-2010's not making videos on a consistent basis. I was in my early 20's and free time wasn't all that common. Eventually the bug was scratching way too hard and I decided to give video making another run. I started working on a series of videos about the gamecube in early 2018. I spent months researching everything I could about the gamecube in an attempt to make the ultimate series on the video. The final product became more of a documentary than I originally intended, but I liked it and kept going. By the time I finished this series, I knew I wanted to keep making videos about video game history. As my first video in the series, The Story of the Gamecube is rough around the edges. The quality isn't nearly as high as it is today and my voice is awful. I have no idea who I was trying to impersonate. But the core foundation is still there. I remember having a ton of fun making this series and it'll always hold a special place in my heart. It's what finally got me into youtube as a platform and I'm grateful for that. And I'm grateful for everyone who has watched this series! If I went back three years ago and told myself that this video would have over 100,000 views, I would have lost my mind. That's the reality today and I'm still as shocked as ever. Thank you so much for watching and enjoy the videos! (Should I remake this at some point? I feel like I almost have to, right?)

I remember vividly the day I got my GameCube in the summer of 2002. I had gone to the store, money in hand, intending to get a PS2 and Final Fantasy X after seeing the game at a friend's house and being very impressed by it. When I got there, I saw that the GameCube was fifty dollars less so, on the spot, I decided to get one so I could get a second game with it. The two games I got were Sonic Adventure 2 and Super Smash Bros Melee and after getting home and playing them I knew I had made the right choice. I never regretted it and to this day the GameCube is still my favorite game system ever.

I knew a kid in 6th grade named Justin who’s grandma gave him like 20 dollar a week allowance and would just buy stuff from other kids cause he was pretty much the only kid with money. I wanted a Gamecube for Christmas but as the youngest of 4 I knew my parents would never spend that much on just me, so I started selling my old N64 games I never played anymore to him for 20 bucks a piece. After getting rid of Mischief Makers, A wrestling game, a shitty racing game I can’t remember, and the south part game I was able to give my parents 80 bucks toward my present. They went the extra mile and got me Smash Melee cause they knew how much I loved playing it at my friends.

About the stereoscopic 3D: Panasonic (who also developed the dvd drive for the GameCube) made a stereoscopic 3D screen for the GameCube. Nintendo actually showcased the 3D display (which was mounted on top of the GameCube) in 2002 or 2003 on the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Only thing was that they didn’t turn on the 3D effect so everyone thought it was a normal display that could be used with the GameCube. Great video. I still own a GameCube.

As an American, you probably should've mentioned Europe when it came to receiving games like Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing on their home consoles; as it was also their first introduction to the series too.

I got a GameCube in 2005 and was very happy with it, it had the best first party games, the minidisc was annoying and some games were split into 2 disc's but the gameplay more than made up for it.

So I was introduced to your channel thanks to your compilation of the entire series of videos you did of Nintendo versus Sega and now I'm watching your video of the life of the GameCube all of your videos put together, and I'm noticing something but to be honest it probably was something I think you resolved cuz I don't think I noticed it in your later Sega versus Nintendo compilation, but I kept hearing stuff in the background when you recorded your voice. Anyways, I grew up in the 90s so I was actually quite familiar with the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis and also quite familiar with the N64 and the PS1. I was 13 years old when the GameCube came out and I definitely loved playing the GameCube but even back then I could admit there was some problems with it especially when I noticed that medal of Honor rising Sun which was an excellent first person shooter at the time that game required two discs on the GameCube version while the Xbox and the PS2 versions only required one disc. Of course there are a lot of other games that required two discs, but my goodness we should have been past that. Sure during the PS1 era there was some games on that console that required two discs, but technology had advanced so that just should not have been the case in the next generation but it was with the gamecuben that was kind of annoying. The first home console I ever bought came out when I was 18 and that was the Nintendo wii. I think I also bought the Nintendo DS or it was bought for me as a Christmas gift I don't remember. Obviously since I'm well into my adulthood at 33 years old every game console I have I have bought for myself, but anyways looking back at the GameCube it was awesome, but there were some things that a lot of us didn't seem to like back then which even included the controller. I'm not kidding, some of my friends when they came over would complain about the GameCube controller all the time, but nowadays it's considered one of the greatest controllers ever. I think just cuz of how weird the controller was and how the buttons were different sizes it just seemed kind of odd, but looking back at it I realized the design was genius. Making the a button so big made sense it made the controller's buttons all different shapes and having the a button be so big is perfect because it's the button you are going to use the most.

Sega released infrared Genesis controllers during the Genesis's lifespan. And, Sega also made infrared controllers for the Saturn. You can look them up if you don't believe me.

Oh Boy, your passing mention of the Wavebird controller was pathetic. To this day it's still one of the best controllers out there for any system. For being wireless the response of that controller is unbelievable and reliable.
@illmitchjax4 жыл бұрын
'pathetic' wow haha... strong words, calm down 0.o He had already mentioned that the GCN controller layout is one of the best ever, the fact a wireless version was then made doesn't need to be elaborated THAT much...

Don't forget it doesn't have rumble if that's an important feature to a player. So it did have at least one downside. But I do remember GI's thoughts on it. They called it Martian technology!

And 6 years later, Nintendo is once again the dominating force of the video game industry, at least in respect to gaming consoles. Xbox/Microsoft has almost no exclusives, if they do they aren't great and they are transitioning to a Xbox-Windows hybrid. Sony still has a few exclusives but aside from that whatever is out for the PS5 is out for the PC, same with the Xbox. Streamers on KZbin and Twitch have made the PC an incredibly popular platform. Go to your local Walmart, Target, and Best Buy and you will see LED mechanic keyboards and PC peripherals on the shelves, something you would never see in 2006 or even 2013. The question now is if Nintendo can keep up with the PC, it has certainly beaten the other two console makers. The traditional console method of gaming is done for, PC hardware advances too fast and a decent PC that can game is around the same as a console. Nintendo's approach was right the entire way. The Gamecube had more performant hardware but what kept it back was the proprietary discs and sizes but would it then have just ended up as another Xbox? The Gamecube's small cube design with handle and distinct comfortable controller were so different than the competition and they stood out. The same with the Wii, completely distinguished themselves from the PS3 and Xbox 360 and they were at the time the "lesser" of the PS3/Xbox 360 but they were also just "different". You owned your Wii for a very specific reason whereas a PS3 or 360 was simply due to preference a Sony having better exclusives. Nintendo always had a "gimmick" to their consoles, the Switch having removable controllers, which is great when you use it. The Gamecube's wireless controller was also a huge step forward. Nintendo realized early on that gaming was going from tight constrained desk/room to a more mobile setting with friends etc and that started with the Gamecube, continued with the Wii and probably went too far but the Switch reeled it in a made it the complete rendition. Ultimately their first party games are superb, a quality seal of a decent game if you buy anything Nintendo. Where they lack is always in graphics and ONLINE multiplayer and third parties, but many third party games aren't as memorable. Even looking back at the Gamecube, it had better graphics/framerate for majority of third party games. This is NIntendo's strong suite, the get together friendly hardware and their IP. The focus should be on some new IP in addition to existing, dont bother with online multiplayer or best graphics etc. As for me personally, I probably played the PS2 more than the Gamecube, and I played single player PS2 games with my siblings where we would take turns for a longer amount of time than on the Gamecube. If we wanted to actually play together though, it was always the Gamecube for me. However, when I played the games on Gamecube I really had a great time, even by myself. I only played maybe 1 PS2 game by myself vs with siblings. I always found it daunting seeing how small the Gamecube was and how it could run such great games, compared to the big bulky and loud PS2. For me, of course the PS2 should be able to run this game and that game it's huge, but the Gamecube having "different" games yet still great and despite its small form factor, was always attractive to me as a kid.

Nintendo nearly had it all in the bag in the western market! If they had been a bit more savvy, they could have done a huge marketing campaign that would highlight both the family friendly aspect AND the content available for more mature audiences! What a shame.

I’d say the most “off” Nintendo has been, was during their Wii U tenure. But they learned from past mistakes, and brought us the switch. A console that has sold very well, and that has been positively received by fans and critics alike.

@@jimbeaux89 it felt like Nintendo was trying to find themselves, in a post GTA3 world. Sunshine wasn’t that great, to me. The rerelease on Switch reminded me of that. Double Dash...I honestly don’t remember why I couldn’t get into this game, but I remember putting it aside, about a month after purchase. I will say, I did enjoy Eternal Darkness. I didn’t find Melee enjoyable. I could go on. N64 is my favorite Nintendo system. I had so many incredible moments playing that system. Not to mention how revolutionary it was. I didn’t feel that with the GC. Also, they made so many blunders that didn’t help. Introducing that Zelda trailer, then give the public Wind Waker instead was huge. Almost like FF7 being announced for PSone instead of the 64, huge! E3’s dedicated to games like Pac-Man vs., while people waited for the MEGATON announcement, which never came. Of course, this is all personal taste, Honestly, I bought the GC on launch day, hated it, repacked it, and got my money back. Thats the only time I’ve don’t something like that. I bought another one, later. I don’t remember what compelled me to. Maybe it was the release of Sunshine.
