Losing isn't necessarily the hard part. It's incredibly hard to not get salty when your 2 mana commander ends up costing 12 mana to cast after spending 5 turns trying to cast it.

As someone who got into it recently, ill say its very fun. The thing i always disliked about other card games is the idea that you want as few cards as possible and super meta plays and playing all the big fun cards is too unreasonable of a scenario. Commander solves all of that, 100 cards exactly required no more no less. Allows for plenty of style crafting and room for fun cards, more relaxed gameplay etc. etc. It takes a good bit of courage and finding the right people, but if you do its some of the most fun you'll have

When I was introduced to commander, I borrowed decks for the first 3 months. I went 0/27, including many situations where the person who got 2nd kingmade and chose to remove me. Around 20 losses in a row with no victories, I will admit I was no longer losing gracefully lol

@@pizzarhino well depends In saw cedh, if youre a turbo player in a midrange meta your winrate will be higher despite every deck beinh roughly equal because turbo has advantage over midrange Same with midrange in a stax meta or stax in a turbo meta

@@mrtekbunny yeah that makes a difference. They don't even need to be strong to make you a target. My main example is the Prosper Tome-bound precon that can steal cards sometimes. Made people really annoyed whenever I played it

Some things I'd like to add to this. 1. Listen to the cat. 2. Moxfield is also more secure compared to other places. I tried out Tappedout, but the place occasionally redirected me to a phishing scheme page. Also, it wasn't mentioned but you can also play test the deck online there. 3.There is times where someone does something that you're going to hate. And I mean things like Kingmaking, or you are targeted exclusively by a single person. Keep calm as much as you can. 4. *TALK* with the table with things with Rule 0 discussion. As one who sometimes uses decks that are typically seen as toxic, I need to discuss it with everyone so they can relax and know what to expect. I purposely make it known what the main wincon for one of those decks. Sometimes, sharing that info will help people be more accepting of that kind of deck. Infect? Say it's Dimir Aggro, which isn't the most feared version. If someone doesn't want to face it still, respect their wishes and play with a different deck if possible. 5. Remember that a deck can be anything that is stupid sounding, like Chair Tribal or Women Looking Left. Some of the funnest decks can be something that is not competitive. Do not assume that a deck is immediately competitive.

Threat Assessment and learning to lose are so important in this format, especially since your threat assessment helps you win and if you have an opponent whose threat assessment is awful, you can find yourself being targeted very often even if someone else is literally about to win, or just because you are playing a commander/deck style that they hate. This happens when I play Hinata, I had to learn to be comfortable with losing often not just because she will get targeted on the board, but I will often get targeted even when others have a threatening board state just because they have a bone to pick with my commander choice. It's the same phenomena that happens in multiplayer online gaming where people see a famous streamer in the game and ignore everything no matter how important just so they can get the satisfaction of beating that one person. If you play with something people hate, be prepared to get focused down and lose even if other players are in a better position. Of course I have plenty of decks to play so if I get tired of it, I just play something else and start winning because I know their threat assessment is bad and can take advantage of it.

Late game tension, good wording choice for that part of the winning strategy tips, so so many games I don't have the win and still win! It's all about reading the players and paying attention to the decks they are running and using good threat assessments. Table talk/poker face can get you a win if done properly. Not really making deals, I rarely offered or accepted deals, but making comments about my/others hands or board state, keeping your board state to match the another players threat while not making yours seem overwhelming. Not giving away your true win con in game while making them think you are. Decks that have multiple ways to win that all cards synergize, that also can have a balanced looking board and rebuilds itself easily are always a great time

Win percentage can get warped if people bring overpowered decks into the pod. If people agree that their power level is going to be 5-6 and you bring your optimized level 8-9 deck your odds of winning are pretty high. As to Synergy, I believe that gets hurt by “auto includes”. By the time you put in all those powerful cards, you have less room for the synergetic ones.

Player B could actually pass, see if anyone has a response, and if not he could ask player C to tap a land for Mana, and that would reset priority. Just tapping a land sounds strange I know, but it does count as an activated ability so it does reset priority.

One point that kinda slid under the radar in this vid that Im glad you guys brought up is understanding people’s decks is PARAMOUNT to assessing who the threat is and when to start taking people out. If you know your opponents gameplan and have experience playing against that archetype or playing it yourself you will know when they need to be taken seriously as a threat and when they don’t have anything going on. I think newer players get caught up in this and a simple way to solve that is by rotating decks with your playgroup: play your friends’ decks if they’ll let you! Maybe not at an LGS, but if your pod is trustworthy (which it should be) just pass your deck to the player on the right and go ham! It WILL help how you play against them the next time youre up against their deck

Played at my local game stores commander night the other day and they are a fairly new shop. Only been open for like 5 months. There was a pod playing and 2 of the players were new to magic and this other guy in the pod was missing land drops and salty about a play someone made. Slammed his cards on the table and then left the shop for a few minutes. That learn to lose tip cannot be stressed enough.

I whole heartedly agree with Fun > Winning. Whatever you find fun, do that. It doesn't matter if your fun is playing janky big creatures/spells or high power/cedh. Play what you like the most. Make sure not to ruin someone else's fun in the process. I'm not saying sacrifice your fun for the sake of others but to make sure that everyone has an equal opportunity to display their own level of fun. For example I play a lot of mid to high level at my lgs so I made the choice, not sacrifice, to exclude Food Chain from my Prossh deck. It was no fun to play one card and win the game where other decks are unable to do the same. I setup my deck to use different strategies and as a result the deck is more fun to play and to play against. I really enjoyed the theme for today's video.

My playgroup has gotten good with all of these but threat assessment still needs work. Some nights it seems the table leans too hard into vengeance and that leads to unexpected wins from whoever isn't a part of the revenge attacks. I've had nights where my playgroup targets me based on how well I did in a previous night even if I'm not doing well in game leading to other players board states going unchecked for multiple turns. I take it as a compliment but man it can be rough when all I have is a mana dork and someone ignores the 10/10 kraken or 6/6 flyer because they "think" I'm going to do something lol.

The explanation of holding priority and it’s impact on the casting of mass removal was completely unknown to me. Thank you. Does holding priory have any other examples in terms of impacting in-game decision making that you guys can share? I would love to see a video on advanced mtg rules (I’m sure I’m not qualified to say what rules are and aren’t advanced) and examples the way it was presented in this video. I’ve been playing for years, again only with 1person, and this rule was completely unknown to me. Probably because I never play with others!

holding priority determine who has to spend a counterspell, who spend ressource exemple you attack with a 2/2, blockers are declare, then everyone pass priority, if opponent has removal and active player has pump spell, when everyone has pass priority, nobody has the chance to interact, so at this point you can't pump and opponent can't use removal. Also a permanent entering the battlefield doesn't put anything on the stack except if it has an etb, so you can't kill an artefact or planeswalker when it comes into play, they always have the chance to be activated.

There is 1 tiny detail about priority that you guys forgot. If any player who has priority makes any action, which includes tapping a land for mana, priority resets. You can use this if for example you are player B and you know player C has a counterspell but refuses to use it. You can ask player D to tap a land for mana to reset priority and still use your own counterspell. Also known as forcing your opponents to use their interaction or sweet talk your way into someone resetting priority so you can still respond.

It's not about using the stack, it's about 'taking an action'. To summarize it; * A players passes priority if he doesnt take any actions. * An activated ability is considered an action. * An activated ability can be recognized by '{cost} : {effect}' * The mana abilities on lands are officially an activated ability, therefore considered an action. * Whenever a players makes any action during priority, another round of priority starts. This is all within the rules, probably not intentional though.

I know everyone's meta is their own but I find if everyone is playing 2 board wipes and 8 removal spells the games tend to drag out way longer and reset constantly, and removal tends to follow the same trend as Stax where players just can't even play the game they want to play? While I probably don't play as high a level as you; having 4 extra ramp or draw, and then a few extra synergy pieces speeds up the game, and can even shield you against some of that removal. Board wipes don't matter as much when I've hard ramped 4 times and have 12 cards in hand. Feels more like rival forces amassing, instead of vague ideas of what could have been; fizzling before they take form.

Agreed - being able to talk your way out of a deadly situation or making an ally ends up paying off in the end. Sure you might lose sometimes but it's the dynamic of striking a deal with an opponent that makes commander fun!

I think one of the biggest things is players need to understand that if you continuously play a much higher power level deck than everyone else at the table then people will focus you. You can't get mad when you get zerged down by everyone.

I've been curious lately about how to qualify cards that fetch multiple lands into your hand without putting lands into play. The classic card for this is Gift of Estates. Is it ramp? Not really, as you don't have more mana next turn than you do this turn besides your normal land drop. I think it's more like card draw, in that it puts cards into your hand that you can then play later. True?

Correction RE: Tip #2? If player B passes priority and Player C counters, Player B doesn't exile their whole board. The counter occurs before the spell begins resolving. In all, Player B would not have gotten board-wiped if Player C countered. The point that could have been made may be the following: If Player C jumps the gun before allowing Player B priority, Player C is using his/her counter spell before making sure Player B has a counter or not.

You are misunderstanding the tip. Player B wants to sac his whole board before the board wipe resolved so his stuff goes in GY. If player C counters before player B passes prio, player B wont have to sac his board.

something spikes should also how weak to make your deck. i have a ~50% win rate by still make the mistake of accidentally making decks way to strong for my playgroup simple because i'm a way better deck builder. you shouldn't be afraid to play bad pet cards in most playgroups as the average commander player is probably on that cards level.
