My great aunt had given me a 1963 VW Bug with an automatic transmission; her mom had bought it new, back in the day. I happily spent time, $$, & energy making him into the Herbie from Lindsay Lohan’s “Herbie Fully Loaded”. I hug him every day, & talk to him when I take him out to do errands around town. I even talk to him when I have my friends in the car. I get lots of smiles and waves from lots of people over here in Irvine California. People have wanted to take pictures so I let them. They’re so happy, which gives me joy and happiness

I lived in upstate NY, and people bought the Beetle because it was cheap, cheap and easy to fix, and the weight of the engine on the back tires allowed you to get by without snow tires in the winter for flatter roads. The problems included low power and cold with foggy windows in the winter, especially after the duct work started to rust. The Corvair was GM's copy of the Beetle with more power, that Ralph Nader had a book for it's bad handling suspension that was fixed later, but too late to save production.

I remember when I was a kid, I wanted a bug so bad, and I convinced my dad to get me one, so I started to look at the recycler, and found a VW for sale near the Paramount Studios, so me and my dad went over to look at it, and it was one of the screen used Herbie ! It was the one from Herbie Goes Bananas, it has a fake rag top, and it still had all the Taxi writing from the movie, it also had the mounting of the hydraulics that were used for the hood to open and close. Herbie didn't have the engine. The guy who was selling it, showed us the title, and it was still under Walt Disney Productions, so my dad thought it was going to be too much money to get it up and running, so he didn't get me Herbie. I was so sad 😢. The guy just wanted 350 bux for it! I wish I can go back in time to get it. That's my Herbie sad story 😢

I can recall not having money for a new starter, so in order to start the car, I’d always search for a slight decline to park on, then turn the key, let it roll in neutral, pop it into second gear, and the engine would start! Did that for about 6 months! : )

I think the cliff stunt car didn't have a 53 gumball on the door because the dorr needed to be cut to not scrap along the ground amd adding the number would have made that more obvious 🤔 Great video! Glad I stumbled on it (and stuck around for KITT and The A-Team van)!
@CarStarz425 ай бұрын
Thanks, well the documentary I saw said it was mistakenly left off and if you think about it, even if the door was trimmed they could still stick on a circular decal like that in the center of it, even if they needed to make it a bit smaller, and no one would be the wiser at distance like that, but leaving it off entirely was very noticeable, so that wouldn't really make sense.

Great video, and thank you for the kind words on the 1:18 Hot Wheels Elite Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo. I designed that casting, along with a lower end version of it for our Heritage line with less features/ cost and a 1:43 scale version as well. We started out with making the original Herbie the Love Bug and offered two versions in 1:18 scale, as well as a 1:43 scale version and then made tooling revisions to make the HGTMC version. So there are many versions out there in total and should all be available to find. I do need to give credit to Tory A, who acted as a consultant on this and gave me some pointers for details/ accuracy and at the time he owned at least one, if not two actual Herbie movie cars. He was kind enough to even send me pieces of Herbie's stripes so we could color match the stripes correctly. It was even his idea for the diamond gem in the "frunk" to simulate the movie detail. They were personally fun for me to work on as I was a fan of the movies as a kid. I still remember cutting up my Cheerios box as a kid for the cardboard cutout of Herbie Goes Bananas, ha ha

As always I love your videos and the facts that you dig deep to uncover. I was so glad you talk about the many misconceptions in the reporting in the past of the "Herbie" movie, this movie is one many of us grew up with and it is the classic tale of the little guy beating the bullies! Only thing I would like to ask is please refer to Porsche as the full name, I worked in my college years for a foreign car service center and when I first started the owner, who was a former pit crew member for the Porsche racing team, slapped me when I said "Porsh", he told me "it is a two syllable word and not something you sit on outside your house". Since those days I correct my friends and workers when they use the name "incorrectly". I was also told a BMW is not a "Bimmer", and the one I laugh at is "British Motor Works"(really, the tag in the door says made in Germany?), love explaining that one. So anyway so glad you are still here and super glad you are still making content! Take care

Thanks much and yes, a great film indeed. Yes, yes I know most us silly Americans mispronounce just about everything when it comes to foreign cars, but then again outsiders of the US, particularly UK folks mispronounce our cars brands and models as well. "Herbie" quite likely was aimed for regular limited production to battle the Renault 8 Gordini 1100 sedan, BMC Mini Cooper S, Saab GT850 Monte Carlo and Ford Lotus Cortina. The particular example finished in "cream" white paint, red-white-blue stripes with the number 53 on it, nicknamed Herbie for the Love Bug movie collection, was just one of them and copies and replicas were built for these movies as narrated here. EMPI offered the DOHC conversion of the Porsche 356 flat-4 engine with over 100 bhp from the 356A, to the 1,966cc unit from the 356 Carrera 2, 130 bhp and a special version of the Porsche 356 Carrera 2 engine with horsepower as high as 250. The latter was used in an example similar to the Love Bug in paint and graphics that set the speed world record for a Beetle of more than 132 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Another "Herbie" saw competition at NHRA-sanctioned races in the quarter-mile strip labeled "Inch Pincher" and at under 14 seconds in the 1/4-mile set the record for the fastest VW Beetle of the day. Apparently Volkswagen wanted a shot in the performance market and later formed a partnership with Porsche with the model called "Herbie" and together the two companies built the Porsche 914 (or VW-Porsche 914.). These Beetles probably sold as the "VW-Porsche Beetle Twin-Cam" with the model set as the sedan companion to the Porsche 356 Carrera 2 roadster and coupe. By 1969 when the first Love Bug movie hit theaters the EPA sanctioned new engine exhaust emissions regulations which forced Porsche to phase out the 1,966cc engine, leaving the smaller 1,582cc unit from the Porsche 912 Super (with OHV cylinder heads) to carry on a while longer and when The Clean Air Act of 1970 arrived the DOHC engine was gone (though the Twin-Cam conversion kit was still made by EMPI) and VW's 1,971cc OHV flat-4 from the 412 sedan took over. The performance version of the Beetke was dropped entirely from the VW lineup in 1976 before the movie Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo hit the box office at theaters the next year. Skyrocketing insurance rates, the impact of the Arab Oil Embargo and unfavorable currency exchange rates between the US dollar and Deutschmark were the reasons for VW to abandon the venture which also spelled the end for the Porsche 914. So the VW-Porsche collaboration ended with the demise of the 914 and tuned Beetles. Only Porsche carried on with the fruits of the idea with the introduction of the 924 coupe in 1976 followed by evolutions 944 and 968.
@angelperez78915 ай бұрын
A custom version of "Herbie" with a 2-seat cockpit (like the Type 1 Karmann-Ghia) was fitted with a fiberglass body by the Myers Beach buggy building company with bodywork styled by Pininfarina along the lines of the Ferrari 206/246 GT called Manx GT and built in Brazil and known there as the Puma GT. This was based on Bruce Myers's original Manx beach and desert racing buggy fiberglass body model first introduced in 1964. The Brazilian cars were actually built on the Porsche 911 chassis while the American versions rode the Type 1 Beetle chassis. After the Porsche 356 Carrera 2 was phased out for 1966 another beach buggy building firm, Bradley Automotive, filled the gap with the GT. Virtually all examples built were kits assembled by the consumer and all were conversations of Beetle sedans. Volkswagen later attempted a front-drive sporting model similar to the Type 3 Karmann-Ghia in concept but based on the Golf platform with retractable hardtop called Eos.

@@CarStarz42 But Volkswagen took "Herbie" to the extreme after acquiring the Bugatti company in 1998, moving away from the old Beetle platform and into a clean-sheet design that replaced the EB 110, the Veyron, with what was once a World War II aircraft engine, a 16-cylinder unit with "W" piston bank format. This engine was 8.0 liters and unlike the wartime engine it was made from four 2.0-liter Golf in-line 4's with each pair for each cylinder bank. Cranking 1,000 bhp at around 8,000 rpm, it was a totally "un-Beetle" engine because it delivered a miserable 3 mpg! That was certainly inappropriate in USA highways for road trips because with that kind of horrendous fuel economy you ran out of gas in as little as 15 minutes! Volkswagen tried to solve the problem with the restyled Chiron which quadrupled the mileage but that still meant 12 mpg in city and highway driving combined. With the EV market looming further into the mainstream Volkswagen's team at Bugatti reinvented the Veyron and fully rebuilt the car with a new hybrid drive train, an 8.3-liter, normally-aspirated engine in V piston format, again with 16 cylinders, the Tourbillion. The discontinuation of the quad turbochargers as in the previous W16 engine dropped horsepower back to below 1,000 but a trio of electric motors, two driving the front wheels and a third driving the rear axle, added about 800 bhp. Top speed was reduced from 305 mph in Super Sport trim level for the Chiron to 277 mph but the new hybrid system improved fuel economy dramatically despite the bigger engine.

Empi (empee) is a huge aftermarket supplier for the vw up to this day. Back in 69 the crew would have been Darrell Vittone and Ron Fleming/Greg Aronson who went on to create FAT which made the NASCAR beetles engines for the most recent films. Empi was know for their Inch Pincher beetles which were record holders on the drag strip

Years ago I was a professional racing mechanic based out of Las Vegas. Our engine builder once told me his father was a big name VW drag racer in the Los Angeles area. His father had worked on the wheel standing Herbie and one other stunt Herbie. He claimed they had that VW gutted dramatically, the engine was set back as far as the could while still getting the trunk closed, and the rear bump was solid lead. He was an honest guy, so I'm sure the story was true.

I read that the 53 missing on the door was intentional as in order to keep the car up on that hidden wheel, the passenger door had to be cut at an angle to prevent it from dragging on the road. A 53 on the door would’ve showcased the cut door as it would’ve been off center.

I thought that too at first, but if you really think about it, they could of just made the circular decal a bit smaller and centered it and no one would be the wiser for a distance shot like that, but many noticed it when it was left off entirely. From the documentary I watched anyway, they stated that they just plain forgot to put it on that particular stunt car for the shot.

There may have been one car with a Porsche engine. That was a very common swap by VW enthusiasts. I have to dig into my Hotrod magazine collection to confirm what I recall that one and only one VW Herbie built for the movie that had a Fuelie 327-365hp Corvette engine setting in the backseat. There were some Corvairs modified with Corvette 327 engines as well. It's possible that the Vette powered Herbie used a Corvair transmission because they wre tougher than a VW transaxle.

It’s amazing the success Disney had, taking an inanimate object and creating such a wonderful little hero as Herbie. Even with the latest reincarnation with Lindsey Lohan, this little hero can still make us love him with his indomitable spirit and crazy antics, even to taking his newfound girlfriend out on a date at the end of the film. I don’t think I will ever grow too old to love a little VW Beatle named “Herbie.

I can dispel some of the rumors. How you may ask? I own one of the cars used in the original Love Bug. I’m the owner of car number 6, which was used in The Love Bug and Herbie Rides Again. Herbie #6 is probably one of the best documented originals out there, but largely overshadowed by some of the others out there. My car was actually a remote controlled stunt car used for some of the stunts that were deemed too dangerous for a stuntman to do. The photo with the dummy on the hood and the interior shot of the passenger side interior with the control box are actually my car. It was rolled during production while filming the mine scene. At the end of the downhill shot when Herbie makes the sharp turn to get back on track, that was Herbie #6. Much of the Cliff area was done as a matte painting to look further out than it was. I’ve confirmed it with a few of the special effects guys that remembered the car rolling over. And to this day still has the damaged roof and plexi glass rear window. In Herbie Rides Again, my car was used for the nightmare scene in a segment that was cut from the film but was documented on the ViewMaster set for the movie. My car still retains the original California title in Disney Productions name from 1968. After filming my car went into storage and eventually went to the MovieWorld Cars of the Stars museum and later the famous Harrah’s Collection. I acquired the car in 1996 .

We've been discussing what Herbie car Dean may have had a a little bit on here and but whichever car, which most seem to believe was actually the Hero #1 car, that he had apparently has gone missing from the public eye anyways.
