And yes the "Phoenix Saga" brought a tear (at the time) to my eyes, not mentioning the X-men's "God Loves, Man Kills" i think thats an injustice to the brilliant story writing skills that once prevailed in the genre of comic books ... despite the above mentioned this was an interesting video

@@sapanparekh3327 The reason they weren't on the list is because this list doesn't include ANY actual graphic novels; what it is referring to as "graphic novels" are actually just trade paperbacks, collected editions of previously published issues of regular monthly comic books. Some people incorrectly refer to all comic books as "graphic novels" because they seem to think that just calling them what they are, comic books, isn't "sophisticated" enough for them, and because they don't bother to learn that "graphic novel" is an actual established term for large, single issue, self-contained sequential art stories, often about heavier topics, as opposed to the ongoing monthly magazines that are regular comic books. Both DC and Marvel have established graphic novel lines; Marvel's were even called "Marvel Graphic Novels." Marvel Graphic Novel #1 was The Death of Captain Marvel, which dealt with Captain Marvel dieing of cancer, the attempt and failure of scientific genius superheroes such as Reed Richard's to cure cancer, Cap's death and funeral, and finally the fallout of his death and its effects on the superhero community and his archenemy Thanos. Marvel Graphic Novel #5: God Loves, Man Kills, was about a fanatical right wing religious group that targeted mutants for persecution as "abominations before God", assassinated mutant children, and delved into the twisted mind of the celebrity preacher Reverend William Stryker who lead them, until he tried to murder Kitty Pryde on nation television but was shot by a New York policeman who was there for security. *Those* are graphic novels. The only things on this list are trade paperbacks, which are most definitely not the same thing. People who refer to all comic books as "graphic novels" are just being pretentious because they think calling them comic books is childish and they want to use a more "serious" term. It's really annoying.

Very true that Marvel was slow getting to the more “sophisticated” storylines when compared to DC. DC in the late 80s was putting out a lot of sharp new takes on existing characters, whereas Marvel was adding bigger and bigger guns to X books and more Liefeld clones.

So all the stuff in the 60s and 70s wasn’t sophisticated like demon in a bottle Spider-Man no more if this be my destiny the night Gwen Stacy died return of the green goblin the coming of galactus the Phoenix saga I’m just saying marvel was doing this since the 60s and just because something isn’t dark doesn’t mean it can’t be adult I get that an adult world is different from a kid world but are you miserable or depressed 100% of the time or are you more happy and energetic and every now and then might get sad marvel is the house of ideas and they will stay like that from now to the end of time

The Marvel Graphic Novel line were titles like The Death of Captain Marvel, God Loves, Man Kills, Doctor Doom & Doctor Strange: Triumph & Torment (one of the best things ever) and The New Mutants (the graphic novel that began the series.) Everything listed here was just collections of the monthly comics.

This list is a good excuse to recommend good comicbooks.

+Biggie Cheese Doug Moench wrote it, the graphic novel came out in 2010 and is worth $80 to $100 since it is very rare, the story itself was written back in 1979, and Doug Moench won an award for best story from it. Also because of "Countdown to Dark", a lot of comic book writes/artists hail the duo (Doug Moench writer/Bill Sienkivics Illustrator) as THE PRIME EXAMPLE of how a comic should be written and drawn. The best match up in the history of comics. By the way, there is no easy way of collecting for this story. If you want the individual issues they are worth about $50 a piece.
@bigboycheesepuffs96446 жыл бұрын
RamsTheNameCom is it collected in any Moon Knight epic collections? I’ve really wanted to get more into Moon Knight
@RamsTheNameCom6 жыл бұрын
+Biggie Cheese Nope, Epic Collections anthology completely skips over "Countdown to Dark". Since "Countdown to Dark" was printed in the back pages of Hulk Magazine. You know Lupis the Werewolf who cameos in that Jeff Lemire Moon Knight story? He's from "Countdown to Dark". You know the story of Marc Spector killing his brother with a grenade which was mentioned in the Max Bemis comics? Well that happened in "Countdown to Dark". If you haven't read any of the new Moon Knight comics then good, they all suck and wrote Moon Knight completely wrong. Moon Knight is not suppose to be insane nor have multiple personality disorder.

Marvels by Kurt Busiek & Alex Ross was a wonderful homage to the Classic Marvel Comics era, from 1939-1973 or so; it deserves the #1 slot in your list IMHO. And, Yes, I do have my copy! 😁❤️ Same with Infinity Gauntlet! Loved it and am currently re reading it in the wake of Avengers: Infinity War/Endgame. As Jim Starlin noted, "Its essentially about a guy who wants to impress his girlfriend. Many fans can identify with that. Demon in A Bottle is one storyarc I am still hoping to get one of these days. Other candidates that deserved mention: Nick Fury/Wolverine: The Scorpio Connection was an excellent look into Colonel Fury's past and character- proving that one Really Should be Careful about one Wishes for. Fury (1994) was a oneshot that can pass as a Graphic Novel, giving the origin of S. H. I. E. L. D. . Union Jack: London Falling- A splinter group of A. I. M. threatens to destroy the capital of the United Kingdom, and only Union Jack, and a handful of lesser known Marvel heroes stand in their way.

While there are some good/great stories here, many people play fast and loose with the term, "graphic novel". There are story arcs represented here (Born Again, Dark Phoenix), trade paperbacks (reprints of story arcs), DC's groundbreaking Prestige Format comics (the first being Miller's Dark Knight Returns), and just plain good stories printed/reprinted on a better paper stock, as in Baxter paper, and an even thicker, whiter paper generally used for full-colour stories. So, what is a graphic novel? Usually printed in A3 size paper, direct-sales only, and gave Marvel and DC the chance to write more "mature" stories, being exempt from the dreaded Comics Code Authority. The X-Men graphic novel, God Loves, Man Kills is probably a more popular (but not better-Claremont can't write worth a damn) example of the format . I really disagree with you on the Infinity Gauntlet maxi-series. While almost everything George Perez draws looks great, the writer Jim Starlin is an overrated plonker, who has the distinction of probably killing off the most characters. The man's obsessed with death! He wrote the first Marvel Graphic Novel, The Death of Captain Marvel (no, not The Big Red Cheese), which is pretty much one long, protracted, morose death scene, as the friends of Captain Marvel gather 'round to pay their last respects, as the titular character slowly dies of cancer. Good times!

Sam Goddard Not sure that's a graphic novel though. It was amazing, don't get me wrong. Spider-Man's original arch nemesis, the man who humiliated him in their first confrontation to the point of barely needing to move his actual body aside from slapping Spider-Man in the face, suddenly given not only Peter Parker's life, but imprinted with his life lesson...but changing very little of his over all arrogance and tactics. The only problem with the series was how poorly executed any of his attempts to avoid detection went. Rachel Summers doesn't read his mind because he threatens to sue? Bull! He just decked Wolverine, who Spider-Man was actually pretty close with at the time! If Wolverine thinks his mind should be probed, probe away! Daredevil knew almost instantly, despite his enhanced senses saying it was the same man he had always known, the behavior was all wrong and he shouldn't have just let it go! He called him "horned head"! It's "Horn Head"! To sum up, Octavious was written beautifully, but everyone else seem to come down with a case of the derps.

But sadly all that went down the toilet when Clone Conspiracy brought Doc Oct back to life and made it seem like him giving back Peters body and sacrificing his life mean nothing. Lets not mention how Doc Octs tenure as Spidey ruined nearly all of Peter relations with friends and allies. Thank god the recent Venom Inc arc happened or else Black Cat would never have gotten over her stupid grudge againts Spider-man, but sadly MJ technically still doesn't want anything to do with him.

Deadpoolrockz6 Made worse when they gave him that stupid prototype clone body. If they were going to bring him back, they should have brought back Otto Octavious. The bowl cut, the portly body, the whole nine yards. He doesn't need spider powers. He never did. They ruined him twice over.

I just can't bring myself to read the Winter Soldier Story, because to me, this was the story where Marvel finally told its readers, no death in any of our books ever really means anything. Because every death of a major character will be undone.
@Bluesit326 жыл бұрын
Rich Brown Likewise. Honestly, I had the same problem with "Under the Hood". The only thing I liked better was that Red Hood stayed a villain of sorts afterwards (at least until New 52). Unlike Barnes, Jason Todd was always unstable. Death just made him worse.
@SexGod2256 жыл бұрын
TheBlues32 Jason Todd has also had much better stories than Bucky. I highly suggest red hood and the outlaws rebirth. It's sooooo good
@markbolger1826 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but I completely disagree with that. Bucky's run as Captain America and then his first Winter Soldier series are absolutely amazing and far better then any of the Jason Todd stories I have read.

"The death of Jean Dewolf sees Spiderman at his worst." Are you mental? Have you seen Back in black? Spiderman beat the fuck out of the Kingpin after he sent an assassin out to kill Spiderman only to shoot Aunt May.
@Bluesit326 жыл бұрын
Tomás Estay Are YOU mental? That beating was minor compared to what he gave the Sin-Eater. Fisk had no permanent injuries. Sin-Eater (who I will avoid naming directly to prevent further spoilers) was permanently crippled, among other things. No one received a beating from Spider-Man like he did. Moreover, he nearly let him die when he was attacked by an angry mob, convinced only by Daredevil, who was being overwhelmed by said mob, pleading with him. THAT was at his darkest...well, aside from his angsty 90s phase, but the less said of that the better.

Tomás Estay The Death Of Jean Dewolff. Excellent Spiderman story! Even reveals some things about Dewolff that even Spiderman didn’t know and it really cemented Spiderman and daredevil as great friends in the main 616!
