The coal mining shot in Uttar Pradesh is somewhat unusual in that they used det cord to tie the shots together. Nonel is a lot cheaper, and is safer than electrical firing systems, since there's no worry of stray eddy currents firing the charges prematurely. Of course, they could have just had a bunch of old det cord that needed using up, who knows.
