I grew up with Gene. My older sister dated him and I used to watch him play baseball and he got me into drums and metal. On of the first albums he got me into was Def Leppard's "On through the Night" and I was hooked. He turned me on to all the cool bands before they went big. I went to Slayer, Anthrax and Dark Angel shows partly because I knew Gene would be there and I looked up to him literally. He used to come over and trash my $200 drumset, but he was something to watch even then. I lost touch with him after high school. Really cool to see him progress in his drumming. That was over 35 years ago.

I think what sets Gene apart is that he plays with such taste. So many drummers in the extreme genre (Death Metal, Metalcore, etc., etc.) sound like a drum machine set at 500bpm but Gene always adds a little class to his playing and gives us, somehow, a real melody inside all that chaos. He's also a hell of a nice guy! I'd love to see a Gene Hoglan and Chris Adler master class!

I can't get over how completely normal Gene is. For a guy that's been at the highest level for as long as Gene you'd think he'd be at least a little full of himself. Nope. And, his speaking/communication skills are exceptional. Practically flawless. You can listen forever and never hear any 'ummm's or ahhhhh's. No idiotically overusing a word/phrase like 'know what I mean' or 'like'. No childish cursing. We should be calling him Professor or Doctor. He needs a title to separate him from us average folk.

These are what people who do lecturing/presentation techniques call "vocal pauses". Every language has their own versions, some worse than others (some Japanese people can do vocal pauses per sentence word). They are considered poor discourse, much like excessive cursing. One way to get rid of them that's taught in lecture technique is practice a lecture/speech with a counter and literally count how many vocal pauses you do the entire presentation. People usually are not aware of those pauses when they speak.

That's a good start as well, just try playing the hi hat with your left hand, too! The real deal is to cross your arms, though, like you normally do. It's really strange and you're gonna laugh your ass off at how uncoordinated it sounds at first :D
@dzarren
@dzarren 6 жыл бұрын
That is admirable. Try going through your favourite books totally left handed, becomes natural at some point and your right handed drumming improves drastically without direct practice. I wanted something similar but didn’t have the room, so I just have one kit that is symmetrical and has every element of the kit on both sides. The hardest thing for me is getting used to stepping on a hi hat with the right foot and coordinating that with the hands.

Most people forget that Gene actually came up with the beat that Lars did in One first. Well, atleast released a recorded version of it. He did it on a song called Darkness Descends that was released in 1986. Lars and Metallica just made that beat more prominent by doing an open palm muted riff behind it. If you think about it, One actually hugely inspired all the metal we hear today where the riffs and double bass patterns align. I guess for that simple reason is why Gene wasn’t recognized for it, or simply because Metallica was the bigger band. Either way, Gene is a legend of a drummer. I first became aware of him when I heard the song Love by SYL. I remember going holy shit. His work in testament is great as well. Great drummer. Great video.

Had to go look up isolated drum tracks from love right after the sample and talk about it! I did recognize it from the sample and it makes total sense. Happened to listen to Devin Townsend's podcast the other day where Devin praised Gene so much. Gene Hoglan is such an inspiration as a person. Super exciting even as a guitarist to follow the mindset of playing drums. Doesn't hurt to understand drummers a bit better.

Wonderful to see a highly professional and successful drummer who kept his childish joy and excitement for playing the drums and music while doing it completely his own way. A drumming Parzival.

Amazing insight to the world of metal drumming, coming from a master no less. Gene's ambidexterity, power, versatility and creativity will forever remain a vital portion of the history of drumming. And to think he realized his ambidexterity through an accident. I had a similar experience. When I started having back pain while playing, I looked at a video of my band's performance. My left shoulder tucked into the ground it was so low! From then on I decided that all my hi-hat playing would be left-leading. It has since evolved into a style of open-handed drumming that allows me greater freedom, comfort and made my playing a lot tighter. Great interview, Ash, Gene!

I’m a beginner drummer and there are so many AMAZING topics in this interview I can learn from, holy cats! I’m into athletics so much discussion about diet, kinesiology, ergonomics, ankle weights, sleep, etc...WOW! Right down Broadway for me. 🤠 My favorite part was energy economics. I tend to flail my arms around bc I thought that’s what hard rock drummers do but to see a heavy metal drummer say he limits showy flailing to bring the highest level of motion and energy efficiency to his time behind the kit. A wonderful Teacher has been telling me the same thing for a long time....maybe I better start listening to her, she was right! Just never thought it looked “cool” unless you are flailing wildly behind the kit but this man just put that thought to bed. Thank you for an AWESOME video, you guys ROCK! Now back to kicking on 1 & 3 and snare on 2 & 4 and maybe someday I’ll be touring stadiums. 🤘😝🤘

I think one of the first songs I heard with Gene on it was Gone Forever by Daemon. That blew me away and still does to this day. Bought that album later on only to find out it was jampacked with Gene's awesome drumming. Great sounding kit where you can just hear him hit the shit out of that thing.

YEAH! Gene played on the monumental "Individual Thought Patterns" with Chuck and Steve DiGiorgio. That was in 1993, I was 14 and ripped the frets out to go speed-metal with fretless, hehe. Great to hear from you, thanks for the music!!!

I bought myself an alesis kit along with double kick peddle. Been playing guitar for 23 years. Over that period I've had some time behind the kit but just messing around but now I've played 5 to 6 hours each day over the past 3 days playing along to chimaira, killswitch engage, I'll nino, trivium, caliban, death and a bit of slayer. The progression has been unreal. After playing chimaira and slayer going to killswitch is hard because the tempo is much slower. Anyway I just wanted to say that when gene talked about his toes, that immediately caught my attention as I noticed that was happening to me today. I thought my technique was messed up until gene mentioned that. Thank you for the great video. Gene you are a beast. Been following you for many many years. My favourite drummer. The stuff you did with chuck (RIP) is unreal.

In my mind, there’s drumming; and then there’s “Gene Hoglaning”. Those who can Gene Hoglan are no mere mortal drummers, but a different breed entirely. Love your work Gene and the entire Drumeo team, inspiring drummers of all walks in many different genres and styles for years now. Absolutely awesome \m/
