I grew up with Gene in the early 80's when he dated my older sister. He used to come over and play my cheap $200 drumset and crack my cymbals with 1B drumsticks. He got me into all the good local bands including Great White, Dokken, Metallica, Slayer etc... I used to go see him when he was in Dark Angel and remember him starting out with a Tama set. He was a huge influence on me back then and now. I remember him always being sober and he was also a good pitcher and 1st baseman in junior high. Pretty cool to see him now on YT.

jeffrey jones Actually its because I use proper technique. Not a caveman who has to strong arm everything because unlike you, I dont have one dimensional dynamics lol. I still use my Pearl Session from 1994 & the tone I get from the toms are huge. They sound like mountains being played. Every show I get to use them, which means local because I can't bring them when touring Europe, Canada the West Coast etc., obviously. When recording they are again so massive they add weight to notes within a riff. Live locally, again the comments are always positive. Other drummers who ask to use them, same thing. Kick drums are boomy like cannons going off. I only use the Aquarian heads that have that very light strip of foam. I like them nice & open. I've been using the brass Pearl free-floater as well since its has to be since mid 2000s? It cuts through, but doesn't give that overwhelming ring I have heard from other companies. Sabian as well. My ride is from 1990. With all the smoke, grime & sweat it has a unique sound to it I'll never stray from. My crashes, china, hats are all Sabian. They're the only ones I have ever used & ever will. You don't marry a super model only to cheat with Bette Midler, know what I'm saying?
@kowboy83ra2 жыл бұрын
I feel the same way about the Pearl Eliminator pedals. I bought them brand new on my birthday in 2003, after trying out the Tama, DW, and Yamaha top models, and the Pearl was just like butter and blew them all away. I've used the same pedal for 19 years, thousands of gigs, hundreds of thousands of hours of practice. Never let me down. Never broke a spring. Threw them around. Never cleaned em. Never greased em. Abused and mistreated and still play like the first day I bought em. Obviously there's been a lot of technological advancements and new brands that have came out since 2003, so I recently bought the Trick pedals to try out without testing them first (no one keeps them in stock in the music stores). If they don't turn out like I plan, I'll just sell them. I will never part with my Pearl pedals though, even if I do like the Tricks. That Pearl is just indestructible. It's made me a lot of money and paid for all of my equipment 100 times over.

For me this big dude as he called himself is one of the greatest drummers out there and thanks Gene ! No triggers! I’m not really keen on triggers either but in today’s extreme metal , it seems that certain techniques cannot be really useful without those devices . Gene makes everything so simple that's absurd to see how difficult is to okay like he does....... I really need to buy his DVD! I actually would love to ask him what's the best technique to be fast but accurate and to make blast - beats sounding hard without triggers? You know, like old school, Steve Asheim, Mitch Harris, Pete " Comando" Sandoval and those guys.

@BoxUpMyBones6 жыл бұрын
Bond dude that would be amazing! He’s a great dude and super creative on the kit!
@drewzie79816 жыл бұрын
Considering how versatile Travis is on the kit, I'm still kinda shocked they haven't organised a lesson with him (I understand that both Drumeo and Travis are pretty busy but it would be amazing to see it happen)
@BoxUpMyBones6 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Travis’s setup is mind-blowing, and the fact that he plays thin crashes with those huge sticks without destroying them is pretty impressive! He also makes me want to play double hats so badly, but I can’t seem to commit to that with my setup given that I like my ride right above the kick, and I tend to punch the right hats if I play that ride, and I don’t like putting that ride to the right of the floor tom either (I play a 24 on the right and 18” ride on the left). Maybe a remote hat will do well in the future if money allows lol
@drewzie79816 жыл бұрын
That's how he started using twin hats, he started with a Mangini style hat system (x hats) where the left foot opened and closed the right and vice versa. *Only reason why I suggested having Travis on was because Gene does the same thing as Travis with his cymbals, low on the left and high on the right.*
