I had the flashing SECURITY light for the first and only time in the life of the car after some emission troubleshooting (OBDII problem not pollution) by a pro shop on a 2000 Saturn SL1. It took three 10 min cycles for mine to reverse course. FYI I also had a dead battery the day after the emission test.

This happened because there's a voltage spike or bones within the ignition lock cylinder, which confuses the body control, module or computer causing this problem.

Rey, No, it does not crank the engine over at all at first. If you read my description above, you will see that the battery went bad. This procedure was done after the battery was replaced. Just about anytime the BCM loses battery voltage, it will need to have this relearn procedure done. Does that make sense?

Everytime my battery dies (04' Venture) I have to recalibrate the power sliding passenger doors to operate again. I've never had to do this. The BCM should have an EEPROM chip you'd think.

Hi, Keep in mind there are more components to the security system than just the ignition switch. Instrument cluster (on come cars) computer (PCM or security module) and even the wiring could be an issue. Your best bet would be to check the computer for codes and check the wiring going to the ignition switch. It is also possible that the ignition switch itself is bad and will need to be replaced. If this is the case, then a relearn procedure will not work.

Recently the horn on my 1997 Chevy Conversion Van G1500 started to blare non-stop and I wasn't even in the vehicle. The horn would not stop blaring until I unhooked my battery. This relearn procedure did work on a 97 Cavalier I replaced the ignition switch on. What about Ford? If I replace the ignition lock cylinder on a 1997 Ford Explorer that is NOT equipped with chip inside of key, will the vehicle do the same thing as a GM? Does Ford have their own relearn procedure? Again this vehicle does NOT have a key with smart-chip. I read somewhere that the vehicle will need to be driven so many miles to relearn, but did not find anywhere about a Ford not starting. Is this only applicable to GM vehicles?

I Have a chevy impala 2001 I have replaced starter alternator battery and had a new transmission out in earlier this year. I also had a new crank sensor put on aswell and still can't seem to find the issue with my car not turning over and cranking. I was told so many things by auto mechanics and now it seems I need a BCM which is the module under the steering wheel if/when I replace the module will my car not cranking up stop and work properly....If you have any advice please feel respond

I have a '94 Cadillac Deville, do you think tht this procedure will work on it. It will not crank. When I put the key in it says starting disabled. Take the key out and it says wait 3 minutes. Do tht and it goes back to saying starting disabled. Can you help?

Hardmon, No, this procedure will not work for your vehicle. Your security system is set up different. This no crank condition on your Cadillac is most likely caused by broken wires coming off the ignition lock cylinder. This is very common. These wires go from the ignition lock cylinder to the theft module. They are supposed to carry the resistance of the pellet on the ignition key to the theft module. Over time, these two small little wires break coming off the ignition lock cylinder preventing the engine from starting. If you want the test to check these wires using an ohmmeter, just let me know. However, the fix is to replace the ignition lock cylinder (it comes with two new wires that run down the column). Once a new ignition lock cylinder is installed, the theft module will see the same resistance as before (because your using the same ignition key) so there is no "relearn" procedure required. On this vehicle, the only relearn that is needed is if the theft module is replaced. Good luck!

Hmmm... my truck's Security light is on solid (not blinking) and won't go off no matter how long I leave the ignition on. The engine starts then immediately dies. Just started this behavior the other morning out of the blue to my dismay! I'm trying to reach the wiring harness under the steering column cover right now to check for any oxidation. Need some explanation why some Security lights blink and others stay on solid. Mine is GMC 2000 dually truck (old body style as they say). No fault codes are being recorded. Also I've changed battery in my truck many times and never needed to let the Passlock system relearn the key... I'd think that key code would be stored in NRAM (non-volatile RAM, aka memory that doesn't need external power to retain whats stored in it). Some explanation is needed here also!

Yes, later that same day 7 months ago. Getting to the connector was the hard part, once I got the steering column clam shell bottom and top parts off I simply unplugged and re-plugged it 2 or 3 times put the clam shell and ignition lock back together (I had to remove the key lock in order to get the top clam shell off the column) and it hasn't given me a problem again since. I'm of the opinion that the connector not having been moved in some 16 years since original assembly had slightly oxidized contacts and thus wasn't making an electrical connection to the sensor anymore... unplugging and replugging it a time or two wiped off the oxidation. I shudder to think what a dealership would have charged me! - Michael

+jeremy32100 Good question. The directions from GM say to cycle the key on for 10 minutes 3 times in a row. Real world experience, we would only need to do it once to successfully start the vehicle.

I installed it an immeatiately the anti theft light came on when I turned the key on. Tried to start the car an it started for about 2 seconds an than died. The following are the steps I took to fix this problem. 1.Turn the ignition key on. 2. With the key in the on position, I removed the battery cable from the negative terminal an waited some 10 minutes. (this clears out any trouble codes) 3. Remove the key from the ignition. 4. Hi, i learned and tried something yesterday that blow me away. I couldn't get mine to do the reset and became desperate to get it started. In the end, turning on my left blinker after turning the key to run, waited about 5 seconds, and then it started up. Try that!

Could the ignition switch be my problem? I used the fob to unlock the car ,when I opened the door I had no power at all. We put a new battery in the car and tried to start it. The only power in the car was the check engine light and external vent light was on. so I tried to reset the relearn procedure and still nothing. So I am at a loss as to where I should start trouble shooting this problem. I plan on checking the grounds tomorrow but from what I've read and watched it seems like the ignition switch is the problem. What do you think?

I do believe your vehicle uses a different type of security system. If your ignition key has a resister pellet in it, then this is going to be a different set up. Although it would not hurt to try the relearn procedure on your vehicle, I dont think it will work. The fix for your security system is to replace the ignition lock cylinder (comes with the wiring that usually breaks inside the steering column) or even the Body Control module. You might want to get it scanned for codes as there may be a stored code in the PCM or BCM related to the ignition system. Good luck!

William M. Willard Have you checked your fuel pressure regulator? When the diaphragm ruptures it will bleed more fuel thru the system than it needs and flood the engine. I was told by a mechanic my 2003 Silverado Truck needed a Fuel Pump for 1500 bucks and I searched the internet and found this 10 dollar fix. It should be mounted on your fuel rail on the intake manifold. Remove the vacuum hose and see if it has fuel inside to confirm it has a bad diaphragm!

i see yours is blinking in the video but mine is much faster, almost like an over load or something? I have seen it bkink slower before but now its blinking very fast and making a weird noise...the display is also saying check fluids, check disc, low tire pressure etc and nlne of that was there when the light was solid or blinking slowly, only when its in this super fast mode do the warnings come up.

Dave Wilton I believe there is a video that shows you how to resolder the resistor pins for the RCDLR light module. The connection become overheated and lose connection and the lights dim and sometimes disappear. There should 5 to seven resistors all side by side on the back of the circuit board.

YES, this relearn procedure should work for this vehicle as well. To do this, turn the key to the crank position, then release it to run and let the car sit for 11 minutes with the key on. After 11 minutes, turn the key all the way off and wait 15 seconds (be sure that the key is turned off). Then turn the key to crank again and let it back to run and do another 11-minute wait. This procedure may need to be repeated 3-4 times before the engine will start again. Good luck!

This 01 monte of mine is, and has been a pain in the back side for electrical problems.. This is a pain in the --winter time, freezing my butt off, never had wiring nor electrical issues with my old '75 monte... Pull the 10 amp CLUS/BCM fuse on the left fuse center ... Reinsert, might take a couple of times, this is said to a remedy to waiting. And... Your car sounds like crap!!!

Also remember If you do leave the ignition key in the prestart position as you suggest the starter relay is probably getting red hot especially after 11min`s. This could burn up relays. not a good example.

The starter relay only activates when the key is in the CRANK position. There is no current going through the starter relay with the key "RUN or ON" position. You can leave the key in the "ON" position all day long and the starter relay will not be affected.

Yes sir that's correct. GM uses different types of security systems. Depending on the system you have will determine how it is wired and how it acts up when the security system kicks in. I recently been having this same problem after removing the battery for a couple hours.When i replaced the battery i tripped the the security system some how and the security light would flash like in your video.Well i got the security light to stop flashing by using the key in the doors.Now my problem is even though the security like isnt flashing i am still having a no crank issue. The car acts the way it did when the security light was flashing but without the light flashing now..Im really at my wits end..Ive talked to so many people and im starting to lose it..Could you possibly give me any other suggestions on why this frigin car wont crank..Its a 2001 buick lesabre , thanks.

Clarification on the first 25 Seconds, please (the camera move away from your hand and Ign Switch position) . Correct what I have wrong, please. - You put the key in "Acc' position. - then held it over to "Start". - fuel gauge went buried, then you released and it went back to "Acc". - then did procedure. Again, please correct what I have wrong.

Maryanna Berryman YES, this fixed my issue.. as in this allowed my vehicle to start. Keep in mind, there was nothing wrong with my ignition lock cylinder or security system. I had just installed a new battery and the security system needed to be "learned". This may work for a bit if the ignition lock cylinder is starting to go bad. However, in the end, the ignition lock cylinder may have to be replaced.

Help Why is it that the hazzard lights for SERVICE ENGINE, OIL and Battery symbol lights on display dash as well as my SECURITY light stay on and is solid/not blinking, nor does it turn off agter 10+ minutes. I can start car but when I drive it it starts to stall or does not respond to giving gas and goes to a crawl or dies. Yours does have oil or battery hazzard light on.

By turning the key on for 10 minutes, the computer will re-learn the Passlock sensor value which may fix the issue. However, if the problem continues even after doing the 10 minute relearn, you need to replace the ignition lock cylinder housing with the Passlock sensor built in. ok, so after watching 10 minutes of you silently fiddling with you key you didn't confirm anything about how to do this procedure. Once the light goes out do I turn the key to off then start? Or do I just go straight to start? Or does it even matter. "I bet it'll start" really didn't show me anything.

Hi Chaz, YES! For me this was a permanent fix because I just replaced my battery. There is nothing wrong with the ignition switch, passlock sensor or security system. However, You could have an issue with the security system which causes you to do this on a regular basis. If this is the case, then the root cause needs to be diagnosed and fixed. My experience has been that 9 times out of 10 this is caused by a bad passlock sensor inside the ignition switch.

Chevy doesn’t even have a fix for it! I just have to wait 10 min or something 20 after the first 10 mins if it doesn’t start. Once it starts the car runs great.
