I have been on the upswing of recovery for 10 months now. I can tell you right now that this video is spot on. I battled this for 9 years, always searching for the solution. Finally, once I landed on my 4 therapist and completed a 2 week intensive outpatient program at a local facility, I started to realize that is was the searching that was the problem. This disorder is very much like OCD, in that your obsession comes up and you compulsively try to fix it (googling, reading forums, ruminating, obsessively checking to see if its still there, entertaining "what if" thoughts, etc). Alot of OCD involves physical compulsions (locking door 3 times, etc.) but there is a whole other side to it...MENTAL COMPULSIONS. In a nutshell, the compulsion is anything you do in response to your obsession coming up. ANYTHING! Mental compulsions are where I spent most of my time. Arguing with myself, repetitive/stuck thoughts, always trying to "figure it out".The answer truly is learning to let go and not particularly care. Easier said than done, admittedly. I struggled with this one for a long time. In the end, the thing that worked for me was mindfulness. You HAVE to learn how to disengage from those thought. PERIOD. There is no other answer. I essentially let the thoughts come anytime, but dont entertain them any further than that. They pop up, I immediately go back to what I was doing. For example, If I'm driving a car, I move my attention to what my hands feel like on the steering wheel. If I'm in the shower, I shift attention to what the soap smells like, the water feels/sounds like, etc. At the beginning, it will probably be a constant struggle to continuously move your attention to the present. It will feel fake. You will question yourself and the strategy you are employing. That is just the OCD (doubting disease) at work...trying to get you to try and "figure it out" in your head again. I promise you, there is nothing to figure out. For anyone struggling with this, if any of this resonates with you or sounds like your experience, I urge you to find a qualified therapist that SPECIALIZES in OCD/Anxiety. Its very important to understand what you are doing to keep enabling this disorder. What compulsions are you doing to try and get rid of it. I was surprised at everything I was doing, although they weren't obvious at the time. In the meantime, start learning about mindfulness. Also, I would suggest trying to start a meditation practice to learn the basics of mindfulness, and then try to let it bleed over into your everyday life, not just your daily (10 min) practice. For those interested, I would highly recommend the app: Waking Up (meditation app) by Sam Harris.

That's the most important work. Once you start to feel safe, you will be able to accept. Once you do that, you'll see that DP/DR though unpleasant is not really harmful. Slowly, you'll stop caring about DP/DR, that's when you actually will stop checking in. Because you'll see that your attention has moved on to something else.

I developed derealization after a bad experience with weed about a year ago. I use to freak out from the second I woke up to the second I went to bed. Lately, I’m still in recovery but, I have come such a long way! I’d like to bring up ADHD and derealization. Not being on my medication at the moment creates a feeling of being “spaced out” and it’s hard to differ the symptoms. However, I am excited about life again! I have a recovery plan. I run everyday for as long as I can, which gives me a good endorphin boost. I also take CBD oil/tea, eat healthy, and I am going to watch your meditations everyday and see where things go ❤️

I’m here for my younger sibling and I’m searching everywhere to be exact on what exactly it is, it’s like they’re living in a dream they didn’t wake up from and their imagination is getting stronger where they actually feel it and they see themself sitting beside them like an imaginary friend communicate and feel them and they tell me if they are crazy and I keep comforting them even though I know it could cause problems if it continues on but I can only do so much and I’m not a professional although I read and search these stuff a lot but it’s not the same thing. So I’ll try with making them maybe practice a sport or yoga and I’ll practice with them and go out as much as we can so it’s not suffocating and eat more health and keeping busy maybe even by silly stuff we like and I’ll keep doing my best and look for a professional that could actually help...

In this period I feel strongly dissociated (derealization). It all started for me in an instant and it's as if I see the world from a completely different perspective, I don't even remember how I was living so peacefully a second after it started, or if my brain had turned off a switch and I had immersed myself in this new prospect. As for the mirror thing, it gets better over time. Don't shy away from mirrors, tell yourself "Its ok to feel disconnected, but I am still myself" As for quarantine, though it's a challenging time, it's also the best time to learn something new or invest in improving yourself. You shouldn't think like this. Life is a process. You can't simply get back to your old self without any memories of DPDR. Can you get back to when you were seven years old again? No! When you recover, you will no longer be afraid of the symptoms. You will no longer experience them. But your life will change, most likely for the better.

Hi Swamy, your videos help me a lot but I have a doubt ... every time I am at leisure with my family, totally happy, my DR increases a lot! I even get a blurred vision ... Shouldn't my brain be more relaxed? Or does he force this increase to remain in "safe mode"? I can not understand...

You just gotta try to get your mind off of what your thinking about. Don't think of how what your feeling is bad and its scaring you. Personally I find doing something physically helps he alot faster. Like try just doing something squats or whatever is easy for you and focus on the good and just try to have a good time

Can dpdr cause ur brain to speak for you I know I can read and speak but after getting dpdr I've felt like I don't know what words mean but when I calm down I easily can. I'm new and worried just need advice I've only had weed and lsd I would always panic while having weed that's why I think it's caused by it I would Over think things like why do we do things When I took lsd I just realized I was bad and need to change my life for like a month I felt good I had a good ego and did self care and cared more abt others and things. But 1 day I woke up and thought i ruined my brain from the drugs and started getting rlly scared i hate drugs now I've stopped just looking for guidance. Ty I only have autism and that's it I'm 14 I only used for about 2months and did low dosage lsd twice all same year weed was like 3 4 days a week in my room was happy then it will go down to panicking then go back up I think I'm fine cause it's not alot of drugs and didn't do them for long I just need help to recover tyy

Hello guys, i've been suffering from dp/dr for 5 months. Sometimes it hits me so hard sometimes it mild and i'm kinda getting used to it. But i have a question to those who suffer from it or have any information if someome can help me please.. yesterday i drank coffee which is something i dont usually because we all know it makes anxiety worse.. but i drank it anyway because my dp/dr wasnt so bad. Eventually i got really anxious but i knew it was from the coffee so after coming home i just rested and the nervousness just went away.. plus i got really mad when i came home and i was so stressed because of something.. at night everything got worse... i would be sitting there but feeling soo weird and so spaced out.. as if this person is absolutely not me.. ive experienced that before but it was so severe... memories of my childhood started to hit me out of nowhere which usually happens like 2 times a day but yesterday it was crazy.. every minute my mind would bring out an old memory and hit me with it.. the memory doesnt have to be something traumas its just a normal memory. Is that normal? I know that recovering from dp/dr has its setbacks but i suddenly feel afraid of doing anything today because of this feeling.. could it be the coffee affecting me? I read that coffee stays in your system for only 6 hours but i woke up today with the same feeling. My dp/dr is so so bad. I was feeling better for a week then after drinking that coffee and getting into a fight with my mom i felt suddenly so weird and crazy. Please if someome can explain
