Great vid. One thing I've appreciated more and more is that proper gain reduction is not normally the number on a compressor's GR, but instead the range between peak GR and least GR, normally reduced by increasing the release. Love the quadtracking tip.

Nice! Nice! I liked this video a lot. Btw... Do you have any suggestions on how to make my sax sound smooth, soft and smoky? I always have a hard time making sax sound good. From the recording to the EQ. Just can't get it to sound the way it sounds in my head. Or maybe it's just a skill issue with whoever is playing the sax in the first place? 🥲

Glad you enjoyed it! I think for a smooth sax sound, you have to get the right microphone. Try out a few and decide which sounds best. Condensers are what I’d first go for (maybe Lewitt or Neumann), but Sm7b can be very smooth so try that as well. Definitely not an Sm57 for a smooth sound. Make sure you’re tracking in a booth or a room with non-reflective surfaces like a carpeted room with couches. Tracking in a room with wood floors would less smooth, and definitely don’t track in a garage with cement floors.

You could apply an ir to the sax you just have to find the right one
