They say we’re saturated and people miss the old stacked cards but if you think about it, the UFC still puts on the same amount of absolutely stacked cards each year as they did in years past. One super stacked card every three months is about the same now as it was then.

Got to number 2 and yeesh. I’m out. Never thought I’d see the day that a monopoly position held by a multinational, greedy company like the UFC would be celebrated. I’m no ONE shill but there’s a reason Japanese/Chinese/Burmese etc fighters don’t want to come to UFC, they get treated better and paid better there. The UFC’s anti-union, anti-fair fighter pay, anti-healthcare for their “used up and spat out” fighters is disgusting and a big reason why I don’t watch it anymore, and the way they continue to mistreat their fighters is ONLY possible because they are the only show in town.
@misocriallo4379
@misocriallo4379 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm with you. It's disgusting to me. But I'm still going to watch UFC. Because the product is great. The fighters are going to get mistreated until they find a sense of unity and grow the stones to turn down wack deals as individuals and a collective. But yes, ONE is the shit. The true spirit of martial arts is more readily apparent. And there social media is freaking PURE GOLD. Plus, I can't feed my MMA addiction with just one promotion. That's why I've really gotten into PFL, ONE, KSW (they also take really good care of their fighter$), Rizin (same)...tbh, I feel like a lot of fighters are thirsty to take a shit contract with UFC just because they know it has a chokehold on the Western market and people just want to be famous and the erroneous casual PERCEPTION is that if you aren't a UFC fighter, you're second-rate. But yeah, Cage Warriors, CFFC, LFA, all the so-called "feeder" regional leagues, I like to watch to see who is on the come up before they even hit DWCS. Speaking of, I'm looking forward to PFL's new Challenger Series on FuboTV beginning this month on the 18th 👍🏼 Hell, I just this week caught wind of Ares Fighting out of France, a new frontier for MMA promotions. Also very interested in UAE Warriors: Africa event coming up soon.

I will say this though. As a fan, the UFC can not treat their HW champ the way Dana dissed Ngannou AND jack up PPV prices $5 annually AND think that a card with anything less than two or three title fights AND all top contender h2h bouts on the main card will get my money. Masvidal-Covington to headline 272???? FOH. Looks like I won't be buying shit until 274 in Brazil. Been waiting to see Jiri Prochazka in action since he sent Dom Reyes to the ether last May. Basically, I can just wait two wks and watch the PPVs for free and on demand with my ESPN+ subscription. Endeavor will wake up one day and realize that Dana White needs to GO.

Trivia: "Lay-n-pray" was originally coined by Stephen Quadros in early Pride FC days, and its original meaning was slightly inverse to what it has become: it originally referred to the fighter on bottom laying on his back, holding on tight and praying for a stand-up by the referee.

#3 got me. I started training in the early 2000's. I wouldn't tell my employers or my girlfriend's family what I did at first. Eventually I had to answer for some black eyes at work. They accepted it but still treated me as if I were some sort of madman afterwards. My gf's family seemed to tiptoe around me after they found out, as if I was some sort of bronze age barbarian, which, come to think of it, would be pretty cool. Overall it came off okay, but I'm glad I didn't lead with it. It's pretty amazing how differently it was viewed back then; definitely lost some of it's cool when it went mainstream, but overall, things are much better now. Okay #1 is the best. I had to rent the damn things, hopefully as soon as they hit blockbuster, but still nowhere near the event. In fact, the first time I had anything resembling an MMA fight was after some friends and I rented UFC #1 at my friends house who was a big kung fu guy. Sh*t talking happened, and by the time the video was over, we went down in the basement to square off with the closest size guy, except for the 1 or 2 p*ssies who wouldn't fight. I stunned my buddy with a right hand and made him submit from mount with a bar arm choke. I think I seen it in the event so I tried it. My buddy hit me at the same time and cracked my tooth. We had no mouth pieces and kung fu knuckle protectors, probably for bag work. The Kung Fu guy kicked the brawlers ass. He did some kind of three touch kick that looked like Chun Li from Street Fighter. He really was good at practical kung fu, but admitted that any sort of grappling would probably f*ck him up. I knew I would always love this sport from the first night I saw it and attempted to experience a simulation of it.

The old days of searching every mom and pop video store. Hunting for the newest VHS tape of fights. And you would have to wait a month till it came out. And if your even lucky enough to have cable back then. Watching it live on PPV was hard. Only a certain few cable companies had it. And of course none of those were in my area of California. So all you had was the tapes.

Martial arts used to be a "mythological secret". Only rich guys who've (claimed to have) been to exotic sounding countries knew it's secrets. Phoneys were considered legit kungfu masters after just 2 weeks holiday trips abroad. Anyone who doubted that was collectively considered as "just a brute who didn't understand true martial arts", and often treated as an outcast. I mean, who can forget the whole Frank Dux and Bloodsport debacle, which took almost 2 decades to unravel? Now those same masters are called geeks and skinny wierdos with long ponytail. They're laughed at. No respect whatsoever, even from their peers. MMA, internet and smartphones had made martial art gossips and rumours verifiable; with burden on proof on the pretender. Thank god for this.

Also, no. 9 is not really real: we still get moneyfights, and some fights just because, not because they are the best, and are up to face the champ. Especially with UFC's contract bullying, they just let top contenders fight on prelims and otherwise leave people on the sideline. Joanna Jędrzejczyk and Jon Jones haven't fought since early 2020. Also also, the whole being mainstream isn't always that good, since PPV is just insane at 75 dollars. We in The Netherlands had it good for a year or 2. We had a channel called Veronica(use to be illegal radio, now it's also a tv channel) that had the rights, and streamed the main card, and when you watched it back by event or separate video's, you could maybe find some fights form the undercard jammed in. And all for free. But now they don't have the rights anymore. Just saying that no-one pays that high a price for PPV.

#10 is most definitely still a problem (for me) and it’s funny because I was able to talk more about mma years back because of transcending stars like Brock Lesnar and Kimbo Slice. I know there are stars of the same magnitude now but with there being so much more to look at than just one or two guys it makes it harder for someone who doesn’t follow mma that much to keep up. Plus talking about mma with today’s casual and even hardcore fans is just a pain. Too many biased opinions and false narratives created about certain fighters that usually prevent me from having decent conversations with others.

Been an mma fan since back when the ufc events where not yet numbered in the double digits. I often look back at the ‘wildwest’ Era of, no weight classes and single disciplined fighters, with rose colour glasses. That being said the “lay and pray” aspect was one of the most problematic issues as far as trying to sell the sport to new audiences. I remember getting hyped for a certain match and then being incredibly disappointed with the complete lack of action during the 30 minute/no rounds, format of some of the early fights.

This is kinda crazy, as a huge fan of MMA and Joji, I've felt the whole "I can't share this interest with others" thing about both and seeing the clip from his Slow Dancing in the Dark video did something weird in my brain. Idk what compelled me to leave this comment but yeah. As always, love the video and keep up the great work

Very interesting at UFC 217 (GSP vs Bisping), at msg an usher was telling our section how he felt what we were watching was fake like pro wrestling. You never saw a group of people unite and tell him otherwise, and to shut up, luckily his manager moved him away

Funny thing was I was doing an earlier version off mma by doing valetudo after boxing 10 years then muay thai for 6 years. So needless to say I never really learned grappling of real jujitsu. The Tudo guys would meet with matter Mendez from 8pm to 11 after the young ones finished there karate lessons. All 8 of us would go in this back room learn a technique or two then fight round Robin style with no weight classes. I was like 19 0r 20. Stayed until I was 23 but didn't realize the natural ability I had and now kick myself for not keeping with it. I would have been pretty decent with some wrestling and jujitsu classes mixed in there. Smh missed opportunities. Plus I had a tough city life that back in those days would have given me a shot no question. Lesson to anyone doing what they love... NEVER. EVER. GIVE UP. THAT'S THE ONLY TRUE FAILURE IN LIFE.

I dunno man, I’d say UFC has been accepted as a sport for at least 20 years. Even in in the late 90’s people were starting to come around. Granted, it was still quite niche and not particularly popular, but it’s been a LONG time since it was considered “human cockfighting”. I’ve been watching since 04’ and it wasn’t a dirty little secret back then.

It’s hilarious how boxing, where guys die in the ring every year & beat eachother into Parkinson’s, that has the most corrupt judging of any non-Olympic sport, and who’s fighters are only willing to go agains MMA guys where they have all the advantages, think they have any right to hold their nose up about any other combat sport at all.

Small story about the first point - I was working in a welding shop in Canada. Everyone here has a huge boner for hockey, I watch MMA. One night we were all in the lunch room and someone asked me if I watched sports. I said not really but I watch MMA.... I was immediately treated like I thought I was some tough guy douche bag because I watch MMA. And I'm like, so you watch hockey does that mean you believe you're Sidney Crosby? No? ...

Great story man. I thought hockey fans liked "fights". I guess only when both guys are on skates, wearing helmets and grabbing collars. Btw, I'm a Penguins fan. Used to pretend I was Jaromir Jagr but I never pretended to be Urijiah Faber. You can blame the assholes in Tapout shirts for the misperception of MMA fans. Tbh, that is one thing of several that kept me from even giving MMA a real look as a fan. I've just been a huge fan of the four major North American sports my whole life. Soccer wasn't even on my radar until 2010. But when the pandemic hit and everything else shut down for several months and the UFC was back in 6 weeks, I got an ESPN+ subscription and went all in. I don't train, I don't think I'm Barney Badass. I just enjoy the skilled violence. Especially now that hockey is basically just dudes figure skating with sticks and the NFL has become two-hand touch.
