Yeah, I hate when writers try to add more "depth" to a female character by making her a prostitute or some sort of sex worker in the past. It's like they can't think of anything else except that. And the whole Wolverine hitting on a minor thing is disgusting. He may have a teenagers body however, his mind was that of an adult. It wasn't cute and it made the hero into some type of dude who Chris Hansen would ask to take a seat.

To be fair, originally he was supposed to be a teenager, or at least look like one. Chris Claremont imagined him as a bisexual (A lot of Claremont's characters were queer as originally intended, and it was an open secret. Hell, for a long time, "mutant" in non-Marvel works was a way to say "Oh, this dude likes other dudes." Exhibit A, Teen Titans' Jericho.) teenager with a chip on his shoulder. Later writers decided to give him a crap ton of children, apparently taking a cue from Batman. (Also the overexposure.) So you start seeing characters like Daken. Like, Marvel really mocked themselves here in Marville, with Wolverine being the first human.

Wolvie is like 400 years old, finding a girl in his age group is more than a little tricky. Also, they don't do that to add depth to a character. The characters already have depth. They make them prostitutes to add tragedy to them.

In the ultimate Spider-Man show, they did an homage to this I think. There was a body swap episode between Spidey and Wolverine and in that one Wolverine kept calling her “Red” and pinned her against a wall at some point, to which MJ responded with wtf is wrong with you😂

So as usual, the Cyclops/Frost one needs some out of universe context. Joe Quesada, who ran the show at the time, was a die-hard Cyclops fan. But during Grant Morrison's run, he was going through a messy divorce with his red-headed wife IRL. It was later found he had a mistress... who was a platinum blonde. You can't make this shit up. "Here Comes Tomorrow", Morrison's final story, was modified to have Cyclops and Frost get together, when Morrison's original vision would have Jean come back from the dead sooner. The modification to the story ordered by... Quesada. Morrison quit Marvel over this.

Since no other comment has mentioned it yet, the Leather Boy/Monkey Joe plotline in GLA had multiple levels of satire involved that must have gone missed by the list maker (who may not have read the actual story before making said list). 1. In Squirrel Girl's first appearance, she and Monkey Joe defeated Doctor Doom. When Monkey Joe is killed, the reader initially is led to believe that this is Doctor Doom coming back to avenge his previous humiliation. 2. The GLA miniseries came out shortly after the Mark Waid/Mike Wieringo story arc in Fantastic Four where Doctor Doom wears a leather suit and mask instead of body armor. So Doctor Doom being unmasked as a disguised Leather Boy is supposed to be a punchline at the expense of that FF storyline. 3. Most importantly, the defiling and murder of Monkey Joe was Dan Slott's way of parodying the way Sue Digby's defiling and murder was handled in the pages of Identity Crisis. Besides the "unnatural acts," Flatman reveals during the autopsy that Monkey Joe was burned alive and had a footprint on his brain (Men's Size 12), just like Sue Digby. To drive the point home, when Leather Boy is unmasked from his Doctor Doom disguise, his real name is announced as Gene Lorrene, an obvious word play on Sue Digby's murderer in Identity Crisis, Jean Loring. Long story short, Dan Slott's intention wasn't to be inappropriate. He was using his humor series to comment on how the story arc in Identity Crisis was inappropriate. You specifically get this commentary when Squirrel Girl reacts to the news of the "unnatural acts." She says "What?! That's SICK! Who would do that? And put it in a comic book?! Who'd wanna read about somebody dying...LIKE THAT?!"

I disagree about Sue in the Fantastic Four. The point of that whole thing was to make her come out of it realizing how strong she was and changing her name finally to The Invisible Woman instead of Girl (after 20 years!). The criticisms of that storyline are small in comparison with the good that came from it. It's reaching for things people might be bothered by.

I mean, rape is disturbing alone but it's disturbing that the writer went 'This is what gays do.' Absolutely abhorrent and outdated even then. And I'm a BIG advocate of leaving material in it's historical context without edits, so we can judge and learn from the past. I don't believe in changing history. But this would be one of the candidates if I wanted to. I still wouldn't as we need to learn from things like this that people were casually homophobic and we need to understand why the gay community might have reason to be afraid to be 'out', even in a world that now accepts that, in the main.

No, is was the Darkhold that turned her into the Scarlet Witch. Her lost children was just the crux it used to make her do its bidding. Its pretty clear in Dr Strange 2 that she doesn't even really believe the reasoning as she refuses to look at the logic of the situation and how little it takes to break the "hold" the book has over her at the end. If she had control and was not under the corrupt influence of the book she could easily just create the kids again just as she does with the fake version of herself and where she is living.

You do the Nightcrawler storyline a disservice: The bad guys trying to install him as Pope (via holographic disguise, not shapeshifting) was the least stupidly-impossible part of their plot. Leaving out that elevating Kurt through the ranks to get him in position for _consideration_ would take decades (at best), their plan was to make Kurt the Pope, having him appear during a big Mass ceremony (Easter or Passover, I forget which), then simultaneously simulate the Rapture (Which isn't a part of Catholic dogma) by disintegrating people with tricked out communion wafers AND have Kurt's image inducer fail, revealing him as a "demon" in disguise, which would set humanity against mutantkind (and not Catholicism). It was, in short, Captial-D DUMB.

She used a position of power of him to essentially have her way with him and he's still getting crap for it in and out of universe. I hated the early 2000s era of comics, everyone tried entirely too hard to be edgy. Grant Morrison tried to turn the X-Men into Doom Patrol. Mark Millar turned The Avengers into The Authority in Ultimates. Then once Marvel movies became box office hits, they started charging the comics to be more like the movies

Look at eternals movie alone. Or google how many female replacements in Flash alone. I bet over 15. They are more worried about agenda over stories. Or fans. Create new characters without screwing up a team by making them have to be part of it. The people you think you are going to get as new readers never do buy it. And you lose some.

I couldn't agree more. Virtue signalling in comics never gets new fans. It only ends in 'awards' being offered in various lobbies and gets a bit of 'positive' online press but actually those people who write those articles and offer awards don't actually read comics or most media because they're busy doing other things. In the meantime, I'll be dropping your comics and saving money over here.

DC makes Lois Lane black for one issue. Fans: I can't believe they thought that was Ok back then, what a fucked up time. Marvel makes The Punisher black for one story arc Fans: How in this day and age could they possibly think that was a good idea. Marvel makes Betsy Braddock asian in the 70's and doesn't change her back until just a couple years ago. Fans: Put her back, put her back. There was nothing wrong with that.

Honestly that Iron Man story is good. I think it has a strong, typical marvel turnabout. I think everybody was ready for Scott to move on from Jean for christsake; also White Queen's had a lot of character development, if not clothes. That Wolverine/Spider-man, Mary Jane planned it thing... very yuck The brutal way comics fumble race stuff over and over must really dissappoint minority fans
