Don’t agree about Get Out! The fact that it was NOT the police to arrest him in that scene was one of the best and most surprising twists ever!! Because of the themes of the movie you expect to be the police, you expect the bleak end and he being founded guilt for the murders! The fact that this didn’t happen was genius! So unexpected! I love it!

@@alastorcorvusyes but isn’t black man gets unjustly arrested old by now? It’s cliche in itself at this point. In fact it’s what is expected and had that been the ending it would’ve been a let down. Even if your argument is it makes you think (it doesn’t cause it’s been over done by now) that doesn’t automatically make a movie better. The ending it got was by far the better ending, otherwise it would’ve been too on the nose and another “oh black man can’t escape the perils of his skin color” trope. It’s actually ridiculous that it was added to a list like this

I agree with you. We got all the heartbreaking anticipation of the very predictable and unjust arrest of Chris but relief when we find out that it's all going to be alright. I could probably argue that the alternate ending would have been a stronger indictment of the system that we've been creating in this country, but a) implying that ending gets you most of that benefit, b) I prefer the twist to the predictable ending, and c) I appreciated a little bit of justice in a milieu so fraught with injustice. Now, I am a middle-aged straight white man, so take whatever grains of salt go with that, but I do like the theatrical ending so much better.

@@kylerogers6811 I think there's an argument to be made that letting us all see the flashing lights and draw the expected conclusion and then subverting that with the twist is a better way to make people think. I think the darker ending is just too predictable to have the impact that the twist does. We see the darker ending so often in the real world that we become numb to it. I think the twist ending is the more poignant for that.

I’m old enough to have watched the butterfly effect in the cinema, the dark ending was the UK version I saw and the one where he walks down there street was the American version. Having family in Chicago we argued over the phone about the films ending for weeks because they didn’t understand why we didn’t like it and we didn’t understand why they liked it. This was pre modern internet. The director wanted the dark ending and the studio wouldn’t sign off on it so he shot both. It was one of the first films to try this tactic out to suit different tastes in audiences. Now in modern day the newest Spider-Man into the whatever verse has 7 different version not to offend anyone in different countries.

In the alternate ending of "The Butterfly Effect" you highlighted, our hero returns to himself in the womb at the moment of his birth in order to kill himself by causing his own miscarriage. During that scene, an even darker ending is hinted at, as his mother screams "No, not again, not again..." This suggested a very bleak plot element, with previous children having been born to these parents, lived out their own lives with the same ability along alternate timelines, and finding out for themselves that in order to save everyone they encountered, they had to kill themselves in utero.

In the directors cut of the movie there is an extra scene where his Mom tells him that she had already been pregnant twice before Evan, and both babies died in the womb. That’s why she calls Evan her miracle baby, or something like that.

I love The Butterfly Effect. I think its a great movie. I fucking hate this alternate ending so bad. It throw's out every set up rule in the movie just for a 'shocker' ending. The whole point of his power is he HAS to read his own journals. Just like his father HAD TO look at the photographs. They set up Rules, Cause, Effect. Then throw it away on a dumb ending. The Theatrical ending is far more fitting as he realizes that he only destroys what he touched, so he distances himself from the things he truly cares about. He's forever a watcher in the life of someone he nearly killed himself to fix.

No, it's a good thing that alternate ending to Get Out wasn't used, because too many critics already think the film is about general racial inequality and injustice. The film is overwhelmingly explicit that it is about *progressive whites who love black people so much they fetishize them.* It's about how the extreme antiracists are no better than racists, and how neither group see blacks as equal human beings. The previous ending would have been lapped up by the 'blame everyone but us' crowd.

I agree. If we didn't live in a world where this happens all too frequently, then it might makes sense to go in the darker direction. Since we do see that kind of injustice so frequently, I think it's a stronger statement to set up that darker ending and then subvert it. The darker ending wouldn't have been as memorable or generated as much attention.

I disagree re: Black Widow. While the scene you highlight could have been put in the credits, as Marvel always does have a mid- credit sequence, the accrual ending, I found very sad. We know, though Nat and her family do not, that she's headed to her heroic death and will never see them again. I actually teared up.

Adding “get out” to a list like this is proof that there needs to be more black people at Whatculture. Having the “black man faces unjust consequences due to his skin” is SOOOOO overdone. I think Key as a black man could see that too. In fact isn’t it cliche at this point? When we see black people and cops in a movie we expect the worst outcome cause we expect the director to use that as a social commentary… again 🙄. Look no further than another Daniel Kaluuya movie in queen and slim. They got confronted by cops and of course were shot unarmed and that movie became largely forgettable. Too cliche. The fact we still talk about get out and not queen and slim should show you how memorable each ending landed. But the reason I say they need more black people on their staff is cause the host understood the ending in fatal attraction served no justice to the man and left the woman as character trope/unjustly guilty. She as a woman understood why it was better to have an ending that sees the man face consequences and the woman not spit out as another character trope. As a woman the host also acknowledged that the ending to black widow would’ve been iconic and inspirational to girls watching it. However, there was no black person in the room to help her understand “black guy goes to jail unjustly” AGAIN is NOT the “much better ending”. It is another overdone character trope. She and the writers on this vid failed to realize the effect it’d have on black people watching. They admit lil girls watching would be inspired by black widow and that’s better but didn’t think about what black people watching get out would take from the ending. Seeing the black man beat racism and escape for once was the perfect ending. It was unexpected, wasn’t cliche, and was still thought provoking enough because of the cop car alone. Having his homie pull up in a cop car already primed our minds for what’s about to happen. To not have that happen and instead take a different route was a relief but we still thought bout what could’ve happened cause the cop car alone was symbolic enough. Honestly it’s INSANE that get out in on this list. A) just cause a movie ending makes you think bout society doesn’t make it automatically better. B) that ending wouldn’t have actually made anyone think cause it’d be the saaaaame thing every other black vs racism movie has done. We’ve all seen it before and another ending like that would’ve just looked phoned in for cheap white critic praise. Hire more black people Whatculture so you get more accurate lists.

I disagree with only a couple of these. Terminator 2 still just goes back to the which theory do you subscribe. If they actually stopped judgement day, then that means they created a new reality. Or they end up in a continuous loop. If you go back and stop Judgement day then it never happens so you won't send yourself back in time to stop it. But if you don't send someone back in time then no one is there to stop it so that means judgement day will happen, etc, etc, etc. I'm glad they didn't end Freddy and kept him going. No, the sequels were not as good as the 1st one but they were still good. And Get Out would not have been better with the other ending. The point was driven home. Anything else would have just been overkill.
@kylerogers6811
@kylerogers6811 6 ай бұрын
I second that point bout get out. How could the overdone trope of “black man gets unjustly prosecuted” be the ‘better’ ending. Lol but she didn’t think “jealous white woman in love is crazy” was a better ending for fatal attraction. As a white woman she understood that fatal attractions ending spat out an overused character trope but then argued the black man’s recycled trope is a better ending lol gtfo

Chris getting arrested would NOT have been a better ending! It would have been the EXPECTED ending. That's the ending "White People" would like. Absolutely not. That’s over done, and completely cliche at this point. Black people facing unjust prosecution is soooo overdone since The Color Purple lol. Idk how you people still enjoy it and haven’t seen it as cliche. Besides the way Key did it was perfect. You still see the cop car so we all thought it. We all expected that outcome. Had it actually followed through it would’ve been the most “yeah of course” ending. The fact we all expected it would’ve left the movie falling flat. But the way Key teased it, got our expectations set and then revealed a twist was MUCH better. Yes it was more refreshing to have a new take but also it still allowed us to think bout society cause the cop car was already symbolic enough. Best example: look at Queen and Slim another Daniel Kaluuya movie. Critics and audiences agreed it was a great movie till the end. They were shot unarmed by cops. It was foreseeable and completely expected. As a result look at what movie gets talked bout more and which one doesn’t. The one with the cliche ending vs the one with an unexpected ending

The Butterfly Effect ending in the womb wouldnt have fit with the rest of the movie. Journals or home movies of his younger self were required to cause the flashbacks. Theres no way, his womb-baby self would have had a journal or video camera in there. Just accept that he loved his friends too much to see them suffer. Even at his own gain.

No, that small girl ending for Black Widow wouldn't have worked. She should just hava a Jason Borne like treatment and take on missions for her motherland (sniper kills) only to realise she's been working for corrupt bureaucrats, and she punches their noses into a bloody pulp before deflecting to the US. Scarlett Johansson's talent and a strong script would've made that work. Instead we get the PC nanny's version of this cinematic vomit.
