I'm with the content creator here. $311K is peanuts compared to Manhatten, Brooklyn, Honolulu, and San Francisco (in that order). Manhatten is averaging almost a $2 million dollar median HOME price. That makes Augusta roughly FIVE times cheaper than the U.S. most expensive areas, and it still has the same basic amenities and then some.
@Wiseblood2012
@Wiseblood2012 Жыл бұрын
I reckon it's the city part that makes it expensive. In Alabama, there was a property with 200 acres a pool, and I want to say a 16 thousand square foot house. That's 16 thousand. If memory serves, it was 3.1 million or 3.6 million furnished. So if neighbors aren't your thing and you like long drives rural living, is much cheaper.

We moved to Youngstown OH from Jacksonville FL in 2017, primarily to be close to family, but also for the seasons, the proximity to great parks and forests, and the affordable housing. We were blown away by the low cost of living. Everything is cheaper here--food, utilities, fuel...and although the winters can seem long, they are relatively mild. We bought an older but well built 70 year old home in 2017 for $78,000. We sold in 2021 and bought a new construction home with more square footage in a nearby suburb for $179,000. There are many affordable homes here, both new and old--I think the main barrier to entry is the insane interest rates.

Just over the border from youngstown in Pa, you can buy houses for 30-50k. Not glamorous houses but good if you're poor. Granted these areas are kinda go nowhere places but if you're looking to live off your social security alone, they're do-able.

I live in Louisiana and it is very affordable. The downside is the HOT summer days. Mississippi is no better on heat and humidity. Arkansas is breathtaking! If a person desires a lot of land for a reasonable price, he/she could travel to Northern Arkansas. By the way, not every place is like New Orleans or Baton Rouge. I live in a very small town with very little crime. If someone has trouble, the entire town pulls together to help.

I live in Lafayette area and its a wonderful place overall. Lots of friendly people, amazing food, great culture. Houses are still attainable in the 150-250k range and I got a starter home that only needed a new roof and otherwise extremely low maintenance. No repairs were even needed. 7 minute commute to work, gigabit internet, 60k job with benefits, and 100k in savings. It has been a pretty sweet deal if you can deal with some of Louisianas downsides

Half of Arkansas is beautiful. The part of the State east of Crowley ridge is table top flat and about as interesting. West of Crowley Ridge it is indeed beautiful in the Ozark region. Little Rock is out in the middle of nowhere with long drives to any metro area. It also has a horrible public education system. It’s also pretty high on crime and there’s still a lot of the old Southern issues with race. As for Youngstown. It’s not as bad as in the 70’s when you could have had your head up your butt and it would smell better than Youngstown. Those $150,000 homes are mostly going to be in the ghetto areas of Youngstown. In the Youngstown suburbs you’re going to pay about the average housing cost for Ohio, which is still very good.

Cool, but I also care about these things: *1.* Property taxes *2.* HOA fees (preferably none) *3.* Crime rate *4.* Susceptibility to natural disasters *5.* Distance to nearest stores/supermarkets/restaurants/cafes/parks/schools/hospitals (How long would I have to travel to go to the store or to go to work?) *6.* Availability of public transportation I’m thinking a cozy small town would be better than something that’s too remote. I would really love to find a house with a rooftop, so I can go up there at night to watch the stars. It is my dream.

I live in a small town in northern Michigan. My house is close to 1300 Sq. Ft. The mortgage payment is $521.00 a month. Bought it in 2012. 3 bedroom, one bath, large office, open concept kitchen and living room, with vaulted ceilings, on 1 acre of land. Hubby and I live very comfortable here. $300,000 is quite steep. Most people live on a budget these days, so I don’t think your suggestions are reasonable.

It's not just the cost of the house, it's the property taxes you will never be able to avoid. It doesn't matter if you save up enough to reduce the cost of the house down to an affordable mortgage if the property taxes are high no matter what and never go away ever. A few hundred dollars a year for a $60,000 house is doable, but with an average property reaching 300 grand, the property tax is ridiculous.

Augusta University Health - the ER is ok, but outdated, and their billing department is absolute nighmare that is Kafka-esque to say the least. The areas near downtown are full of run-down or abandoned homes.South Augusta has crime issues and is strip-mall hell. There is a stinky paper plant that belches toxins into the air every Sunday night. Downtown businesses are struggling so badly outside of Master's week that most restaurants are only open for dinner Thursday-Saturday. The military folk normally keep close to Fort Gordon and many don't venture to downtown. If they want excitement - they got to Atlanta or Columbia. Public transportation has limited hours of operation and limited routes outside of the city center. I don't recommend it if you don't have a car. The positives - a fairly moderate climate (except the summers can be brutal) and the people for the most part are friendly and welcoming to outsiders due to the city's income relying on the Master's and it being a big military hub.

Good video ma’am. You did a lot of great research! Thankyou! I just wanted to say that first. I guess cheap is in the eye of the beholder though haha. My homestead is in the price ranges your giving which is considered alot here in my area, and many folks can’t afford it. $300,000 is serious privilege to the average blue collar family. Cheap is like $100,000 and under. In fact our cheap starter homes in the surrounding areas are $50,000-$70,000 here in the frozen tundra. I’m guessing primarily because of the long harsh winters and the fact you have to drive to any destination. Also wages are stagnant and stuck thoroughly a decade or two behind and professional jobs are limited and only come available after someone retires haha. Even peace and quiet in a traditional rural area has its challenges. God Bless.

Tennessee. Everything seems to be cheaper there. I was shocked how cheap things are. Gas at the pump also. No state income tax. Low property tax. Nashville is more pricy and avoid crime ridden Memphis. I’m also looking at a little place also near Macon GA going for less than $150k. Nicely remodeled and updated…abt 1000 sq ft on just over half an acre. Low crime. It’s abt an hour and a half from Atlanta but Macon is also a good sized city with a small commercial airport. Adjoining semi rural/small town areas…not too shabby. If my kid winds up in Jersey then I’ll know where to go at least when it’s time for grandkids. 😅😅Scranton sounds lovely. But that being said, I def have found a lot more affordable homes just by being open to looking in various locations and not being dead set on just one area.

The most affordable cities in the United States are also the most dangerous cities in such a country most likely due to poverty. Poor people will want to commit crimes because they feel it’s the only way for them to survive. In affordable cities, it’s rather easy to find the money to buy things, so criminals will ask for money from just about anyone and take advantage of others by doing such a thing and probably easily get away with it! In an overpriced city, you can’t get the money to buy whatever you need in order to live if you’re poor (or broke for that matter), so criminals would suffer what they might think of as a life-threatening punishment for crime in that type of city!

Youngstown, OH is not a bad place to live now, as the polluting steel industry had collapsed in the '70s; of course, this is the prime reason why it is so inexpensive.

Can we add Lafayette LA to this list? Thinking about moving there from MA because of the cost of living and better crime stats then the rest of State. Thanks

I got friends move out of California and while not all returned there's a good amount who did. Despite the horrible politics it's just an amazing place to live as long as it's away from LA or San Francisco

You really do not know shyt. California is one of the worst places to live. You can't even dig a water well in the middle of nowhere, trying to live off gird. They make you use a licensed water well guy, who charges you $30,000 to drill the well, and then they have to put a GPS locater on the well, so later a CA government man can come and meter your water and make you pay for the water you used. That is ONE example and the more you know, the worst you realize CA is. THE CALIFORNIA DREAM IS DEAD! For fun, here is another... collecting rainwater for landscaping purposes would require a license. If a rain capture system is being used to create a water supply (swimming pool, hot tub, fountains, ponds), a landscaper must be authorized to enter a prime contract for that system. They tax you on everything. That is why big businesses are leaving. Smog. Traffic. Homeless. Stealing. Crime. Place is a shyt hole.

Jackie i am a new sub. You did a great job on this video. Im a midwesterner who moved to Mexico city. But we lived in Mcallen before we came here. To me the border is the best place in Texas. I think you have 2 camps people who can live in the cold and those who can't or won't but people who do sure can get better bargains in housing

You act like everyone makes $300,000 a year. Most people are lucky to make $60,000 a year and then they still got to take care of their family by their food pay for gas pay for utilities well it must be nice to be in that $300,000 average a year so yeah you could say it was affordable BS

Western New York State is really underappreciated. The snow is always mentioned, but it isn't that big of a deal. The insufferable heat in much of the south is a bigger problem, but people keep moving there.

No, Kansas City, MO is not cheap at all unless you live in a less than desirable neighborhood that often has blighted houses and higher crime rates. Any nicer area of the metro area is going to have housing prices of at least $275K-375K at a minimum, most likely in Clay or Platte counties.
