Tbh, the rock pigeon (regular city pigeon) is beautiful as well, but is not seen that way because of how common they are. It is a similar case with the Passenger Pigeon, which no one thought much of because it used to be one of the most abundant birds in the world. Now, they are extinct.

Pigeons are intelligent creatures with a highly developed emotional capability and it is very wrong to subject them (or any animal) to the cruelty and inherent danger of dove releases. The birds are driven miles away from their homes and forced to fly all of the way back. Their colouring makes them an easy target for hawks, many of them succumb to thirst, starvation and exhaustion and die slowly and terrified and alone. At least 10% are not expected to make it home.

It all comes from the human's misunderstanding about them. They don't carry more disease than normal pets do and they won't pass anything to u. Actually they r very clever, semi tame and clean birds. If there is water, they will bath themselves at least once every day, probably more than a lot of human being.

The first photo shown as a representative of the Victorian Crowned Pigeon is actually a different but related species: the Western Crowned Pigeon (Goura cristata). Western Crowned Pigeons have no white tipping on their crest feathers and a blue-grey rather than wine-purple breast. Also, just after mentioning the genus Ptilinopus you showed a photo of a Superb Fruit Dove (Ptilinopus superbus), not a Rose-crowned Fruit Dove. Note the bright orange neck patch and black "cummerbund".
