Did the rebellion win because of their skill and bravery or was it just the empire's lack of competence, especially in its officer corp?

puting Piett on the list is kind of unfair as he has proven himself to be more than capable of commanding larger vessels. As far as i know he didnt position the Executor over the death star, rather it was a direct order von Palpatine. So Piett had noch choice but to let his fleet stay passive the entire battle, so that palpatine could slowly destroy the rebel fleet with his new toy.

Han Solo knew a smugglers trick knowing there's a buffer zone between a SSD's Hull and Minimum Sensor Range, so he did a flyby and quickly landed on the ship. Neda thought that the Falcon had jumped into Hyperspace. Not really his fault as he probably wasn't aware of the technical details of his own ship. Nitpick on Piett's supposedly foolish action: he had moved the Executor, and the entire fleet, closer to the second Death Star because the Rebel cruisers were firing on the defenseless battlestation and tearing it apart (see the novelization). The only order Piett could have given was to put his fleet between the Rebels and the Death Star to force them to defend themselves against his fleet, even if that meant putting the Executor where the entire Rebel fleet could fire on his ship (as they promptly did, taking down the bridge shields and allowing the A-Wing to ram the bridge). Ackbar, being the superior commander, had put him in a situation where he could only choose between two bad things, either letting the Rebels fire on the incomplete and unshielded Death Star, meaning they'd destroy it anyway in short order, or using his ships as shields, putting said ships in extreme danger but giving him a chance to save the station.
@ladygrey7425
@ladygrey7425 Жыл бұрын
I love the novelization. It really gives a bigger sense of scale. Pretty much THOUSANDS of ships and HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of fighters on both sides slugging it out in a last desperate battle to determine who was going to rule/lead from then on. GR-75s being loaded up with explosives and sent on auto-collision courses with Star Destroyers. The Rebels were really throwing EVERYTHING they had to destroy Palpatine once and for all, while the Imperials were rushing all available resources to defend their sovereign.

@@Kitt_the_Katt Technically, from a purely strategic standpoint on this isolated moment of the battle, yes this is true; however, given the priorities of both the Rebels and the Imperials, a flanking maneuver would not have made sense. The Rebels were targeting the Death Star - that was their only goal in this assault. Given the choice between firing on the Death Star and firing on the Executor, the Rebel fleet (down to a pilot, I would be inclined to argue) would have fired on the Death Star. By staying close to the Death Star, Piett was denying the Rebels of this choice, forcing them to fire first on the Executor. Flanking the Rebel fleet (the smaller, faster, more maneuverable fleet) gives them the choice to fire upon the Death Star. As for the Imperial position, the Executor was the flagship of the entire Imperial Navy, meaning that (aside from the Death Star of course) it should have been protected at all costs. A flanking maneuver might have allowed the flagship to outlast the Death Star, but it also would have left it isolated from the rest of the Imperial fleet, and would have been easily destroyed by the remnants of the Rebel fleet. Additionally, a flagship as cumbersome and massive as the Executor would have been very difficult to maneuver quickly enough to pull off a successful flanking maneuver. Piett chose to sacrifice the Executor to give the Death Star its best chance at survival.

There are two ways to survive working directly under Vader. 1) Show no fear. Just respect. Occasionally offer an objective point of veiw to him when discussing a mission or task. He'll respect you, may even see you as potential command material. 2) Whatever role you have within the Empire, do your best work with it. If you specialise in Boarding Operations then plan, strategise and strike. Research, use the best men and lead by example.

Ozzel fell into the category of 'Glory Hound'. Every bad decision he made (during his time in the Republic and Imperial) was down to him wanting to score a huge, glorious victory for himself to make him look good to his superiors. But he was an idiot. His agenda at Hoth (coming out of Hyperspace close to the planet) was to put the fear into the Rebels (or smugglers as he insisted it was when the probe reported back) his refusal to acknowledge that it was a rebel base and not a smugglers hide out put it in his mind that they wouldn't have a shield, which they did and could raise it in seconds. That's why Vader killed him. He fucked up in pursuit of his own glory and not trusting Vader's instinct.

I would disagree with Piett being on this list. Yes, he did technically move the fleet to engage the Rebel fleet, however I would point out he was under strict orders to prevent the Rebel fleet from escaping by the emperor using any and all means. Even looking back to some novelizations and even The Empire Strikes Back, Piett was far more competent than Kendel Ozell and other officers. Vader actually personally singled Piett out to join Death Squadron. And even after the failure of Bespin Piett was basically left still among the living whereas other officers for slightly lesser failures were outright killed even if it wasn't their fault. The novel surrounding the failure of Bespin when the Falcon escaped also made it clear Piett was fully expecting to be killed for his failure, but the fact he wasn't he figured that Vader's mind was elsewhere at that moment and if he were to interrupt those thoughts, he would certainly be dead. He even made it a point to approach Vader with respect and never with fear or in Ozell's case ignorance and smug. Piett had seen what that lead to and knew Vader was a force to be reckoned with, but like Piett himself Vader hated the general incompetence and corruption that was pervasive throughout the empire and many officers. Sharing this and the fact he was loyal to Vader and to Palpatine also made it clear he was still a reasonably competent admiral of Death Squadron and Vader knew this and had left Piett alive after Bespin.

Given how fast the competency of Officers dropped off a cliff after the Clone Wars ended and the Empire rose it is easy to blame the Empire for these terrible officers however it is likely many of them were already serving the Republic durring the Clone Wars and were simply kept in check by "good" influences like the Clones and Jedi. However after the drastic shift of Order 66 and the near rapid replacement of the Clones drastically changed the "work culture" of the military. Clones would look out for each other as they saw themselves as brothers and the Jedi were taught to be paragons of good. While the Empire was made up of normal people who had no such connections and their training even reinforced the idea that they can only count on themselves. This way of thinking pretty much infected the entire millitary to the point where many officers only have had the success they do through social manipulation and deception, without needing to be actually capable at their jobs, they just needed a higher up to THINK they were good Officers and get promotions through that. After thinking about it the thing that really crippled the Empire was a combination of Tarkins Doctrine and what the "culture" inside the Empire was like leading to incompetent Officers being everywhere. Which come to think of it the infighting was what eventually killed the Sith, funny how history repeats and yet Palpatine couldn't see it comming.
@ladygrey7425
@ladygrey7425 Жыл бұрын
Because Palpatine was so self absorbed in his quest for apotheosis that everything else was a distant second for him. The worst fear of the Sith wasn't the Jedi. It was their own winding mortality and the loss of their identity to the Force.

Tarkin thought that they were a waste of time, and he didn't like them. He only used them because the Emperor commanded him to use other strategies than his own (in effect).
@ladygrey7425

The AT-AT was, in all respects, pretty good at it's role of being an armed and armored siege tower, taking out enemy defenses while allowing the troops inside to safely disembark and engage with the disoriented enemy at close range. It's when you're trying to use it for maneuver warfare that it's really out of it's element compared to repulsorlift, treaded, or wheeled AFVs which are much more fast and agile.

The AT-TE had several glaring glaring weaknesses such as the primary weapon system being incredibly exposed, the fixed cannons offer more limited fields of fire, and the crew is incredibly exposed. The reality is that the assault on the primary Rebel stronghold sees the loss of two walkers. One from the harpoon and one from a lightsaber driven breach. The second one was essentially just incredibly bad luck. Considering the empire crushed the defenses, I think the AT-AT design was vindicated

My guess is that since Lothal was the most backwater of the backwater, with a low population and little industry. It was a cushy posting with little threat barring like six rebels for the entire planet. Like with Denmark to the Nazis in WW2, it was not under threat so the officers there could rise up the ranks with no military experience and little that would test their competence. The officers on Lothal could coast along by being bullies. The Empire only turned their attention to the planet when one of the Rebels turned out to be a Jedi, and that the planet could be a gateway for time travel.

Yogar Lyste was adaptable, suffering less from general incompetence than he did simply inexperience. He showed some degree of initiative in learning from the shortcomings of others. From the list of superiors he had regular contact with, it’s worth noting that he sought mentorship to some degree from Kallus over the likes of Pryce, Titus or Constantine, and that his efforts during the Leia Debacle had given a Jedi and his apprentice and the daughter of the Chosen One to all collectively have second thoughts about the operation until THE FORCE ITSELF intervened by guiding them to the answer of their problems… a man who just so happened to have worked on a key component of Lyste’s security precautions. In spite of the failure he suffered in that incident, Lyste’s career appeared to have been on an upward trajectory bringing him in direct command of Admiral Thrawn while Constantine’s command was reduced and Titus was effectively exiled from the Lothal theater of operations to first oversee a scrapping station and later to babysit a bunch of communications relays. But in the end, his trust in Kallus was taken advantage, his naïveté in the realm of counter-espionage techniques was his undoing in the face of one of the ISB’s finest turned traitor.

Honestly, I'd take Major Staz, Grand Moff Tarkin, Lieutenant Lyste, and Admiral Piett off the Incompetency List. Staz was the kind of officer who fought alongside his men rather than command from the safety of his command post, Tarkin's tactical genius was actually frightening when he wasn't hamstrung by Palpatine (not to mention, he successfully hunted down and defeated Darth Vader on the Sith's request by using his surroundings to his advantage, even if he almost got Force-choked immediately afterwards), Lyste did everything by the book and took every necessary precaution, and Piett was a great strategist and tactician who was forced to place his fleet between the Rebel warships and the incomplete second Death Star because Admiral Ackbar was a much more brilliant strategist.

In defence of Admiral Piett, he was terrified of making a mistake. hearing "You have failed me for the last time", or "Apology accepted" would indicate a bad time on Vader's ship. Also, the Emperor ordered him to that position over the death star.
@lordfrostwind3151
@lordfrostwind3151 Жыл бұрын
I can forgive Piett slightly, while he was operating too close to the Death Star, I think they were scrambling at that point, after all without the shield the station was painfully vulnerable and the fleet was positioned in entirely the wrong place to form a defensive perimeter, so they had to full burn their engines trying to get between the rebels and the Death Star, not to mention in all likelihood they were probably trying to evacuate some of the VIPs on board, specifically the Emperor. Now where his big mistake I believe was his complete failure taking initiative at Endor, as soon as the rebel fleet started gunning towards the star destroyers they should have opened up with everything they had, you know in the direction and range all the big turbo lasers operate best at. Instead still following the Emperor's orders he waited until they were in knife fighting distance where they nor the Death Star could operate effectively. Also guessing the helicopter, possibly Life Flight or whatever your equivalent is. Used to love near a hospital heard those going CONSTANTLY.
@TheL4W
@TheL4W Жыл бұрын
and even that was not his fault. the death Star needed a pretty big corridor to pick the rebel ships with the superlaser. and the ISDs DID fire back on their operating range until Lando and Ackbar decided to fly into knife combat range, as you call it. Remember, the fleet was under orders not to attack. Had they have done I have no doubt the rebel fleet and fighter core would have been wiped out. But that was the Emperor, not Piett's fault. Emperor wanted to show off his new toy. Had Peitt have ordered the fleet to withdraw, leading them into a tighter firing arc and giving the DS room to aim then the Rebels would have been wiped out. Calrissian's idea to advance on the Imp fleet and engage at point blank range was a good strategy.

A great deal of the incompetence was also due to the Emperor, himself. Almost without exception, such autocrats are consumed by their fear of losing power (as he reminded Anakin) and in general the most common threat is, well, Generals... and Admirals... and their subordinate officers; anyone with a more direct control of the military might of the regime. To a tyrannical Emperor it's all too possible for officers to be too intelligent, too competent, too capable... perhaps capable enough to be a threat. As a result, loyalty is heavily favored over skill, and in a dictatorship such loyalty usually comes with a lack of brains or excess of selfishness, both of which poisons the body of the regime's forces. There are the rare exceptions, of course, but their rarity prevents them from compensating for a system intentionally geared to keep the officer corps too incompetent to be a danger to their supreme leader.

Well, from I gathered from the imperial academy on Lothal from Star Wars Rebels, it’s no wonder. There recruits are taught 1. Actively undermine each other to get ahead 2 Cooperation is for the weak 3. Every man for themself

Given how big the Empire was, it makes sense how incompetent their officers can be, spread so thin with rigid policies meant to handle all situations. If one listens to military talk about how incompetent real officers can be, it's quite realistic of Star Wars.

To be honest, I always considered Piett to be quite competent so I was surprised to see him in the list. The way he decided to explain some failures to Vader presonaly... That was a guy who wasn't there just to be there and get a higher rank from it, but this was to me a presentation of care for his own crew. Which was actually nice to see. Many other officers we saw in the movies were just using their subordinates to follow their orders for whatever cost, grab the credit for the success and blame them for failures. Piett on the other hand was a commader worthy of trust from his subordinates. Which creates better, more motivated and in result more efficient crew.

I never thought Piett was a bad officer. He seemed efficient and at the Battle of Endor he was specifically following orders from the Emperor to keep the Rebel from escaping instead of outright killing them. That is why the A-Wing got through in the first place. I know you have probably drawn examples from books and comics...I don't have that knowledge but just from the movies he seemed capable enough.

Yep, he was just unlucky. He absolutely HAD to follow emperor's orders. If he didn't, even if his actions lead to victory he would probably be executed or discharged at least for ignoring EMPEROR'S orders. Also he was one of the few officers Vader actually valued

One thing I've always wondered is this: why do most humans in Star Wars have a British accent?
@timnorton7669
@timnorton7669 Жыл бұрын
From Legends: It's because the accent we know as 'British' is from the Coruscant upper crust. Human-like senators pick up the accent on accident from emersion, or on purpose for respect during their long stays in the planet city. Those senators, when visiting their home systems, commune with noble/important people there, who also in turn try to mimic their accent for prestige. Thus, various forms of 'British' become the standard accent of 'important' people across the galaxy. Also in turn, a lot of those people were put in charge of imperial training facilities, thus the accent was disseminated amongst the rank and file.

To be fair, Piett was on orders to put his ships where he did, and a man who achieved his position in the way Piett did would likely NOT want to take the chance of moving the ships to a more beneficial tactical position lest Vader, or god forbid the Emperor himself, take a less than favorable view of moving the ships.

Whoa, going to have to argue that Piett should not be here and in fact acted as best as he could given the positions he was put in. I also hate that in battlefront 2017, what's his name says "Piett you fool". Next to Veers, Piett is a solid leader. Everyone else on here is pretty much accurate lol

Ozzel appeared to be in the high position he was in due to connections, rather than skill. Some later comics made it so Piett and Vader both wanted him gone. My father, a physicist, pointed out that if Ozzel's plan were to work, not be on sensors and not worry about the ion cannon, he should have pulled put of light speed much closer to Hoth, though that would risk the asteroid field, ion cannon range and gravity well. Thatvway, he'd be in sensor and planetar defense blind spots. There are so many ways to argue one tactic or another that he said the correct answer was that it was a no-win situation for Ozzel; hom botching Vader's plan was the perfect excuse to get rid of him. Too far to be in effective blind spots and too close to avoid sensors.

I suspect that the first guy was due to how close it was to the end of the clone wars. Most units were commanded by jedi officers that led from the front, it may be that at that point in the story the empire hadn't developed a meaningful alternative to direct command oversight.

One of the short stories in From a Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi (Impact by Sean Williams), the bridge flight controller that we saw radioing the Millennium Falcon actually implemented a bridge system lockout a moment or two before the A-Wing impacted. This bridge lockout was a relatively new protocol designed to prevent mutineers from entering the bridge. This also locked out the CIC/secondary bridge from regaining control of the ship. The reason he did it was he previously had some rebellion sympathies as his grandmother (a Kuat System Engineer) was a rebel leader on Kuat who he thought was dead. But each of the A-Wings had her personal symbol painted on them. When he saw his grandmother’s symbol on the A-Wings, he knew she was alive and decided to rebel and activated the lockout. This helped lead to the destruction of the Executor.

Bolvan also had an imperial policy involving gunner accuracy records (basically, gunners had an accuracy quota, and it would be negatively affected if they shot the escape pod and they either missed or there turned out to be no reason to shoot it).

I'd argue that Aresko and Grint were fairly competent for the roles to which they were initially assigned, but dealing with a rebel cell led by a friggen Jedi was something no average Imperial officer could do and these two were almost the definition of 'average'.

I have to disagree with Piett. His deployment was per the Emperor's plan and his death was more due to the chance of battle. He also had enough sense not to lie to Vader.

Admiral Ozzell's call was a good one. Rebels already were evacuating (unbeknownst to him, but a reasonable assumption given the loss of the Probe Droid). Moreover Rebels were able to raise the shield even with the shorter warnign given by fleet dropping close to the planet - the only fault there seems to be lack of coordination witht he ground forces and Vader. In any case, dropping further away would give the Rebels more time to evacuate in peace, potentially removing the losses caused by blockade being close by. If anything it was Piett who afterwards failed with the blockade duty (partially). He got choked mostly for dissing Vader earlier.

If they had jumped behind the planet they could have enter the atmosphere from the other side of the planet. The rebels would have never raised the shield. They could have sent TIE Bombers to blow the generator and then just orbital bombard ECHO base
