You can't really compare athlets based on number of medals. In swimming you can earn quite a few in a same OG while if you are a sprinter you can't win all the other long distance events.

Totally agree with you... If swimming doesn't would've been in Olympics then in Tokyo 2020 (till the I'm writing this comment) USA would have only 18 medals instead of 44... If table tennis would've same medals as of swimming then Chinese sportsmens would've topped this list by 50+ gold...

no other swimmer has come anywhere close to phelps. so it must be that phelps is unusual. Also, you are ignoring the fact that in every one of those races, he had to beat other swimmers who only had one event to focus on. so in fact, you can "stack" medals between various disciplines.

So true. One example is multi-day events like sailing. To win more than one medal per Games, a sailor would have to compete in another sport whose timing didn't overlap that of their sailing event, as well as being a top athlete in those different sports. Not impossible, but extremely unlikely.
