Lexington is loaded with huge horse farms,and the kids who grow up there are definitely snobs and wrapped up in their little wealthy upbringing. We camped in the,State Park there, attended the horse shows there and went to some of the stores there. We say how bad they treated people who camped, who were not overdressed and who didn't meet up to their standards.........as we walked thru the barns,where shows,were held, they made negative comments about all of us........snobs at the highest level including their parents.

I've lived in a small town in Wisconsin for almost 3 years. I couldn't take it any longer. The worst thing that was said to me by a middle aged white lady ( I am a 60 something year old black lady) was that in Wisconsin, they call black people the N word. And she said the word! Another white lady told me they watch me as I shop for groceries! I'll never go back there. When I left I was actually afraid for my well being!!

My experience-as a black man, I experienced way more racism while living in Ohio (the direct, in-your-face hate and name calling), and living in Colorado (Denver.....the "subtle", kind of "pandering", back-handed, "you're so articulate for a POC....and good for YOU for owning a home and a car and working everyday"). Ugh. I was born and raised in WEST Texas and am currently back living in the state and I've yet to experience any of what I experienced in Colorado or Ohio.

I'm a white person and I live in Idaho, i can't say for the demographics of where you lived in Ohio or Colorado but here, there aren't many black people. Or anyone other than white or Hispanic. I sometimes think that in areas with low numbers of different races/ethnicities, people form biases that aren't challenged by meeting real members of those races/ethnicities. Therefore they're more likely to believe in and strengthen those biases which leads to a lot of people here making racist generalizing statements

But been in Nc 15 years and i see people giving me funny stares and had people call me racial slurs here cause I'm Puerto Rican and they don't like me and always calling me Mexican. I grew up on the West coast (California, Nevada, Oregon.) When I turned 18 in 2006, I joined the Army and got stationed at Fort Campbell, KY, on the border between Tennessee and Kentucky. Before I joined the Army I was pretty naïve and would have happily told most people that racism was overblown and was essentially non-existent in the US, with the exception of a few communities across the country. Let me tell you, I was WRONG. I'm a white guy. While stationed at Fort Campbell, I dated a black woman for a few years. About 95% of the time we would go out on dates, go for walks through a park, whatever, we would encounter blatant racism. White people would yell at me for being a traitor to my race and for being a "n****r lover." Black men would yell at her because she dared date a white man. Black women that she worked with would regularly drop racist comments about her dating me and shut her out of group get togethers after we attended one of her company functions together. We genuinely ran into racist remarks from all angles as an interracial couple DAILY in the South. We were together for about two years and it was rare for a day to pass without getting these comments one way or the other. Granted, this was from about 2007-2009, but I can assure you that racism is unfortunately alive and well in the South, and pretty much every other part of the US.

As an African American male originally from Ohio and having lived in the Deep South, I've come to realize that the perception of racism differs between regions. Contrary to popular belief, I've found that the South isn't inherently more racist than northern states. Instead, what I've observed is that racist individuals in the South tend to be more openly vocal about their prejudices compared to those in the North. Personally, I value transparency and honesty, even when it comes to difficult topics like racism. I'd rather someone be upfront about their beliefs rather than hiding them behind a facade of friendliness. In my experience, encountering individuals who openly express their racist views allows for a more genuine interaction, even if it may be uncomfortable. It's disheartening to discover someone's true colors only when faced with a challenging situation or when forced to make a choice. In essence, while racism exists in both the North and the South, the difference lies in the level of openness about it. I believe that addressing these issues openly and honestly is the first step towards fostering understanding and ultimately, overcoming racism.

My wife and I live in Texas. I don't see why people gripe about voter ID. You have to have an ID to write a check, drive a car, go to a doctor, and too many other things too many to list. I know many old people, I am one, I know many black friends. These are the two groups they say blocks voting. Everyone I know has some sort of ID. It's no big deal.

The problem with the voter ID is that Texas made it difficult for people without transportation to obtain one. The DPS was notorious for shutting down the driver's license office in minority areas. As for cashing a check, I never have to show an ID because the teller knows me. It should be the same for voting.

Im from South Korea. I experienced a racism in California. I thought that it was odd but that is the based in my experience. Then moved to Texas then currently, living in Arkansas. Everyone has been so nice and kind. Texas and Arkansas has been very great. I even go to Louisiana twice or three times a year, not experienced racism, either.

I'm Brazilian, with a mix of Italian and portuguese ancestry. My sister used to live in L.A (studying) and I went there to visit her. I went for a drink with some of her friends (mostly Italians), we were just having fun, not being loud or inappropriate in anyway. Then some blond girl told me to go back to my country...like, out of nowhere. This behavior was a bit shocking to me cuz when foreigners come to Brazil, people are so friendly, nice, hospitable, happy to help you even if they don't speak your language. Like, if someone is visiting your place, you wanna make sure they are having a good time, right? Crazy, I would never live in the US mostly because I don't feel welcome.

Racist people live everywhere. If they don't like you because of your skin color, you speak a non-english language or you're LGBT, then screw them. Just ignore them and enjoy everyone else.

I knew it, I knew it Alabama and Mississippi would be the top 2. As a black truck driver I've had problems in all the states on the list, but Mississippi and Alabama leads the list by far. I've owned my trucking company since 96, one state trooper in Mississippi just couldn't believe it. (this was in 2005) A couple small towns in Alabama the local sheriff told me I wasn't welcome in the town after dark. (2004 & 2008) That's just the tip of the iceberg I own 50 trucks now because of my experiences and the fact that most of my drivers are ethnic. I refuse to accept any loads to 6 of the states on your list in the last 20yrs. The one's I do are only the major cities, no small backwood towns. I know Kentucky would've been on the list but didn't make the top 10.

For the few people that don't have one, you can simply provide your social security number which everyone by law is required to have, or you can ask for a free ID from many states like Georgia.

I don't know fam. I lived in Sacramento for a short time and the whites and Hispanics there would call you the N word in a heartbeat. The racism on the job was crazy too. I’m a 68 yr. old female. I grew up in Louisville , Ky. Lots of racism there. We had riots in the streets. I went to a Catholic elementary school that was pretty evenly mixed. We kids got along well for the most part. It was the parents that caused the problems usually. I could have my white friends over to visit my house. Not my black friends. My mom wasn’t really a racist. She was so afraid my grandfather, if he had dropped by while a black friend was over, it would have been bad. Really bad. I remember thinking that I would be so happy when I grew up and racism would be gone and not have to worry about it. Oh, the innocence of children.

I am a college educated biracial Black man who has lived and traveled all over the world and the US. I have experienced the most racism in Pennsylvania (mostly everywhere outside of the Philadelphia area), South Central Kansas (Wichita area), Texas (worst was Collin County which is a part of the North Dallas suburbs), NYC/NJ and South Carolina. I also felt a lot of racism in Connecticut, Virginia, Colorado, Chicago area and Ohio.

I retired at 51 and moved from NY to North Carolina . Most of the seniors in my fanily had migrated from the south during the "Jim Crow" era ,and had no love . But I served in the military with a lot of southerners ,they werent the most well educated but they were knowledgeable, I learned how to hunt fish ,and fix my cheap ass car. I was crusing home doing 5 mph over the limit, one after noon from a golf game and a couple of guys in an jacked up pickup with glass pack mufflers started tail gateing and popping the muffler,the first time I let in go ,the second time I let it go, The third time I looked over my sholder,deliberately reached across my dash and popped opem glove box.They backed off and took the next right. I'm not saying they were racist,they might have just been assholes who happened to be white. I just know that in my almost 30 years of military and civialian law enforcement ,I learned that a 1911 platform with a double stack magizine tends to win disputes,what ever the motivation.

I'm from NY. Went to college for 2 years in Ohio where I discovered acute overt racists. Lived in California for 12 years. Same thing especially in L.A., the Bay Area and the Inland Empire. And California is where I faced ramped up harrassment from the cops and I've never experienced that anywhere else I've lived. But to be honest, I have lived and traveled all over this country and it's the same (everywhere) I've been...EVERYWHERE. On another topic, I used to work in the airline industry in NY and encountered quite a few racists from other countries but the worst were Austria, UK, Australia, Canada, and Turkey. Racism is a global pandemic, but imagine going to someone else's country and imposing that behavior on the natives. And as far as vacations to other countries, the worst racism I encountered was definitely in Mexico.

I’ve lived in SC most of my life and it’s changed a lot, especially over the last 20 years. Is there discrimination here? Absolutely but there is everywhere. It all depends on where you are and who you are around. Most people I run into are just normal people who are open minded. There are people, mainly in the older generations who are quite closed minded. That’s generally worse in the more impoverished areas of the state.

My home state of Pennsylvania has to be #11. They don’t call us “Pennsyltucky” for no reason. As a black truck driver, I’ve been all over this country. I’ve never really gotten that feel when I travel the southern states. The states I felt uncomfortable in were Indiana and West Virginia.

Philadelphia in the east, Pittsburgh in the west and Alabama up the middle. A few years ago a black family dared to move into Hanover, and were burned out of their house within a month I remember. I live about 15 miles south of the Mason-Dixon line, and know the attitudes of people up there. Rural Maryland is the same way, if you travel to the eastern shore or Frederick County and west, and you see the same thing, Trump flags everywhere.

Yep. Agreed. My mother was born in 1942 (still alive). She grew up in a rural area outside of Washington PA (which is outside of Pittsburg). She told me to my shock that Blk children were not allowed to go to kindergarten and started school in the 1st grade! There WAS kindergarten enrollment and attendance taking place at the school in her district, but Blk children were barred from attending kindergarten! Also, my sibling and I drive from the DMV area up route 15 to western NY (we grew up there) to visit our parents. About 2/3 of the trip is through PA. We are very “selective” on where we stop for gas and toilet-usually we stop at SHEETZ En route to NY. One time my sister flew out of the restroom 🚽 and said let’s go-- she was agitated! She was scared bec when she was swing her hands (at SHEETZ) two scin head chicks came in the restroom. Neither of us have traveled to paces like Alabama or Mississippi, but the part of PA that we drive through to go to NY, really makes me imagine that those Parts of PA are similar I ALA or to Miss.

I'm an eastern European girl who has had black girls in Missouri tell me off for oppressing their people and to stay away from their men (sorry ladies, but my people were too busy fighting off the Turks and Russians to have black slaves); and later when I was dating my Vietnamese boyfriend in southern California, his parents told me in no uncertain terms that I will never get married to him in the future because they want him to marry a good Vietnamese girl. Might be useful to distinguish between casual racism and institutional racism. As a white guy rowing up in NJ and spending many years living in Boston and its suburbs, I witnessed a shocking amount of racist attitudes. Interestingly, friends and acquaintances could be entirely civil and friendly with people of other races in a one-on-one situation, yet when out of these contexts would be casually racist toward these same groups. The worse problem is institutional racism wherein the local or state governments expend great effort to disenfranchise minorities and limit their ability to excel.

I have experienced most racism in California and Connecticut. I'm mixed with multiple races but have white skin. Been treated like garbage my whole life. I've been suspended from school for being "white" forced to fight my friend who was black or I would end up stabbed to death by a gang of people. I let my friend beat me up because I refused to fight my friend. All they cared about was seeing whitey get beat and bleed they didn't care if I fought back or not. Been denied education in college because I look white. i got top grades and was accused of cheating for being smart. and was told I needed to give up my place for nursing education for "the less fortunate who are of black origin" those were the words of the dean at job corps in los Angeles California. From my experience the darker your skin color the more rights you have. Ps my race is Asian, white, native American, Egyptian, Israeli. I've been called white girl this and white girl that. I am black and also a precinct officer in Shelby County, Tennessee. I have worked the elections for decades. In Tennessee voter ID is the driver's license. My 95-year-old grandmother has a driver's license. Any state or federal ID will do if you don't have a driver's license. And if you don't have an ID, you can fill out an affidavit and vote anyway. During early voting, you can vote at any precinct. However, on election day, you must vote at your assigned (neighborhood) precinct. If you are handicapped, we will help you. If you can't read, we will help you. If you bring someone to help, that's ok. In Tennessee, we don't care what party you are in. We don't care about your race. We don't care about your religion, sex, or your pronouns. Voters are our customers and we want to serve our customers. You have to be a resident of the State of Tennessee and the county in which you are trying to vote. If you are in the wrong precinct on election day, we will give you the address of the right precinct and paperwork so you don't have to get back in the line when you get there. In all my years, I have never turned a voter away without giving them the opportunity to vote. And I never will.

Fortunately I never faced hateful racism, but the most casual racism I’ve faced was in Boston. People look at me differently, salespeople talk to me with a very obvious annoyance and a lot of people keep their distance like I’m radioactive. What angers me is that the USA tends to consider it racism only if it is White people against some other race. Well? I have lived in New York, Canada, DC, Louisiana and Florida and I can tell you that there are good people of all races as well as some racists in every race. Just go to certain sections of Miami as a white man or go to some rich white area as a black man in an older car and in both cases you will experience racism. Racism knows no racial boundaries. I definitely experienced more racism in my home state of Indiana than I ever have in Texas. I moved to Houston at 6, and the area I grew up in was extremely mixed with every race on the planet. But in Indiana...yeah, those racists are on something different! I hated going home in the summer as a teenager because it was miserable!

I've lived in Texas most of my life but lived in Indiana for over a decade. I was blown away at the things I heard in Indiana regarding a particular hate group. Texas may be a larger state but there are definitely racist northern states.

As an Asian, I still remember those dreadful three years of my life in Idaho. Seriously racist and extreme right people (Donald Trump with legal risks? I don't believe any of us from outside the South should be patting ourselves on the back. I believe all states have more or less equal amounts of bigotry, the difference is simply that the South has a much higher higher mix of races, hence, more bigotry shows itself in crime. For example, Arkansas has almost 50% black folks, so I wonder how Northern states with only 15% minority could even manage close to that amount. And there's plenty of terrible stories of bigotry from outside the south, both old and recent. The point I'm making is, when it comes to social issues, we need lift eachother up as states and be united, not just belittle eachother and think we're better than one another.

I agree, in my state has sundown towns, and was the head of the KKK here. I think people are sugar coating the Northwest, and California because they are democrats states, and democrats states are full of the racism. I am not into politics, but if people really looked into it they will find that the most raciest places are of democrats, and the cities that are democrats in those states are the reason why people view them states raciest.

I concur. I was born in NC. I have seen real racism up close snd personal. The most shocking racism I encountered was California and in many northern states. As for voting suppression I’m inclined to be in support of ID’s. You have to have one for government assistance di everyone has one. As for Texas I did not encounter racism. But I did in NJ, Chicago and others.

I don’t understand Briggs saying NC has strict voter IDs laws. I live in NC and voter ID is not required. In 2018 a statewide referendum to require voter ID passed by an almost 60% majority. But after two years of the state legislature working out how to provide free, state, picture IDs, Gov. Cooper vetoed it. So NC still does not require voter ID.

The most racism my family has experiences was In texas. In Particular north west suburbs of Houston like cypress( predominantly white). The people there would tell others that didn’t look like them “go back to your country “ very often. Luckily I don’t live there anymore. Very bad experiences especially when I was in highschool.

That's why there's so little racism. Scratch the surface and you'll find a lot of class-based bigotry, though. That's the _actual_ root of racism. People have an innate need to group up and feel superior to others. Race-based judgement is easiest because you can see a difference most easily. When there's a history that has kept certain groups poor, it ties the bigotry together in a neat, little bow. I live in a very white city. The cops here don't bully black folks much because there aren't too many to bully (and the ones who are here are mostly middle class). The cops do love circling the many trailer parks, though. The bored, middle and upper class white people here don't complain about black folks, either. They complain about the "white trash" on the other side of town (even though most of that "trash" is just poor people, struggling to pay their bills and feed their kids). The poor people hate them right back, because they have more (regardless of whether they worked for what they have). Hate is hate. It's never going to go away. It'll just change forms as needed.

Agree, statistics are one thing, and personal experience is another. My childhood mentor was from Tennessee, and I am a minority. One of the greatest gentlemen and WW2 veterans I ever met was Mr Todd, a Tennessean from the Appalachian Mountains. I miss him still.

A friend of mine is Filipino and grew up in NC. She lived in NYC after college, but then moved back to NC to help her aging mom. When the previous guy was in office, she and her mom were told to go back home (pretty sure the person thought they were Mexican). Another friend was living in NC but had to pull her kids out of school and move away because her kids were being bullied for being atheists.

I've had the pleasure of living in many different areas of this country and I can tell you I have experienced more racism in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania than any other area I have seen. It's literally baked into the pie and the reason for minority quotas for hiring
