For Discworld, don’t worry too much about it being a big series, there are quite a few standalones and they’re so fun you might want to keep them for a treat here and there. Good video as always Mike. I just got hold of the same Bernard Cornwall series so I'm looking forward to that. I loved Feist's first book Magician and have re-read it a number of times. As a big David Gemmell fan, don't let the 11 Drenai books stand in your way. After reading Legend, read the Waylander books, and you will be hooked from there. There are also other great introductory stories like the Jon Shannow books (3), the Rigante series (4), and some stand-alone's like Knights of Dark Reknown and Morningstar. Lord knows how many times I've re-read each of his books.....sigh......so good.

Recluce Saga is split into character centric pairs(mostly), each is told as an independent mini-series. They are set at a pivotal point somewhere on the 2,000 year timeline. The various arcs can be told from either perspective i.e. the “good guys” (the Blacks-Order Wizards) or the “bad guys” (the Whites-Chaos Wizards) I enjoyed the publication order skipping up & down the timeline. The fifth book released “Death of Chaos” tells the ending of the saga. 22 books so far and I’m still engaged in the history and stories within the saga.

You know the series that I never see on Fantasy Booktube, and the series that got me into fantasy reading as a younger person is Dragonlance Chronicles. A D&D based series that may not have aged well or have flaws but I love the world of Krynn.

Believe it or not, I am just NOW starting The Witcher series. It’s been on my TBR list for quite a while. I’m about half way through The Last Wish, and I am absolutely hooked.

So glad you're reading Riftwar! It's been a long time favorite of mine. There is a trilogy about the other side in the Riftwar too. It was interesting. Hope you enjoy! And thank God baseball is back and we kept Verlander!

Still got that tiny shred of hope they retain Correa somehow.

Saga of Recluse is pretty much stand alones. Gemmel is pretty much the same. There are a few over arching stories but normally no cliffhangers.

Hope you like the Books of Babel.... Absolutely outstanding series. Bancroft 100% stuck the landing for me.

The greenbone saga is super good I'm sure you will enjoy it it's like a fantasy crime syndicate with excellent character arcs , just finished jade legacy and it's one of my favourite series up there with stormlight and wheel of time which is surprising cause it's only a trilogy

Great books on the list. Discworld and Drenai could work better as palette cleanser, like your Stephen King books, not as big series

The Books of Babel are great and is my favourite fantasy series. Bancroft's character work and prose are just amazing, I'm always in awe of how he can make me love all of his characters. Was the ending of book 4 disappointing? Yes. But it still had some amazing scenes and it made me love one of the characters I was iffy about before. Please don't write off the whole series because he didn't stick the landing, the series is still very, very good and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next. Personally wasn't a fan of Jade City. I never really cared about any of the characters so I'm curious to see what you'll think of it since our fantasy/sci-fi tastes are quite similar.

Liveship Traders really is a cut above Farseer. Captain Kennit is easily my favorite character from the 9 of her books I've read so far. I can't imagine skipping them since stuff happens in Tawny Man that makes absolutely no sense to you if you don't know what happened during Liveship Traders. There's a huge twist that absolutely requires you to know who a certain character is and if you don't then it just comes out of nowhere and doesn't mean anything to you. Remember: you have to read Book of the New Sun three times and that's not a joke. That includes Urth of the New Sun. I haven't read Book of the Long Sun or Short Sun yet but chances are those will be the same way. Discworld consists of several series and self-contained standalone novels so you don't necessarily need to commit to 40 books to read some. The first two tell a complete story, the third and fourth are both standalone and the returns to the hero(?) of the first two, and so on and so forth. Of course after you read one book by Sir Terry you will read the rest because the hunger will be upon you.

Urth of the New Sun took the weird to an almost absurd degree and I didn't like it as much, and it made it way more fantasy than sci-fi. Somehow it just wasn't very enjoyable after the main four. Still had some good moments though.
@KalleVilenius2 жыл бұрын
@@calebmauer1751 It's absolutely necessary for the loop though, for example the encounter with Apu-Punchau is just a random event with no connection to anything unless you read Urth.

IDK how I feel about getting a mention for selling Greenbone and not Liveship, considering Liveship is like....literally my favorite series of all time. But I suspect you will very much like both. I think the most common ranking of the RotE subseries is Fitz and the Fool(last)> Tawny Man(third)> Liveship (second) > Farseer(1st)> Rain Wilds(4th). I slightly suspect that will be your ranking as well, because spoilers for the end of Farseer The later Fitz trilogy's have dad shit, and are just generally ridiculously incredible

Discworld can be dipped into and basically treated as standalones. Some do have the same characters but each story stands on its own. Codex Alera AND the Greenbone Trilogy??!! Yes! Some of the books might be thick, but I'd say they're pretty easy reads. I don't see you getting bogged down in either. I will warn you that Codex Alera does have military and some ship action. But it's different from Malazan. I think this might be different for you because it is above all about the hero's journey. "Nothing good's coming when the dogs start disappearing from the streets."--Jade City--except it's very, very good. Heh

Same. I always end up listening to the Codex, Aeronaut's Windlass, and the other Dresden books every year. It's definitely an advantage with the Dresden books because I always find clues I missed before.

I am getting back to Legend of Drizzt soon but for now short series, manga, and books that I own that's collecting dust because of reasons. I have tons of fiction and non-fiction that have been sitting on my TBR and I want to read and finish them before I turn 45. Looking forward to your thoughts on some of the series mentioned in this video
