I have just visited from Europe and I'll be honest: There is a problem with homelessness, drug abuse and mental illness that is in your face, sooner or later, as you walk the streets and ride the public transportation of this city. Since I traveled solo I was aware of my surroundings at all times and never stayed out late since my hotel was on a street where homeless people hung around - no, it was not in Tenderloin. These problems are not isolated to just one area as some people will have you believe. I love Fisherman's Wharf, and it felt like a safe haven from the Union Square area. I also enjoyed Hayes St, Height Ashbury, walking by the beach to the Golden Gate Bridge and more. I won't discourage anyone to visit San Francisco, but be aware that if you stray from the touristy spots even ever so slightly, you will see people living in misery, human feces on the streets and things of that nature. To some it might not be a big deal, to me it was a bit of a downer. Not all those less fortunate people are bad though, I feel empathy for most of them. Overall I had a good time and I'm happy that I visited. Sorry about the novel😄

I am from Montreal Canada and visited every big us cities and also many european cities. The most dangerous city in Canada feels safer than the least dangerous city in the states. All american cities have this problem where you have to stay on edge. In Barcelona and Paris I also felt the need to stay on edge but not in Geneva, Munich and Madrid. Canada on the other hand is extremely safe. In the US the rich focus on isolation themselves from the homeless and the poor people instead of fixing the issue.

99% of the city is fine. Be careful walking alone at night in the TL and outskirts of. Buddy system helps and just taking a car service or pub transit to pass through the weird areas around civic center and TL will make for a pleasurable visit. It’s a shame there are sooo many excellent hotels, bars, restaurants in the dodgy parts. Zombieland (open air drug market ) at 6th near market st Friday and Saturday night is no joke. Looks like a nightmare. Just don’t go near it. Opportunists come into the city to do their crimes. Only like 8% of arrests are actually SF residents. Those areas are still fugly af to this day. Just stick the other 99% of the town and you will be just fine. You wouldn’t even know SF has some issues.

I think most things go in cycles. Currently San Fran is going through a tough time in terms of deficits, politics and crime. However, San Fran is not going anywhere. I think they will manage to make this town thrive again, solve all the issues it currently has, and housing prices will come down. I don't think the city needs a lot done to it. If they can figure out how to get affordable housing/ apartments built, clean the streets and solve the homeless and drug issues, then SF will shine! Things are looking great for San Fran in the next decade or two i'd say. I've been there once and will definitely be going again. Wonderful vibes all round!

I went back and not sure what to expect. Things I heard are improving with crackdown on public drug use and homeless encampments. I knew there would not be some miracle, and most likely is going to take more years before it fully improves. It was pleasantly great. Of course I was mostly in the tourist areas. Was afraid of leaving stuff in the car, but everything was ok. I think the City has a lot of potential to get back on its feet. I don’t think people should be scared, but they should be aware just like most major cities.

Despite the pandemic era media hoopla about SF being "unsafe", even at the worst point in 2020-2021 SF was still substantially safer than for example any major city in Florida. So yes, SF did see a brief increase in non-violent crime (and virtually no increase in violent crime) during the pandemic. But it has A. since reversed, and B. never actually got as bad as most other cities around the country that people consider "safe". SF is overall a very safe place that has a ton of very whiny people that start screeching bloody murder as soon as there's even a tiny increase in crime or homelessness.

There is a distinct difference in vibe between L.A. and San Fran and I think you're either built for one or the other. Me, personally, am energized by L.A., whereas I feel like the life is being sucked out of me in San Fran. It could be the fog and the constant dampness of the air in San Fran, bc I have S.A.D., but it's not a place I've ever enjoyed.

@@MichaelMartello It really is. May Gray and June Gloom this year in L.A. were exceptionally rough. There were weeks on end of no sun until 2 or 3 pm. If it isn't cloudy again until December, I may actually recover.

Cultural, economic & physical differences between the two major parts of CA have been noted for generations. Same thing with the differences between NYC & LA, the East Coast & West Coast. Or Europe & the US. They'll never change. Today's SF, however, is a forewarning to any city, particularly LA, how things can fall apart way too easily in spite of a city having built-in advantages of weather, culture, terrain, economics, demographics.

@@gridley Lol, dude what are you even talking about? Have you seen SF these days? Seriously! Have you actually visited it recently? It's kind of great.

@@TohaBgood2 I guess the owners of properties like the Westfield SF Centre, or around Union Sq or Fisherman's Wharf must be gaslighting everyone. It's also possible that, for example, Macy's just wants a sweetheart deal from the city, etc.

No. It's not good, I wouldn't sugar coat it. I've travelled all over the world and seriously SF takes the prize for the most disgusting: many of the streets smell of urine, vomit and weed. Broken humans everywhere, you need to have eyes in the back of your head. I had a crazed 16 year old talking to himself come at me this morning with a knife in his hand. I'm saddened, visited here 30 years ago, it was 'edgy' then but still amazing, now it is absolutely repulsive.
