The fact Scarface: The World Is Yours hasn't been mentioned once shows what a true underrated gem that is. It takes place after the movie and has Tony Montana working up from a drug dealer on the streets to a drug kingpin. You own properties, bribe the police etc and it is Scarface so it has an amazing soundtrack that rivals Vice City. I am even shocked The Godfather games weren't mentioned.

It was originally it's own title, but Activision likened it to True Crime and so it was eventually revealed to the public as True Crime: Hong Kong. It then got stuck in development hell as a buggy mess. When UFG (the developers) were ready to go bust after Activision pulled the plug, Square Enix bought the rights to the game from Activision, gave UFG a load of cash and a year to finish the game. We ended up with a brilliant gem of a game called Sleeping Dogs, but as UFG eventually went bust in 2016, we are probably never going to see a much wanted sequel. Such a shame.

“GTA clone” is an irrelevant and outdated term when it comes to AAA titles. I played some of the games on this list and none of them felt anything like GTA, especially the Saints Row series. I love GTA as much as the next guy, but why is it put on a pedestal to the point that any game similar to it usual gets looked down and called out for its similarities? To be fair Saints Row started as a mix of clone and parody of GTA it was admitted that it started as that .. But quickly became its own thing and own Franchise. Granted its yet to escape that fact of its roots despite how far its come and became its own thing

How small minded do you have to be to think anything that involves cars and even semi-open world is a GTA clone. GTA didn't invent open worlds nor did it invent getting in or out of vehicles. Simpsons Hit and Run is level based and is a completely fantastical story about alien abduction and you kill enemies by jumping on their head and even allows you to double jump but hey, you can drive AND walk in a 3D environment so it got to be a GTA clone right? RIGHT? Who cares that the gameplay is closer to Mario 64, they get IN AND OUT OF CARS! That's so GTA!

Race n Chase was initially a game that you chase criminals as it was a cops and robbers game but was changed to Grand Theft Auto when DMA discovered a glitch in the game that caused AI Cops to ram the player and used it as a feature in GTA and had you play as a crook instead of a cop but does that mean Grand Theft Auto is a Race and Chase Clone? Well not really since DMA “retitled” the game in development in the mid 1990s.

Saints row was in development before gta sa but released afterwards. They had to change the saints color from green to purple to avoid being called a clone. Trying to get rid of being labeled as "gta clones" ruined the series.

I think more games should be open-world sandbox games.
