For me I turned it off during drift races and turned it back on for highway races. I think that this game would probably one of the best racing games if only it had good physics, cause the customization is amazing, you don't see racing games with so many aftermarket licensed parts and bodykits nowadays. Also fun fact: A band called Lemon Drop Kick did most of the songs in this game and one of their band members is a rival in Aqualine named "JDM Justin". He has a channel here on YT where he uploaded some of the band's music and has talked about being in the game.

A few fun facts from experience with this game!! 😁 The final touge map (*censored* mountain) is actually the very same mountain pass the climax race (Sean's RB26 Mustang vs. DK) in Tokyo Drift is held up 👍, more especifically, the A route, overused in the game?? Yes, but it was actually a really cool nod to the movie. Also, remember, the mountain pass was incredibly thin in the movie, hence here it was hard as hell... A good advice to kill the score is to stop in one hairpin and start doing donuts (works flawlessly with a RWD car, of course), if correctly made, you will have infinite drift points, doesn't matter if the rival ends first, keep doing them all you want! IIRC, the first touge team was a indirect nod to Initial D (Most drivers' names were slightly changed out of the actual characters, but they had the same cars as the real anime) This was the very first game to feature the Lexus LFA with its very 1st concept!, also the 7-speed car was, iirc, the Lexus LF-C Concept (later the LC500), which did it's only game appearance here, the latter goes as well for the Mitsubishi Sportback concept (later the rare 4th-gen based Lancer Sportback, which gave Mitsubishi the ticket to make its final Dakar truck, the Racing Lancer) Of course, most of the Tokyo Drift cars (and Dom's Charger) appear here, but Brian O'Conner's Skyline *technically* doesn't (altough you can make an almost-perfect replica since the R34 does have the same C-West body kit), what he drives here instead is the (although slightly altered) Street Racing Syndicate R34, which has the same C-West body kit as the 2F2F Skyline but with an unpainted Carbon Fiber trunk, but the livery is same one as SRS! Some Soulcalibur (III) and Tekken (5) characters were featured here as well as drift charms and vinyls, giving you the chance to make some good itasha designs! You win some of them on the free roam encounter races, so those aren't that useless! Personally, I love this game in a nostalgia way, but also due to the wow factor!, yes, the physics are bad (especially the drift physics), but the car list was very unique since you even had obscure versions of well known JDMs and USDMs apart of some obscure cars, the maps were well made for what they were and, most importantly, the customization was the best of any 6th gen game ever made!! (only on par with NFSU2) ❤, real brands, a very well made livery editor which looks more decent compared to others from more modern games and even some unique stuff such as the drift charms and the rim's LEDs!! . Simply such an underrated gem that was drowned by its own flaws and NFS's overall popularity at the time! Doesn't help as well the developers time later made a certain motorcycle game I'm not going to mention due to respect to all of us, and get mocked all the time due to that 😅

I'm so glad you brought this game to light because it's a game from my childhood that I still think about from time to time... amongst GT4, NFSMW, etc. I remember being so ass on the drift sections that I'm pretty sure this is the game where I beat those sections by finding a section of the road it would allow me to do donuts and just went round and round to rack up points. I do agree with the physics and all. I was so young playing this game that I didn't have a real understanding of the differences between AWD, FF, FR, and I'm pretty sure this was the game that introduced me (in an obviously not realistic and exaggerated detail) to their differences in driving dynamics. I also remember MR being the worst to try and control - but then again I was pretty bad at racing games at the time. And yeah, I agree the car customization was bomb.

God I played this game *so* freaking much in the late 2000s, early 2010s, it's one of my favorites! While it's underniably a bit rough on the edges, and the physics are indeed a bit wonky, this game just has so much heart and soul to it; the atmosphere and the vibes are fantastic and it really makes you feel like a car person doing car person things. The customization in the game is second to *none*, the unholy amount of licensed aftermarket parts from companies like Fujita Engineering, Spoon, VeilSide, Top Secret, C-West, to name a few (because or else I'd be all day here) is just the best part of the game for me, because this means you can build a car in this game that you could theorically also build IRL, which makes it that extra immersive! The driving gets a lot better once you get all used to it, that said, while I also love the drifting, I do agree that [Redacted] Mountain is just freaking painful, it's way too tight thanks to the invisible walls and the freaking AI blatantly cheating if you're too far from them is pouring salt on the wound, not a fun experience. All that said, this game is 100% a must play for anyone who likes Japanese cars and the Japanese automotive culture, there's just so many nods to the old japanese drifting and street racing world, at times it feels like this game is a playable Best Motoring or Video Option video, hahaha.

Simply donut until hitting about 40k points and cruise to the finish.

@thecopyrightedracer42107 ай бұрын
I will forever defend this game because behind the difficult handling, is a REALLY good street racing game with a lot of content. Yes the handling is not the best as any other ones out there, there's a really steep learning curve but once you learn it, it becomes so satisfying to do drifts. Car choice also plays a factor because I discovered that Sedans like the 4-door Skyline or Toyota Chaser felt terrible for drifting, while things like any of the FDs & NSXs are good at long high speed drifts You can technically customize any car as long as it does not have any license plate because that seemed like the only indicator. The game's soundtrack is (so far) one of the few racing game soundtracks where I liked ALL of the songs, usually I would just pick a few from the list but just for this game I liked all of them. This is the only time a western media has tried to make a TXR rival and it's a really good attempt at it. Literally the only downside for me is that there was no Parking Lot Drifting apart from the one for the Training Sequence

So glad that you've finally gave this game a proper attention that it deserved and talk abt the car rosters The cars itself are mostly returning ones/reused assets from SRS (minus the Volkswagen) hence why there's no R32s & R33s Skylines, no SW20 MR2, no Suzuki + Daihatsu (so no funky econo Kei Cars as starters), no older gen Civic like EGs + EKs (since they could only get the licenses for the then new EP3 Civic Type R, FG2 Civic Si & FN1 Civic and not to mentioned there's no Honda in SRS) and many more This game is definitely one of my "Guilty Pleasures" that i'll gladly return to replay it once in a while sinked so much hours into the game that i practically knew the inside out of this game

if you get the hang of the drifting, for me it was at the DK drift stage, and you tune your car to your liking, the drifting becomes very easy. you dont need to full speed in every corner, but with enough hp you still could drift trough the entire corner. i loved the drifting progression as a kid back in the day. it felt like i was really learning how to drift.

This game deserves a PC port with upgraded graphics, kinda like what they did with NFS MW and Carbon Redux. I remember playing this in the PS2 and having so much trouble adapting to the physics, especially for drifting, but man did I love going around the limited Wangan.

One of the rivals in this game Ben Schaffer is real person and he even appeared in actual movie (first F&F from 2001 after the first race when Brian said "Almost had you")

This game 100% deserves a remaster. It's such a hidden gem. If polished, it can become a fantastic game. Nothing even needs to be added. Just update the graphics, improve on the physics (don't completely overhaul them or it's gonna feel like a completely different game lmao), and maybe add a few things. Maybe. Nothing in particular needs to be added since the car list is decent, there are quite a few races, the map is not super big nor super small (or at least, it didn't feel small to me idk 🤷🏻♂️), the customization is great, performance upgrade is great, livery editor I guess could be updated, but even then I find it better than Forza's and NFS since one can skew decals, if I'm not incorrect, which helps a lot. Also, the fact that one has to fo to the performance shops and the like is great! You can see cars being worked on in the back too and it feels like an actual place you've gone to for your car to get new parts and stuff. Idk. It just nails its theme. Like I said, this game needs a remaster (not a remake).

the random opponents go with the cars you currently use, it was pretty easy to get them spawning once you get that, you can't get them all in a fully upgraded car for example, you need to work your way in different cars and setups. that game was really good i still own it. but damn the drifting at the end game was ridiculously hard.

i legit had this game and it was super fun. i knew i wasn't going crazy when i could find literally NOTHING on this game when i was trying to look it up a long time ago. Glad it's getting some recognition now. this was a fun game when i was a kid Loved the car customizations too.

I've played this game a lot during my childhood with my PSP. I still remember the times I was trying to beat Brian's race many many times and I kept losing many many times because of ONE particular section. The physics screwed me up there and, as a kid, I kept pushing forward for hours until I beat him. But that was only one gripe out of the many I experienced (no thanks, the last drift events) but most of it were just fun.

One more paradoxical thing about this game is that if you wanna achieve the highest top speed possible you don't let the car straight and use nitrous as usual, you must swerve your car as much as possible and don't even need to use nitrous. Imagine you playing with a real hard boss and make this weird maneuver to win it.

I'm actually really surprised Hondas were even in the NTSC release in the first place, especially given their track record of not showing up in expressway racers back in the 2000s. It's why they never showed up in licensed form in the Shutoko Battle game, as well as the Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune series until 5DX+.

I remember struggling to complete the first race in this game cuz the car was manual by default and i had NO IDEA what was going on. The car just wouldn’t accelerate after the first seconds of driving. Back then i didn’t even have a memory card for my ps2 and i never got past that first section of the game 😂😂😂. Good times.

something I am surprise this review didn't mention was the huge amount of roads, exits and entire section of the highway being block off or unfinish. This did not really occur to me until I started playing the game again and when I saw how many exits where blocked off it feels like the game lost more content than it would have.
@mrxbas3 ай бұрын
I did notice this as well, but considering how “complete” the roster of opponents is, I don’t think they were cut mid-development; I guess they already had so much on their plate by having both highway and mountain races in the same game that they had to prioritize, and I think this was an easy option even though it could’ve definitely made the map even better.

I believe the Lexus LFA Concept had seven gears, but honestly, i could be wrong. You can just grab the one you obtained from Sunshine Run just to check though. Though my experience in this game is "I love the Wangan Racing, but yeah avoid the Drift like a Plague", though thanks for the tips of actually taking AWD and FWD for it. That could be very helpful. While i admittedly cheesed out Wangan with the very OP Corvette that goes like 250 Mph after i used a highly upgraded Corolla Levin as a starter car until i beat Sunshine Run
@mrxbas10 ай бұрын
As a kid, I’d always buy a Corvette ZO6 to finish the Wangan side. The LFA also (somehow) has only six gears, but it’s the fastest car in the game, reaching over 270 MPH (and it can go higher, but I’m sure that the game has hard-capped it).

looking at the gameplay trailer for the Genki developed F&F game, im guessing they took that and turned it into Racing Battle C1GP, a Japan only racing game that's just TXR but on closed tracks and the highways are turned into closed track as well
