Tripler Army Hospital is a massive medical facility on a hill in Honolulu, Hawaii. It stands out greatly because its painted bright pink. The reason why is because when it was first built, the person that ordered the paint messed one number in the paint's NSN (national stock number). However, once the order arrived and they realized the mistake, they decided to keep it because A) It made Tripler stick out as a unique landmark, and B) It would have been a huge hassle to return that much paint.

Remember before banks had ATMs and a human being handled your deposits? One time I went through my bank's drive through to deposit my pay check. I didn't check the receipt immediately, but later noticed the teller had deposited my account number instead of the actual amount of the check. Being that the account number was a fairly long string of numbers, I was a multi-millionaire for a very brief time until the bank discovered and corrected their mistake. Damn!

A newspaper in Green Bay, Wisconsin meant to type the large bold headline: "Thompson's pen is a sword" for its lead story on how Governor Tommy Thompson had vetoed so many bills. Unfortunately, or hilariously, they didn't leave space between "pen" and "is," so readers started their day by picking up the morning paper off the porch and learning details about their governor's phallus.

My favorite expensive typo was the case of Mariner 1. This rocket was launched on July 22, 1962, and was supposed to do a flyby of Venus. Unfortunately, a few minutes after liftoff, it went off course and had to be destroyed. The problem turned out to be a missing "overbar" - basically a hyphen placed over a letter - in the computer code for the guidance system, causing the rocket to veer off course. It cost NASA $80 million (about $760 million in today's dollars).

When I was a kid in the 1970s, in Perth Western Australia, the government run telecommunication company Telecom stuffed up a whole bunch of phone bills by moving the decimal point one spot to the right so a bill for $30 became $300. My parents received one of these bills and my dad almost had a heart attack. It wasn't clear how only certain bills got stuffed up, but they ended up having to not pay the bill at all. After that dad was paranoid about the phone bill and the government was left with egg on its face. I remember dad pulling out all of the bills from previous quarters and years which were all about the same, then you had this one. Some legal fun and games before it was sorted. This was in the days of trunk and operater connected calls where you would book an interstate call at time X , no direct dialling like we have now. There developed a joke that they would take the number off the bus travelling past their window, multiply it by the temperature in Celsius, the subtract the date to get your bill value!

This is why I stay away from numbers. Don't give me numbers lol. I'll find you a typo in any book you hand me but don't ask me to remember numbers. The other week I brought my dog somewhere and wanted to leave him inside so the door code was like 7652 and I was getting SO frustrated I couldn't get in and I was late so I called someone to give me the code and I was like "WTF that is what I was doing!!" Turns out nope. Lol. I was putting in like 7562 and did not notice. I swear I was born dyslexic and because my parents started me reading early (like we read the hobbit when I was 5), I got over it before it mattered, but they aren't strong with numbers either so I didn't get that same experience and now I can't read numbers straight. Nothing is more frustrating than failing a maths test only to see you got all the points for showing your work but you failed because all the answers were wrong and you can see all the giant red circles around where you flipped the numbers lol. Don't trust me with numbers!

A different but related event: In 2003, a translator with the U.K.'s GCHQ leaked a top secret memo that was published in the Observer revealing that the U.S. government planned to apply pressure on members of the U.N. Security Counsel to pass a war resolution justifying the invasion of Iraq. U.S. journalists discredited the memo as being fake on the grounds that it contained British spellings of words that are spelled differently in the U.S., but it turned out that the wording of the original memo had actually been altered by a spell-checker prior to publication.
