Something similar is said in México by elder people but more in zones close to the mountains, at night if you hear screams/weeping run as fast as you can to your home because there is death or danger around, if it sounds like it comes from close by, it means is far away but if it sounds that it comes from afar, then it is really close to you or already is on you/targeting you. Pretty sure that hearing that at night is chilling.

I have to sleep with ear plugs in as i keep hearing strange noises in my flat at night. I told my mother I get the feeling there was a little old lady that died here and it doesn’t bother me at all but I was speaking with my landlord yesterday and he confirmed an old lady did pass away here. I love it tbh as I live alone and it a bit of comfort knowing she’s here with me. I don’t understand why people are afraid of ghosts, they are just humans that you can’t see. 🤷‍♂️ she hasn’t tried to frighten me at all but she sometimes moves the catch on the front door strangely. I’ll place it loosely on the door so it’s easy for her to remove it just so I know she’s still here. I wish I knew her name though.
