I bought my wife a PRX for Christmas, and while it’s beautiful, it leaves me wanting a bit more. Since the Twelve isn’t currently in budget, I’ve been strongly considering the Maen. Gorgeous watch at a price that’s hard to ignore.

If you live near one of the Wind-Up Watch Fair cities, I highly recommend checking it out next summer. Smaller brands like Maen, Underd0g, Vaer, etc can't compete with the high end brands when they're contrasted with extreme close-ups in videos like this, but seeing them in person is a whole other experience.

An underrated watch? ...Once upon a time in the early 1990s I wanted to buy the coolest chronograph I could find to commemorate a success. I didn't have the knowledge that I have now, but in the end it came down to two watches, both with the same movement, the Zenith 'el primero' movement. One of the watches, a Rolex chronograph, retailed at around £3,000 and the other was over £4,000. To me the Rolex looked boring and the quality seemed so-so, while the other watch was sculpted and by comparison was actually beautiful and the finishing was exquisit. What watch that I bought, that uses the now famous Zenith el primero chronograph movement, do you imagine was worth an additional third of the price of a Rolex Daytona, above the price of the Rolex in the early 1990s, in essence I'm asking what watch was a fair level above the now legendary Rolex daytona, that also uses the now legendary el primero movement? Here's the kicker, what's the price of one of those gold/streel Rolex el primero Daytonas today and what's the price today of a similar early 1990's Ebel 1911 Chronograph with the same movement? Time has not withered my 1911 ebel Chronograph that was once my daily wear watch and that, IMO in direct comparison with a Rolex Daytona then and now still kicks it's arse in the looks and quality department. There's an underrated watch for you, all because the original owners sold the company to some numptys that took a once well reputed brand and apparently trashed its reputation. I wouldn't buy a new Ebel today, but a vintage Ebel chronograph remains something very special indeed...

SEIKO made a rookie mistake by naming their upscale brand "Grand SEIKO". They should had followed the steps of LEXUS, INFINITY and ACCURA and give it a brand new name, free of all the baggage of the past. Because people now associate these superior watches with all the problems they have had with their old SEIKOs.

@Nextman91611 ай бұрын
The biggest issue of the sbgw is the logo and typeface scaling on the dial. It honestly has fine proportions, it’s not a calatrava by any means, but the hands/markers, case all work together fine. The GS logo and script along with the placement is absolutely terrible.
@attila224611 ай бұрын
It’s fine to me. The biggest problem with grand seiko are their boring and too thick case designs. They’ve basically got 100 variants or special edition of the same watch.

I thought Rolex was the most basic and boring brand but GS has taken that spot. Yes I said it. How many snow snow flake and tree bark dials can you look at before getting bored.
@SolomonLFH11 ай бұрын
Worst of the bunch: Remove your voice over and one quickly sees the Grand Seiko for what it is - an overpriced bore of a basic watch. Plenty of watches that do as little, for a tenth of the price, and as well, if not better. Winner of the bunch: The Chopard L.U.C. Most entertaining of the bunch: The Armin Strom. Why? Because even Patek owners need a hero to look up to. The Armin Strom reminds us that horology is not about the next best watch, but it is about the watches that grab us as individual preference permits, irrespective of elitist brand snobery, because I'd rather wear my first Casio that reminds me of my first love of watches, then feel inadequate because someone decides to wear all their Pateks on one wrist. Thank you Armin Strom for reminding me that my passion and interest is peaked by the emotion that is stirred and not defined by the name on a dial.
