Well, it gets even better when you find out that Fernanda Torres' mother (Fernanda Motenegro) was nominated for an Oscar in 1999 as best actress with a foreign film (Central Station). That year, she lost to Gwyneth Paltrow for Shakespeare in Love. Many people (including Glenn Close herself) said that Fernanda was blatantly robbed. I hope her daughter gets nominated and avenges her mother. They are both very beloved here in Brazil and very talented. The fact is: Brazil, when compared to other countries in the race for the Oscar, is far behind other countries, especially the USA. We saw this in Emilia Perez, where the casting director was recorded saying that THEY COULDN'T FIND ANY TALENTED MEXICAN ACTRESSES to make the film, and that's why Americans made the film. From that, we can already see that in the coming years, we will see several films made by Americans and starring Americans gaining space in "foreign" films. All they have to do is put a director from another country in the mix and that's it. I think this is unfair.

I'm Still Here is a powerful story about Eunice Paiva after his husband was kidnaped and killed by the brazilian dictatorship, in the early 1970s. Yes, is not usually a big contestant for an Oscar win, considering it is a non-english language movie a very specific period of the brazilian history. Nevertheless, I showed all her range as an female actor, considering how she can navigate from comedy to intense drama and suffering through all her career. I watched some of the main candidates this year and, in my humble opinion, she gave the best performance. If the movie was in english, there would be any doubt about her being nominated and a front runner to win, but that's not the case and we know the Academy has a few priorities, but I still hope she gets nominated for this wonderful role.

I am also rooting for Fernanda Torres as a fellow Brazilian. But i got to be honest, Fernanda winning or not, will never matter to the meaning and importance of the movie. This movie was not made for foreigns. This was made for US. This was a gift for us and a piece of our past to make us think about future. This is not made for people from US, Europe, Asia or even other latin countries. This was made for Brazilians, and if we win the oscars, that will be great, seeing the academy recognizing our story, but if we dont, whatever

Even at 40s they have problems to get good projects, they loose "value". i think karla sofia gascon spot as a nominee was the most affected by fernanda’s win. we haven’t seen two foreign actresses in non english speaking movies being nominated to the best actress academy awards since the 1970s. demi is now a clear frontrunner and i feel MJB depends on the BAFTA results to be nominated. the other spots depend highly on the sag nominations

I think that is the case as well. I will say maybe that makes sense for Grande because she’ll have a very meaty role in part 2, but for Erivo, her characters biggest moment is by far Defying Gravity.

It's totally reasonable that Fernanda's win would be considered "shocking", since a) the audience from the United States is not used to watching foreign movies; b) ceremonies held in the US usually awards English speaking actors and actresses (mostly from the US)

@BenFriedman916 I think it would be the Apprentice too. Stan said on Gold Derby that people have been messaging him privately about his performance. Based on how his fellow actors have treated him in the roundtables, I don't think that's untrue. So people might be willing to make that nomination in the privacy of their own home. Unless Frances Fisher does a grassroots campaign to get everyone to switch to A Different Man.

Like I totally get what you mean and perhaps awards season and shows are about these kinds of big moments and like you say great speeches but personally for me it's more about the actual award and performance in the film that should get you the award.

I'm shocked to hear that there are people thinking Ariana could win or even be nominated to acting awards. She's a singer, isn't she? I mean, she has done acting jobs, sure. But her skills are far from being taken seriously. And I never thought she took acting seriously. Wait. Are you mocking Ariana by any chance? I'm confused. Because if on one hand she's clearly not an actress (this part is especially heavy on singing, btw, and she is a... singer!), on the other I don't think she's that bad to the point of being mocked. I know and love her since her comedies shows in early 90's. She not only great in drama, but comedy too. And she had already won best actress in Cannes (in Cannes!) in the 80's! Look, there's nothing wrong if you wanna cheer for Ariana because you love her songs, identify with them, etc. But to take her seriously as an actress when amazing actresses like Fernanda and others are serious contenders is nothing but shocking. If the Globes has a "best singer in a movie" category I would definitely understand that nomination. However... winning? I mean, we have a lot of good singers in Emilia Perez, so... Tough competition this year if such award existed.

I don't think Karla's spot is locked, cause I don't think she's winning any award on this season and, in addition to that, all the attention for Emilia Perez, when it comes to acting categories, seems to be going to Zoe for her supporting role (and I even see people claiming that she is the lead on this movie). Also, if Jolie misses SAG, I think she's out of the race. I might be wrong though.

I think Karla Sofia Gascon is a lock for a nom especially when you consider the competition: Locks for sure (excluding Gascon in my mind): 1. Madison Then I have the category of probable: 2. Demi Moore Leaving us with 3 slots. I think Karla Sofia Gascon is a lock when you consider the completion of Jolie (which will be the film’s probable sole nominee), Babygirl (sole nominee), Torres (she’s gaining momentum), Erivo, and Kate Winslet for Lee. I think the 5 will be Madison, Moore, Karla for sure and I think Erivo gets in as well, so the question for me is can Torres bump Jolie?

Fernanda Torres Oscar nom would be hard won if she got it. She didn't get Critics Choice, she's most likely not going to get SAG, and she didnt make the long list at BAFTA. It will be interesting to see what BAFTA noms are like since there is a cross-over with the voting bodies. BAFTA has elevated people to Oscar wins like Tilda Swinton and Mark Rylance.

Yesterday, New York Times said “I’m still here” should win the best movie. Not a non English movie. The best movie 2025. And BBC, NYT, Washington Post, Reuters said that the only good surprise (even so many reporters were saying that Fernanda would win Golden Globe) was her victory yesterday.
