I had this in the 70s, and I have the current version. Excellent review, you said everything I was thinking. The current version is no disappointment. It may be very slightly less complex and long lasting, but the essence of it is still all there.

@@joe12524 I bought an EDT sampler this year, batch 7U02, so I can't date the juice inside for certain, but I can say it's still a classic. Not in the least challenging, it will just make you feel fresh as a daisy, by its sparkle. I am into Tom Ford and all the rest, but this is one you don't have to learn to love. I'd always say sample first, but yes, I'd recommend.

I had that other vintage edt bottle in the 80's. But i must say that the modern edt reformulation is one of the best modern reformulations in general. I like the topnotes better than the vintage and the dry down is exactly the same, but a little more present than before. It still doesn't project as a slap in someone's face but people will pleasantly notice you for sure. Thanks to this channel i have a renewed interest in fragrances again.

First, I want to congratulate you on 11K !!! I've been watching since my early days of KZbin and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything... As for the fragrance, I simply fell in love with this one, the very first time I smelled it (it was the modern version though)... I could truly feel the manly side of it, the aromatic, spicy and citrus aspects and that sort of barber shopy/vintage smell.. as you said, truly the epitomy of a timeless scent !

Thanks for this review. You've become my favourite fragrance reviewer on KZbin. The likes of Jeremy Fragrance and many others seem completely oblivious to the fact there are some beautiful timeless classics like Eau Sauvage, Acqua di Parma Colonia and Pour Monsieur by Chanel. Fragrances have been around for thousands of years - not just the past 15 years. There is something magical about the vintage version of Eau Sauvage. It has a mysterious quality - a certain je ne sais quoi that is almost impossible to describe. It's no wonder that well-informed connoisseurs like Roja Dova, Sali Hughes and Lee Kynaston rave about it.

Thanks for posting Dan! Very interesting topic for me because my newer version of Dior Eau Savage perhaps is #1 in my collection. Performance is pretty good. I personally don’t find it “dated”, I just find it distinctive. If the vintage version is even better I am intrigued.

Great review, Dan! ES is one of my all time favs, I own bottles from all decades from the 80s on and even a 1 L bottle and a giant 3 L factice, that‘s how much I love ES! The current version, since 2015, gets closer to the original, and I get really decent performance from it. Regarding the differences, the only one I realize is that all versions older than 3 years smell off. That‘s typical for citrus based frags, the top notes go off quite fast. That means that the differences between the „vintage“ and the current version is not due to the missing oak moss or whatever ingredient, but due to the died top notes. To me, the hunt for a vintage is absolutely not worth it, and often even a waste of money, when one realizes that the NIB vintage has gone off. Best regards from Germany, Daniel.

Thank you for this. I've loved this scent since the 70s when I was a child. I had a bottle in the 90s and again in the early 2000s. Recently I decided to get a new bottle for this coming summer but everytime I sprayed in the shops before buying it I found something missing and thought my olfactory memory was at fault. I'd given up and got bought Declaration EdT instead but I still pine for Eau Sauvage. What a relief to know it's the new formula who has been letting me down. I will look for the brown box from now on. 🙂👍

Great review. I was in High school when this 1st came out (1966).I guess I'm vintage too! lol.I use this in summer & the newer Sauvage EDT & Elixir for winter. Dior has always been a trend setter that others (YSL,Chanel,etc follow). Cheers from Vancouver.

How many hours does it last on daily basic this old version? I have an oportunity to buy a vintage version and I don't know if there are noticable differences on lasting power. I have the new formulation and it last only 4 hours. I really love this perfume, but unfortunately I can't enjoy it how many hours i would like. Do you think that Cassamorati Fiero it's a good alternative that last longer? Thank you!

i used a lot of Eau Sauvage in the past (yes, the vintage one) Nowadays i use the modern version. Nor really that much of a diiference in my opinion... Eau Sauvage together with Creed Aventus are my alltime number one parfumes...

Unless you can get a vintage EDT for a good deal, I would probably just go direct to Eau Sauvage Parfam 2017, its a great mix of the best of the EDT and the 2012 Parfam.

I love citrus scents, and was really interested in trying this. When I finally did, I did get citrus. But I also got so much dank skin-like muskiness that I was reminded of a 110-year old man. I'm pretty sure it was the new version that I smelled, but that musk is just repulsive to me.
