I’m from Ukraine and when the war started in February I left my home with 10 items of clothing. I was good to go for 3 months until I returned home 👌 I was also pregnant at the time, and it turned out you can totally go without special maternity clothes as long as you have oversized pieces in your wardrobe 😊

Kilgore Trout.

I'm French and my best allies against low temperatures and cold weather are thermals and warm knitwear and socks. The best of all: handmade knitwear! My mum knitted some beautiful woolen sweaters and cardigans for me in the 90s, they were perfect even for skiing and snowstorms in the Alps... and sadly I no longer have my mum, but still have a few of her precious creations, still in amazing condition. I wear them at home during the coldest months which helps us so much in lowering the heating bill and using less resources.

I notice that I'm more prone to buying clothes more than anything else in my home. I don't have an extreme amount but definitely not a minimalist amount either. I just went through my closet the other day and decluttered some things because I went shopping for clothes for my new job. I realized I have enough to clothe me for about 2 weeks not including special event kind of clothes (I have 3 dresses I wear to clubs, weddings etc). But the other big thing I've realized is a very large portion of my life has been wanting for clothes that I like and fit well on me. I just didn't have the money, and my abusive ex denied me the option. For now I consider having the amount of clothes I do to be a radical act of self care and self love. I enjoy my clothes and use all of them. Maybe some day I will feel differently and want to get things down to a more minimalistic point. For now I'm happy decluttering other parts of my home. It's funny how much your channel helps me and in a lot of ways helps me reflect on the source of the reasons for behaviors and thought patterns. I appreciate you so much and I appreciate you putting your story out there into the world. 💚

I'm glad you're taking care of yourself and loving what you've got. I don't think you have an excessive amount of clothes. From what I see with my friends, family, and coworkers, two weeks worth of clothes is less than what most people have. I used to have more but I pared my wardrobe down to about the same amount as you by rotating through them equally. I hang almost everything, so I wear items from one end of the rod (or section of the rod) and put clean ones at the other end. If I skip over the first one twice in a row, I know I have to make a decision about that item. Maybe I just need to store it in a different spot because it's out of season or special occasion clothing. Maybe I don't like it as much anymore and I can donate it. Maybe I need to mend it. Basically, it keeps me in tune with what I have and my changing tastes over time and gives me a functional wardrobe that I love.

Last winter (November - February) I did a 100 day dress challenge wearing a black Merino wool dress from Wool&. You're right - no one notices. 🤣 This month, I'm doing a different challenge called "Dressember" where I'll wear a dress every day (with leggings underneath since it's cold in PA!) to raise awareness and funds to end human trafficking & help survivors ❤ I only own 8 dresses at the moment, so I'll be rotating through them for the whole month. 2 of the dresses are merino wool, which doesn't need to be laundered as often and doesn't get stinky as often. Totally worth the price to me.

I have one thing per day times 2 so everyday I use fresh clothing and I do one laundry per week and a cycle 2 sets. That ends up being 14 socks and underwear, 14 shirts, around half is long sleeve. Now pants is different, you can get away with using the same ones for longer depending on the use. I have 4 and I use 3 per week and one while y wash the rest and cycle those in a month. Then 2 hoddies, 2 sweaters and 1 jacket. This is a system that just works and I don't waste time thinking and things are clean. Just thing of cycling sets and you will find the sweet spot between functionality, cleanliness and minimalism.

A number of years ago, there were quite a few people doing the 6-item wardrobe challenge and it was quite the eye-opener... I once did the 7-item wardrobe challenge for 6 weeks around March in central Europe and it worked great for me and for all occasions (I had to attend both a birthday and a funeral) without it being an "all black" wardrobe, I should do that again as a palette cleanser. I did not include outerwear or tights and shoes, I have to say (long and short-sleeved tops, jeans, cardigan, tunic). I really need colour in my life, even if it's muted... yours is a great wardrobe, Marissa!!

I really enjoyed this relatable approach to a capsule wardrobe. I have a toddler, two cats and work from home and it is not realistic to own only white and black shirts. I started having a capsule wardrobe when I was pregnant and then after labour, because I only had 10 things that would fit my body. It’s so much easier to get ready.

Spraying the armpits and crotches of your clothes with a bio-enzymatic pet stain/odor remover before washing them completely eliminates any lingering odor. Ten is too few for me because of the need for frequent washing and lack of variety. I have 30-35 highly curated items total, including coats, pyjamas, and all seasons in a region that fluctuates between -20F to 95F. I feel like I have a lot of clothes and don't feel like I wear the same thing all the time at all. I love the spaciousness and order in my closet and simplicity of getting dressed.

You can also use cheap vodka in the same way. Old theater trick- the alcohol kills odor and evaporates. Try a test spot on delicate fabrics, but we used it to refresh costumes that were not able to be washed - like 17th century gowns, dublets, etc. If you have a box fan, you can set it up to blow on your drying rack and it will decrease your drying time and prevent mustiness.

I love your realism when it comes to your wardrobe. Thank you for representing the "normies" out here who dress in odds and ends (no offense meant in that expression!) and might not always be at the peak of fashion (also no offense meant in that phrase!). It's very refreshing. I would love to pare down my wardrobe this way, but the reality is that I do need more clothes for about three different parts of my life (work, church, and home, though some of these overlap). I have tried to pare down as much as possible to make the getting-ready process as stress-free as possible, but I also like to keep pieces that I still love and that are still in good condition, and not necessarily declutter just to reach a certain number of items, which means that I have a larger wardrobe than what would typically be called "minimalist." Thanks for mentioning the fact that not everybody's lifestyle can accommodate such a wardrobe, but it was a fun video to watch!

Great video! I went extreme minimalist with my wardrobe last year and I really enjoyed it but my main pieces of clothing were 3 dresses that I rotated, they are all 100% linen and I wore them out (as in made holes and rubbed the fabric thin and transparent) very quickly. I did mend them by using the Sashiko method which made it really fun, but I was disappointed how the dresses didn’t last long and Im way to frugal to let them go and buy new ones. 100% linen dresses are expensive in option.

i'm actually trying this out right now! with only 5pieces of apparels lol (2 dresses, 2tees & 1yoga pants), excluding 2sets of pyjamas & underwear. i think this really too extreme for me, even though it is feasible in real life, but definitely not by choice though. my house is under renovation so I am putting up at someone's house for two weeks, so i just wanted to pack as light as possible. 10items is possible as long as we do our laundry frequently, but i think this will wear out the clothing super fast (they will fray, thin out, colour fade etc) even if we use delicate wash settings and laundry nets.. so i wouldnt do it even though i can technically live with a 10pcs minimalist wardrobe as where i live is summer all year round. i think the ideal is 20-30pcs, or 30-40pcs for people who stay in 4seasons places

This is my life lol! For some reason, too many clothes gives me anxiety (or should I say, really contributes to my anxiety). At one point I had 4 bottoms and 4 tops. I had one denim leggings, one black denim, and 2 Lula Roe leggings. One top for each pair of bottoms. Then my anxiety kicked in and I got rid of one outfit (down to 3 tops and 3 bottoms). I could have gone down to 2 of each (seriously considered it! lol!). I've loosened up a bit and now have 4 bottoms and 6 tops (all interchangeable) AND! next week I'm going back to Kohl's to work part time (so I needed some clothes for work lol!) I'm perfectly happy wearing the same outfit 2 and even 3 times.

On a daily basis I wear 2 T-shirts, a sleeveless one underneath a long sleeved one, jeans and a jumper. That’s 5 a day, then add a coat when I go out! 6! I have 3 pairs of jeans, 3 warm leggings 3 jumpers and 10 T-shirts. That’s for 80% of my time. I have enough to wait for a full load of washing, my husband has similar in his work clothes, we wash them separately as his get very dirty! Then I have my going out clothes, mostly dresses, I enjoy dancing and getting dressed up is part of it.(it’s the only time I wear makeup) I used to have glittery night pieces, but now I wear dresses that I can wear on sunny days. I think being intentional is key, more so than a number. I’d freeze going around my house in a short sleeve t shirt in winter. 😀

One other point is that your clothes will wear out faster. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. If I were to do this, then I would 1. have 2 pairs of jeans(I cycle through 2 pairs of jeans each week w/out washing them anyways) 2. Have 2 long sleeves 3. Have 2 pairs of shoes(boots and tennis) 4. Have 2 sweaters and 5. Have 2 light jackets(because i don't have a coat) I should try this over the winter break. I think that'll be really neat.

wow, this is an interesting challenge. I appreciate your insights, practical approach, and inclusion of "exceptions" like lifestyle or activities specific to the person (cold climate, parent/crawling around on the floor with kids or pets, hobbies, etc). I would like to ask about that dress you show with the 4 pictures that the 'algorithm' thought was too repetitive. lol. I've been looking for something similar to add to my wardrobe (long-ish, knit, with elbow-length sleeves, mid neckline, possibly a-line/flared (not body-con) and a dark neutral color with the subtle pattern) as think it could replace 3 or 4 other dresses that aren't quite cutting it for me on their own.

“Allowed to own”….the practicality of this choice is certainly challenging but it ALL really comes down to choice. The trend of minimalist is a question of WHY, before the lifestyle is lived. I love choices which for me is my form of lifestyle, not a lot, but certainly not this extreme.

I feel like I have a very pared down wardrobe at I work full time in a uniform. That's 5 out of the 7 days so the other two comes from the rest of my closet. I could pare that down a bit more as there are things I know I don't wear but think maybe someday I will.

I have a very small wardrobe. I wear fresh clothes everyday, so sometimes when I’m not in top of my washing game - I’m missing underwear, so I have to rely on my bikini bottoms for the day 😂. So maybe calculate if you have enough clothes for a week or so, without doing laundry.

I couldn't get by with 2 shirts, though I actually have a simple model for at home dressing. I have 4 pairs of pants by the same manufacturer. Two are jeans, two are chinos. I have 10 cotton shirts in various colors. I have a polar fleece jacket and a wool jacket. Grab pants, a shirt and a jacket. Done. Almost everything coordinates. The shirts are the limiting factor. I need to do laundry about every 2 weeks, as if I don't spill, the shirts are usually ok for 2 days.

Ah I always wonder about laundry. If I only had 2 t-shirts and 2 long-sleeved tops, I'd have to run the machine every 2-3 days? And we have a 10-litre machine so even if we put all the clothes from our family of 3 in it so frequently, it wouldn't be full... and then I'd end up washing half-full loads which is also not very energy-efficient 🤔
@AtoZenLife

We still launder less - around once a week and I wash mine less than the boys. I only launder when clothes are visibly dirty or don’t pass the “smell test” to conserve money and energy. 👍

I usually do this for trips but realistically the amount of things I wear need to be based on the frequency of doing laundry as well as purpose, I need things casual activity and more polished so 10 items just is not practical but 30 could work.

I've been considering doing an extreme minimalist wardrobe challenge as well, but I'll definitely have to make wiggle room for outwear/layering pieces. I get real cold in winter and don't have an official "winter jacket" so often I'll be wearing 8+ pieces on a given day just to stay warm (>v

Love you channel!! Especially when you talk about clothing or kids toys. What are your thoughts on “investing” in wool/cashmere? My “uniform” is minimal, typically 2 pairs of jeans, 2 cotton long sleeves, and 2 wool sweaters. I’ve been thinking about splurging on a wool jogger set or wool base layers for pjs and lounging. Wondering if these things are worth the price in your opinion?
@meisjeViv
@meisjeViv Жыл бұрын
I recommend lambswool or merino wool for sure! I found out that a chain store near me has really attractive sales in spring of their thin merino sweaters. Have also been lucky at thrift stores and markets sometimes. An extra layer of wool makes an outfit so much warmer! I use it when camping as well. But yeah, if you do not have a lot of money, keep your eyes open. From your name I assume you are a woman - I am as well and I've found that the deals are often better in then men's section. Extra pro there: long enough sleeves! And I found finding women's style wool thin layers that are not either fussy (with weird ruffles or patterns or puffed sleeves or prints etc) or expensive really hard...
