Decluttering my closet all at once is too stressful and visually overwhelming. So for the month of November, once a day I shut my eyes and randomly pull out a hanger. Then I take my time with that item - feel the texture, enjoy (or not!) the color; maybe try it on. Give myself time to think about it and make a decision. Takes only a minute or two. It's slow but enjoyable and stress-free.

The jeans can be easily altered - suggest a small dart on each side slightly over fr. the middle . Jeans are expensive & a few minutes of sewing ( by you or a seamstress ) is worth it !

Many years ago, I realized that, as I was approaching the end of my working career and the work environment had become much more casual, it was time to get rid of a lot of clothes. 10 full garbage bags later, I have one pair of black pants for just in case, no skirts, and a few dresses that I only wear in summer. I mostly now live in tops, jeans, flip-flops, and sneakers.

I think it's like any decluttering - I could not really imagine how different and what a happy place it is to have only clothes I enjoy wearing. I look forward now each time I can wash the things I've worn and get them back in the drawers and closet ready to put on again. It's crazy but true! Having enough rather than too much is a truly Happy Place and feels so nourishing! Oh, my favorite movie is also Coco - so beautiful visually and my daughters all resonate with the relationship between the generations.

I appreciate that as you are decluttering and finding items that belong to other family members (example, your son's Taekwondo uniform) you set the item aside to offer that person the choice, involving them in the decision/downsizing process. So many "minimalist" KZbinrs give the impression that they just make the decision on behalf of the other household members (and maybe that's what works in their family. To each their own.). But I appreciate and respect your approach of asking and including the family member(s) who the item(s) belong(ed) to. It helps them learn how to let go, hopefully with purpose and respect (not fostering a "disposable lifestyle" mindset).

such good tips! I"m going thru my clothes and culling anything I didn't wear last Spring/Summer. Even two dresses with the tags still on. I just don't wear dresses, that's my fantasy self. 99% of my days I'm home doing housework, cooking and running my kids around. I will do skirts, but not dresses. Also, maybe an unpopular opinion but I still prefer the wood hangers. I prefer the natural material of wood and actually like that they are thicker, they force my clothes to be spaced a little more so I literally can't cram too much onto the rail. I worry the velvet ones would leave a hanging crease on my garments too because the edge of the velvet hangers are so thin and sharp.

I started this process, when I switched to my winter wardrobe. I only put things in the closet that I KNOW I like to wear, plus one jacket that I haven't worn that much. If the jacket doesn't get worn this winter season, it will be donated. It's interesting to me that my winter wardrobe is almost all gray, black, and red.

I always loved Ghostbusters and Beetlejuice. Love the theme of this video too of being haunted by past things including things you just decluttered. It is absolutely true about the declutter bag! That was a hilarious addition! I quit teaching this school year to heal my body from all the stress of pandemic teaching and Halloween and Day of the Dead were two of my favorite holidays to share with students and do art projects with. I have a lot of fantasy self art project clothes and costume ideas too that I need to let go of, and I have a ton of old teacher clothes that don't fit or are just completely worn out from art teacher life. I keep thinking I'll go back to teaching but I realize the more I'm away from it the happier I feel, and it is definitely time to let go of some of those past me outfits. The tips to get rid of clothes from my past self are really helpful and make it a lot less stresfful of a process. I also realize too, my body took on so much stress weight and I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Hypothyroid, which can cause a lot of weight gain and so many of my clothes are really tight. I keep thinking I'll fit back into clothes, but realize I need to spend a little bit of money now to buy clothes that fit and that I feel good wearing, even if these clothes are for wearing during this transition phase for my body. No one expects an expecting mother to squeeze into tight pants while her body is changing, so why should I have ill fitting clothes while my body is bigger due to all the health changes it went through? I think that is part of this journery too, sometimes getting rid of things also means being okay with bringing new wardrobe items in, that fit the body we are in right now, and when I lose some of this weight I can then declutter the sizes I need now for ones that fit better again. I think there is a lot of guilt when there are ill fitting clothes due to changes in the body, and holding on to things that don't fit in hopes they will again one day is very haunting because clothes can be so sentimental. I'll be 40 in two weeks and it's my goal to slide into 2023 and a new decade of my life a healthier me and this was the perfect boost I needed to continue to fuel the changes. Thanks for all you do!

I can't stop laughing at your head poking out of the garbage bag! lol Creepy and hilarious. OK... you have possibly given the best piece of advice that I don't think I've heard before (I've certainly never applied it): "Start by pulling out a few favorite pieces". I think my biggest roadblock to seriously paring down my clothes is that following the common advice to pull it all out of the closet and go through everything, getting rid of anything you don't love, I'm pretty sure I'll feel like I don't really love ANYthing, and in the end I'll have nothing to wear. Starting by picking out my favorites starts off on a much more positive note. I can certainly identify a few favorites - they're most likely going to be the items I always tend to wear anyway. They may not be perfect, and I may decide I want to replace or refine those items, but there's no way I'll end up with nothing to wear starting out this way. Doing this today!

It's interesting to watch your videos and kind of compare your minimalist approach to mine. My journey started when we lived in Berlin and moved to US with then two small girls, now teenagers and high schoolers... I don't throw or donate away clothes or shoes which I bought anymore. Have not done that in many years. I think carefully what I buy but still some of the shoes and clothes stay to the closet fr long time without using after I bought them. Sometimes for years. What I'm doing I take a look for all of my wardrobe at least once a year and every year I take some old item/ items to use with specially focusing to it/them and they always become my favorites and use them all the way to breaking point. It usually happens that because I take new item to use I also start to use different part of my closet more because they kind of go together. So I only toss things away when they are broken. I also stopped buying from Goodwill few years ago as I realized I tend to buy clothes which are good brand and so cheap for that and so nice if just... but also always lacking something and for that reason I'm not using it. I have not bought any clothes to my self in couple of years but very happy t it what I have.

Marissa, this probably isn’t something you want to spend any time on but what I do with Levi’s is have two identical pairs but one smaller size and one larger size. If I know I LOVE the fit and shape I prefer to have a larger size for when I want more room and a smaller size for when I really want a snug fit-- plus I usually have Levi’s for 10+ years so my weight does fluctuate and it’s nice to grab “my favorite pair” even thought it’s two favorite pairs.

I've been thinking of watching some more spooky black and white movies...totally my kind of Halloween vibe, sound pops and all 😉 Love that you mentioned identifying favorites first -- I actually happened to do this with my many scarves today and it helped me to at least scooch a few lesser favorites into my Time Will Tell bin :) Also! I never really considered ordering by color until trying it out recently and it's great. I've tried by category (too visually random), by length (better, but still not quite right), and now I think I've finally identified my favorite system! Between that and skinny velvet hangers (I even match light hangers with light items and dark hangers with dark), it really does add to the physical and visual space and I've been loving it!

I love Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline. I don’t see any harm in trying out the alteration of your new jeans. If it doesn’t work you can take the stitches out, continue wearing a belt, or take them to a tailor if you prefer a more permanent fix. I found a local preschool that collects clothes and textiles, even gross old pillows, that they sell to a reseller/recycler. They get paid per pound. I think a lot of the bins that are dotted around US cities are similar - a charity may get some money and what’s good will be resold, what’s not will be recycled (and hopefully nothing shipped to the global south but sadly that’s something I can’t control.) Decluttering has helped me learn to buy less.

Peter Jackson's The Frighteners is our "Halloween" movie. So good if you like fun thriller/horror! For the jeans that are too big in the waist, I would recommend doing the reduction on both sides of the back loop or they can look a bit odd and off-kilter. I have done this and love it, because I'm smaller waisted than my backside.

I've had velvet hangers for a while, but I was getting annoyed with how my clothes wouldnt come off the hanger when wanting to put them on, felt like I was stretching clothes more. I think the good thing with the sewing hack (for your jeans) is that it's not 100% permanent. If it doesn't work, you could remove the thread and you're back to business as usual with your belt.

Hocus Pocus, even more so now that I’m a mom. My toddler calls it “hoco poko” and it made me fall in love with it all over again. 😂 I’m definitely in need of a serious closet declutter. I’d say I only love 25% of my wardrobe, if it fit correctly. I have fluctuated weight all my life. So most of my wardrobe is my fall back or what I purchased to fit at a lower weight. I’m trying to make permanent changes and loose the weight for good. I’m giving myself one more year to make a change. And if I don’t then I will let go of anything that doesn’t fit.

I don’t have a favorite halloween movie since I didn’t grow up with halloween. We’ve imported a light version of halloween between my childhood and when I had my children. In the fall I love to watch Good Witch 🧙🏻♀️ but more for all the fall vibes 🍂 yes! You should totally try that sewing trick on your jeans!

Would you mind providing information on the grey balloon sleeved sweater that you own ? I ask because I have been trying to find a flattering comfortable sweater to downsize all the others that are not either of those things! Part of my decluttering process is always to have something that I really love so that I don't feel enticed by other items why on a search for the "perfect" one. Love your channel 💕
