I know, the focus of this video was on position changes in professional football. But man, the most important change of all time happened at youth level when was Manuel Neuer went from striker to goalkeeper. Still, obviously, a fantastic video.

For 2002-2003 season Scholes played as 2nd striker behind van nistelrooij to accommodate veron and he did seamlessly
@rafaelvalera4609Ай бұрын
That was more of a return, he already had been a striker as a youth player.
@SonnyK248Ай бұрын
He played as an attacking midfielder for the majority of his career. It was only after he got old and was far less mobile that he started sitting in front of the back 4 and by that point he was only averaging like 20 games a season.
@rafaelvalera4609Ай бұрын
@@SonnyK248 wrong, he started playing the deeper role at 31/32, and he was still an everyday player by that stage. And he technically played as an attacking midfielder, true, but it was also a box to box role.
@SonnyK248Ай бұрын
@@rafaelvalera4609 Nah Paul Scholes picked up an injury in the 05-06 season that kept him out for a big chunk of it and kind of made his body wave a white flag and from the next season onward he started playing the sitting role. So he'd have been about 33. In the classic United team with the class of 92 Paul Scholes' job was to score goals. Keane ran the midfield, Becks was the creator, Scholes got forward and scored goals and Giggs was kind of an x factor player. You can see in his output that from about 2007 onward the goals dried up and he started playing far far less games than he used to. This was because his body had failed him so he started playing the sitting role that didn't require a lot of mobility. And by playing less and doing a lot less moving on the pitch he was able to extend his career for another half a decade. But strangely this is the version of him people talk about when they talk about prime Scholes.

How on earth Franz Beckenbauer didn’t make the list? He was the definition of position change from midfield to a completely invented a new role as a sweeper at the back line Diego Armando Maradona from a forward to a playmaker midfielder Bergkamp from striker CF to playmaker Rjikaard from defender to midfielder Hierro from DM to sweeper/CB Van Nistelrooy from defender to CF L. Blanc from playmaker to sweeper defender
@rafaelvalera4609Ай бұрын
- The sweeper already existed; Beckenbauer was just the best at it. - The 10 in argentinian football was always an interchangeable role between free striker and playmaker midfielder, there was no switch for Maradona. - Bergkamp had already played playmaker for most of his time at Ajax, and Ajax players have been for a long time widely known for being able to play multiple positions. - Rijkaard and Hierro played on an age in which a lot of players alternated between CB and DM during their careers. I could mention 5-7 similar players of the top of my head. - Van Nistelrooy's switch occured in youth level, IIRC. The only one who legitimately switched of the ones you mentioned here is Blanc, who did play professionally for Montpellier as a playmaker before being moved back.

Messi could get another register in this video after Suárez joined Barça. Initially Suárez was playing from the right but didn't quite have the pace to deliver from out wide. Messi volunteered to return to the right-wing, sacrificing the false-9 role he'd had for about 4 years, and that selflessness from Messi enabled Suárez to deliver, and Barça won their 2nd treble. Zanetti after most of his career at right-back, played next to Cambiasso in holding midfield as Inter became the first Italian side to win the treble. Mascherano moved from holding midfield to centre-back.

@wolfpackpete640822 күн бұрын
@BLACKSTA361 I disagree... Messi moving back out to the right-wing is what allowed MSN to become the legendary forward 3 they are. They wouldn't have won a treble, and Suárez might not have himself a success at Barça at all. Never mind cement his name in the conversation of best no.9s ever. But yes, I agree that individually what Messi did as a false-9 is an even bigger deal

I don't know if this positional switch, would have changed football, but I found it really interesting on how Klopp switched Adam Lallana's position from forward to midfielder to be very beneficial for him. I think the story goes something like (and I appreciate I may not have the details correct)... the manager thought Lallana didn't have the speed or physical strength to play as a forward, so positioned him in midfield where he wasn't marked by big burly and quick center backs. This allowed him more space and time to execute his classy and elegant moves, use his intelligence to contribute to the play and score crucial goals as a midfielder entering the penalty box away from defenders. I find that story quite inspiring, that managers can see that intelligent players sometimes need a bit of space to thrive.
@siberianTiger639Ай бұрын
A good video, very good examples👍 I would maybe add Mertens, swhitcing from a natural LW to one of the deadliest 9s in top leagues for a few years in Napoli. You could maybe add Khedira here too, who was mentioned in the vid... He was an attacking midfielder at the start of his pro career at Stuttgart, wasn't very special there, but when he moved back to a box to box positon he became one of the best in the world. Maybe Mandzukic too, who was a winger at the start in Dinamo Zagreb, but was transformed into a proper CF under Magath at Wolfsburg.

Declan Rice from Centre back to CDM. When Rice made his debut, Moyes played him as a defender. It's only when Pellegrini came Rice established himself as a good defensive midfielder. Sergio Ramos from right back to centre back. Yes Sergio Ramos did join Madrid as a young promising defender but he had to play right back since Canavarro was the best centre back in the world and to be fair on Ramos, he was one of the best fullbacks in the world. Mourinho arrived and converted him to one of the best defenders out there and captained Madrid to a 3 peat of Champions League titles. Itumeleng Khune from striker to goal keeper. Despite the fact he played for Kaizer Chiefs(the team I absolutely hate since I support Orlando Pirates), Khune at youth level was a decent striker but when he moved to goal keeper he became one of the best keepers we had in South Africa and one of the best in Africa. Not only he was an excellent shot stopper, he was good on the ball and can distribute like Ederson right now. He was South Africa's best keeper at the time and even saved a David Villa penalty. Javier Mascherano from CDM to Centre back. Mascherano was a top CDM for Liverpool and West Ham amid the controversial transfer to West Ham from Corinthians. Joined Barcelona but he was never going to replace Busquets so the next best thing for him is to play centre back and he thrived there and played there since. Trent Alexander Arnold from central midfield to right back. Trent started off as a midfielder from the academy at Liverpool but because Clyne was ravaged by injuries Trent made the right back position his own and became one of the best right backs in the world. Aaron Wan-Bissaka from winger to right back. Wan-Bissaka started off as a promising winger but Hodgson saw he was excellent in tackling so he converted him to a right back and was on his way to become one of the best in his position when he joined Manchester United. Unfortunately Ole couldn't develop his attacking side of his game and stagnated until he joined West Ham.

Butting Messi and CR7 on this list is a bit stupid. This list makes it sound like these player were performing below their potential before the switch like Thierry Henry did, but putting Messi and Ronaldo in that company is completely misleading. Messi was excellent as a winger. Barcelona's most successful campaigns came from when he was playing as a winger, not a false 9. E.G Both treble seasons. As for CR7, his best seasons individually also came from when he was playing as a winger, he only became a striker when he lost his pace and became all about end-product. But to think he became better than when he was on the wing is crazy.

i’m sorry but you’re absolutely wrong about ronaldo… can we STOP this “ronaldo striker” nonsense 😂 he was NEVER a striker at madrid and especially not an out and out striker. ronaldo as a striker completely isolates him and takes him out of the game and stops him doing what he wants to do. ronaldo only ever moved around near the striker position during games which doesn’t make him a striker. if people bothered to watch him play at juve, he was a winger STILL taking people on down the wing and dribbling, it was only until he moved back to united when ole forced him as a striker, that’s when ronaldo first became a striker 👍🏼
