I made the mistake of skipping my laundry day right before Helene hit and we had no power for 12 days. So I got to try out my bucket and clotheslines method. Wasn’t too bad but I really wished I had done my laundry that week! On a side note, about 8 days into the outage we discovered that while our 4k propane generator will not run our washer, our ecoflow will! So that made the last round of laundry a little easier. Lessons learned!

11. If you don't already do so, take a few walks around your neighborhood at different times of the day. See what's currently normal. Be friendly to anyone you see. Take note of your environment so you recognize changes. 12. Water. Did he mention check water supplies? If he did, ignore me. But I have a number of water totes I drain/ refill every once in a while. If you do, maybe make sure to do it if you haven't done it in a while. 13. Pets. Don't forget to include pet food in your preps. 14. Live your life. While "hope for the best but prepare the worst" is what drives us to prepare, don't assume anything will happen. Go to work. Walk your dog. Go get Chinese takeout. If something happens, you will not know when. Don't barricade up for a few days because something MIGHT happen. Just do your best to be conscious of your surroundings and make informed decisions. None of this is worth it if you're living in fear of something that may or may not happen. My 2 cents.

We've had a power outage recently that lasted close to 13 hours. The backup battery charging banks for cell phones came in handy. But eventually they gave out too. Noted to self, needed more of them. The solar lights usually used outside lit up the necessary rooms and hallways. Candles helped, but could always use more. Gas stove wasn't missing a beat, just needed a match to light the pilots for cooking. A percolator coffee pot is essential and was a real comfort during various storms and power outages.

So question for whoever knows…. If you and your family members all had starlink be it however far apart y’all are you can text/email each other even if whole grid went down? (Remain in communication?)
@Ravespillo3 ай бұрын
@@shosho9455 yes, starlink runs on a satellite network. So for starlink to stop functioning those satellites have to be out of communication with each other either by being damaged or destroyed. When you hook up starlink I’ve been told you can still text through various android apps, and through iMessage on apple products. So yes, if everyone you wanted to talk to had starlink you’d always be in communication. It’s probably the most robust network that exists.

I live in a blue state, right by the state line with a red state. I do everything in the red state. Work, shop and have a storage unit set up. If you drive by it, it looks like regular household stuff, but it's not. Behind the facade of 'regular stuff' it's completely set up to basecamp out of it if needed. It's full of water, Mountain House, clothes, camp stoves, Mr. Buddy heaters, a Jetboil and plenty of fuel, camp toilets with several cases of plastic bags, and other survival/camping gear. I have the backroads mapped out so I can get over there and back without getting on the freeway or even a main road. Anyone else would call me nuts but you guys understand that I don't trust the blue state. I'm afraid if martial law was declared, they would try to close the state line. I am prepared to stay home, or not be able to get home. I would rather live out of my car in the red state than be stuck in the blue state. I can shower at work or a truck stop near my work, and sleep in my vehicle, which I restored/rebuilt over the summer so it should be good for many more years. There is nothing dumb about prepping and don't feel that you are over reacting or being paranoid.

@@robertgoodrich8953 I am working on it. I only pay $475 a month for rent, utilities, water, garbage, and wi-fi. My landlord has done a ton of work on my car, saving me thousands. I have escaped the rent crisis the past 4 years and would have been an idiot to try to move. But, this spring, that is what's happening.

A year ago we started a neighborhood text list to help each other out in the event of emergency, fire, break in or lost pets. We are building neighbor comradery. We also know where elderly, vulnerable are so we can help if needed.

Love your videos, M.P. Great advice as usual. Remember to stock up on pet food.

Was in NC when Helene hit. The entire grid went down. Definitely fill up your gas tanks. Have emergency food. Protein bars, peanuts and peanut butter will suffice. Self protection was not needed but it is good to have that extra layer. Have plenty of bottled water. I learned some people are cooperative and friendly. Some are aloof. And, some are bad actors.

I don't think you said this - but I live in a very rural area with power outages very common. I keep an eye out for storms then I clorox the guest tub and store a tub of water in it. That is flushing, hygiene, pets - everything but drinking. So far in the last several years I haven't had to use it - but once or twice had to use almost all of it. Also fill all my extra large cooking vessels and keep them on the stove "just in case". The 2 things that I'm facing for the immediate upcoming "event" is low on ammo - and will fix that tomorrow - and I have surgery date right after the election which will put me in a moderately large urban area - nothing I can do about this -- scheduled and needs to be done. Any ideas to help me out. BTW I'm a 77 y/o widow and an Army vet.

In other words, do the things. Prepping is a lifestyle, you don't have to get ready if you stay ready. "Normies" will be the problem if there's any disruptive shenanigans afoot.
