The backlash was most likely from people who don't know much about fighting. Expecting some amazing UFC main event fight, when Bautista did just what he needed to get the job done. The fancy stuff is overrated

Taka Michinoku also had a single fight in Pancrase in the late 90s against Pancrase/DEEP veteran Keiichiro Yamamiya. He lost but looked decent until getting caught in a keylock.

People have a lot of armchair opinions about wrestlers who give MMA a go and don't end up winning championships. But I always say remember this. Someone who's stepped in a cage (or ring) for an MMA fight and got knocked out after two seconds is still a thousand times tougher than any "toughguy" with no proof except for bar brawls and a mean look. If you say you're a hardass then okay maybe you are maybe you aren't but if you've dared to actually have a go then you've proved it.

I've seen people walk out of training camps pissed off (both martial arts and pro wrestling) and it's usually the ones who haven't got the emotional depth to adjust to finding out they guessed wrong about their ability. I say that, and I've failed plenty of physical tests myself, but I always kept on going and kept going back and that's the main thing.

I don't agree. The pro wrestlers who succeeded in MMA - Sakuraba, Tamura, Suzuki, Funaki, Severn, Shamrock, Lesnar etc - had strong catch wrestling backgrounds. Most modern WWE wrestlers - and modern american wrestlers in general - don't have any kind of shoot background. It's not enough in MMA to just be tough anymore, you have to know fundamentals.

To be fair Nathan Jones mostly left strongman due to injuries. That shown clip of him arm wrestling is an infamous incedent that had them remove the event from strongman because high strength and not knowing shit about arm wrestling correctly leads to arms snapping like toothpicks even if you aren't against a national champion arm wrestler like Nathan was.
