In 2000 and 2002, I traveled to Kyoto and Tokyo areas respectively from Taiwan. To the best of my recollections, the hotels I stayed were all marked as 4- stars-hotels and charged me about 70 USD per night. I also rented a bicycle and rode to Todaiji Tample in Nara. After finishing visiting the temple, I went back to the place where I put my bicycle only to find the map I put in the basket in front of the bicycle was torn apart with the edge of every part being jagged. Suddenly an idea occurred to me. It was the deer that ate the map.

- No need to buy small travel size tissue. There are people handing out free tissue packs in front of train stations and along side of main streets. - Supermarkets do sell fresh made food much like the conbini. You can buy them at a discount after 8-ish.

I don‘t know if Japan got way cheaper in the last 2 year, but when I look up hostel prices on hostelworld, I can get reaally good deal for $16 a night all over Japan. Additionally I wanted to add, that Simcard prices at the airport can‘t be compared to normal prices :)

I watched another video about how expensive traveling to Japan is and the girl said she spend about 500€ on FOOD! I thought maybe Convenience store food would be less expensive and after watching this video I am glad, that that was true. Thanks

Yes, definitely the case with c-store food. And as a bonus, it's decent food :)

Good video! I found the tips useful even if I have been to Japan before :D. I would just recommend to lower the sound of the music as it's a little distracting! :)

Thanks for the feedback. I find it hard to make the audio sound good on all speakers (laptop, TV, headphones) but I'll keep working on perfecting it

I am shocked you don’t have more subscribers, your content is great… One piece of advice, I don’t think you need the music throughout, it’s distracting and I’m interested in your tips without the music… But great job, now I know I must go to Japan

Thanks Eliana! Definitely recommend Japan. I agree with you about the music. I used to edit my videos with headphones on... big mistake since my audio levels ended up wonky. Anyway, thanks for your comment!

Totally agree with your common sense! That is how we always travel. We prefer to save so we can travel more, we don’t want to go fancy and only to go once :)

1) If at all possible, buy your food at a grocery store. The pre-made stuff. It's even better if you get the timing right and it's on sale. I only use a convenience store if I'm desperate (eg, the grocery store has really bad hours). Even a cheap noodle or rice dish shop can have pretty comparable prices- for fresh food. The convini is selling convenience- you pay extra for convenience. It's not where you go to save money. 2) This is NOT where you should cut corners. Japan has cheap food available if you want to eat out. If you go home still hungry because you ate something delicious but small, then that's when you drop off at the grocery store to buy a meal or a katsu or tempura or something. If you're staying at a place that allows you to cook, then reheat the pre-made food properly rather than in a microwave. If you get an opportunity to get a real home cooked meal, then obviously take it. But in the case of a $5-6 rice bowl or buying it $4-6 from a grocery store and sprucing it up a little... or cooking something with $3 of raw ingredients... come on. You're saving like $2 a day when you could be eating Japanese food. 4) If at all possible, don't even buy regular drinks anywhere besides family restaurants where you can get refills. Drinks are absurdly expensive, tend to be quite small- and there are probably 30 vending machines between the station and wherever you're eating. Even a rip-off vending machine (eg, one near a station) is likely to be double the drink for half the price. Some places pretty much force you to buy though, but I think I usually get out of that by being foreign. 8) Rail passes shouldn't be thought of as "per day" anymore than something like a Disneyland annual pass should be calculated per day. Disneyland for less than $2 a day! Nah, you add up the main individual prices of what you're actually using it for and calculate against the price. Regional passes are actually much harder to make worth it than the national one since you really have to abuse them to the limit to beat paying as you go, whereas the national one pretty much pays for itself just going Kantou to Kansai and back, if you don't want to night bus or take domestic flights. I think the Setouchi pass made the most sense before, but it's been a couple years now since I could check. (that's because due to a fluke, the west Japan shinkansen actually goes all the way to Fukuoka despite them not otherwise having jurisdiction in that region). I'm not sure what pass you actually got, but when I calculated before the Kansai pass was actually one of the harder ones to make worth it if you actually run the numbers. Again, you can, you just need to go pretty far almost every day. Regional passes are hard to use, but city day (or multiday) passes rather than paying as you go tends to be better in terms of budgeting, but you need to know where you're going as there's usually issued by a particular company rather than the city itself. There's money to be saved there but for most people it may not be worth the bother. 9) Disagree completely on this one too. Knowing where you are and where you're going is just too important. Just being able to follow yourself on a map program as you walk to whatever you planned on seeing without having to stop somewhere with wi-fi to reorient yourself is worth the 50-100 USD. The hostel/etc internets are often crap too so it's nice to have something nice. You should order in advance and have it sent to you rather than buy at the airport though. I invest in the actual mobile wi-fi and that's what I pay. Just getting a SIM card should be a lot less. The airport almost always abuses you with stuff like this.
